Google wants to dump China?

The internet has been abuzz about Google threatening to end its operations in China as it fears their company websites have come under official attacks regarding security. Google in its blog discussing issues with China have claimed that they will now have a new way of dealing with China. Google.cn is the Chinese domain for Google. It has a huge subscriber base and as China is growing rapidly their internet usage has also grown manifold.

The Chinese government has had strict policy regarding internet censorship. It has a elaborate system which does clamp down on dissidents in various ways. Most companies look the other way and accept demands of the Chinese Government regarding sharing information and regulating content. Most companies like Microsoft and Yahoo have been criticized for their bowing to Chinese pressure for doing business in China. Many websites we consider harmless are often banned or blocked in China.

When Google entered China and created Google.cn it had initially accepted Chinese rules and a lot of experts claimed that Google had lost its innocence. All companies who do business in China do allow for greater censorship to their content by the government with usually the argument being you play by the rules that are present in the country.

Google – China mismatch

Google and China have always been a mismatch. Google essentially has done more than any internet company to free up information and make it very accessible. With complying to censorship in China, Google has probably compromised on its own culture. Google is one of the few companies who have first concentrated on functionality for users and then figured out ways around this functionality to make money. Small businesses and large businesses finally got the opportunity to contact individual users not with annoying email advertisements but through search. This system to work needs a big amount of openness and freeness to operate.

According to Google, China has managed to track and compromise security to an extent of certain individuals who were known dissidents or human rights activists. These cyber attacks were not just limited to Chinese citizens but also people in Europe and the US. Google has now started sharing information with various agencies on these attacks and will be discussing with China on a deal to go ahead and carry out their operations in China without any censorship. Google’s blog even goes to the extent that if it doesn’t work out they will have to shut their China operations which effectively close down Google.cn.

Another take on this controversy is if the Chinese state is unfairly targeting Google operations which benefit Baidu which is essentially controlled by Chinese government.

What do you think? Is it fair of Google to stand their ground and deal with China on their own terms or should Google accept the law of the land and work within that framework?

I personally think Google has a point here, as the internet is mainly a democratic and level playing forum for sharing information. Trying to control this forum will greatly harm its potential and hence internet should not be subject to censorship.

Look up entire Wikipedia on Google Maps

I hardly have met anyone who uses the internet but does not use Wikipedia. Even school kids are now a days wiki something they learn at school. There is one thing we do get in Wikipedia and that is a huge number of locations. From names of countries to small villages are all used while writing article on Wikipedia. There is website which has started a great experiment and that is mix Wikipedia article with Google Maps. The end result is you can literally look up the entire Wikipedia on Google Maps.

Wikipedia_google_maps

As you can see in the image above I decided to wiki Adsense. Wikipedia article shows up to the left of the page with relevant locations being shown to the right side which is actually a Google Map. I clicked on the tag it shows text from the wiki article itself. The text shown with Google maps is also highlighted in the Wikipedia article.

This is an excellent way to mix two services which are often used for research by people. One of my favorite searches on The Full Wiki is searching for famous personalities like Columbus, Alexander or Napoleon who obviously traveled a lot and all of it is usually available on Wikipedia articles. It is quite a great way to pass time reading up these articles with the aid of Google Maps showing exactly where incidents happened.

Below is a video demo of The Full Wiki

Know of any better ways to use this service? Do drop in your comments. 😉

Not a lot of people really found Google Wave as important and path breaking as they expected it to be but it is still early days. I will more on that some other day. For now for people using Google Wave I want to share with you a couple of ways to get notifications on while using Chrome or Firefox browser.

Google Wave Logo

Google Wave notification

Firefox:

  1. First just download the Add On for Google Wave from the Mozilla website.
  2. Once the add-on is installed, you need to click on Tools >> Add Ons and then select the options for Google Wave Notifier Add On.
  3. Now enter your Gmail username and password. You can change the refresh time for the Add On to check for new updates.
  4. The updates are displayed at the right hand bottom corner of the browser. It as a small number which shows the number of unread waves. If you hover over it for a few seconds it will show a show a tiny pop up of the subject line of the wave.

Google Chrome:

  1. Install Chrome Extension for Google Wave notification from the extensions library. (Chrome browser needs to be a beta version)
  2. Now once the extension is installed it works automatically and gives notification to the number of waves unread as long as your were signed into Google account.
  3. The notification part is like the Firefox Add-on neatly packed away and visible next to the address bar on Chrome.
  4. The updates are displayed as numbers. If you single click on the extension symbol for wave, it pulls up a list of new unread waves. Click on one of them takes your directly to the new wave.

Firefox 3.6 Release Candidate is out

Firefox two days ago announced that it is coming out with a release candidate (RC) version of Firefox 3.6. Previously you might have read up on Firefox 3.6 beta version update. Now with this Release candidate version Mozilla will probably start the transition towards version 3.7 and the much awaited and hyped Firefox ver 4.

Firefox 3.6 has had over 5 beta versions and using it I am very satisfied with its compatibility with add-ons while most of them have been updated now.

firefox

Firefox 3.6 Release Candidate

  • Now you can change the appearance of the browser with a single click using Personas.
  • It has improved support for new CSS and HTML5 technology.
  • It will support third party applications integrating with Firefox to improve stability.
  • It will alert the users about out of date plugins.
  • Improved automatic form fill with better options.
  • Better JavaScript performance along with improved start up time for the browser. I personally did not find much difference after installing the Release Candidate version with the time it took to start up.
  • You can manually update it from their website but if you have 3.6 beta version it should update automatically.

I am not a software testing expert but since the upgrade I feel the Mozilla Labs features which I had installed with my Firefox seem to be working a lot better and in a streamlined way. I think this will be quite crucial considering the applications and features in Labs which are present now will be the mainstay of Firefox’s version 4. Even though it is rumored that version 4 will be out towards the end of the year, its integration of applications lying in Mozilla labs will be crucial. I think it will get a lot better with Firefox 3.7 and we might be soon using some features like Weave in a more friendlier and reliable way.

Do let me know what do you think about the new release candidate? Download it from here.

Find interesting facts on any number [Fun]

I am going off topic as far as being techie is concerned but for maths lovers this website can be quite entertaining and interesting. This website is actually a created by a mathematician and a lot of research has gone into it where if you enter any number between 0 to 9999 you get properties of that number along with certain facts which are very unique to the number.

number_gossip

Number Gossip allows you to give some interesting details which includes even jokes used with that particular number. For instance when I entered the number 666 considering we call our website Devils Workshop. :-p
The results were quite a lot of fun. I got its various properties along with even a joke about the number 666 .

Here is another example of the results for the number 4523 and one of its rare properties comes up as Google. It’s defined as Google because of a unsual hiring ad regarding numbers Google would put up. 😉

number_gossip1

Unfortunately this website only supports numbers upto 9999 and not any more. But just the voluminous amount of information available on ten thousand numbers is quite worth it.

Go ahead and pass some of your time if you love numbers on Number Gossip. Even if you are good at Math, you will certainly learn a few new things!

After images and videos now share files on Twitter

I am sure you are aware of the many Twitter applications and services which allow you to share links, photos and even videos. We have already reviewed how you can organize and share Twitter links or even the other way round about how you can share tweet links from You Tube to Twitter.

But what about files? Sharing files through Twitter can be quite handy as I might want to exchange certain text files with my followers rather than have it on a website and then share the link.

share_files_twitter1

About File Social

  • Sign in with your Twitter account and type in your message along with attaching the file by uploading it.
  • The file size limit is 50 MB which I think is so for server efficiency. It seems quite useful for sharing freebies with your tweet followers.
  • There is a File Social desktop app and also a phone app which you can check out at their website. The phone app is available on Android.
  • After sharing the file with my Twitter followers, they can simply click on the link and download the file.

I think this not really a great service for bloggers or internet marketeers who are looking to increase their traffic but I think it would be a awesome way to release some freebies that your company or website might offer. 😉

Let me know what you think about it through your comments.

Man escapes from prison and updates his Facebook page

man_escapes_prison_facebook

This one is sort of interesting and also a little funny. There is a man who has escaped from prison and has started updating his Facebook profile. His name is Craig Lynch and over a month now he has been taunting the police putting up details on his Facebook account about various activities he carries out all day.

At the time of writing this post his Facebook page has over 1800 fans and many people actually supporting him for the fact that he is dodging the police. He escaped from a prison in England and has been updating his profile with information like where he ate last time. He was serving time for burglary. The police is contacting Facebook for clues on catching the man, but they are probably taking his updates on whereabouts with a pinch of salt considering he could easily be misleading them.

What do you think about such phenomenons which seem to become more and more prevalent as social networks grow to really considerable size. I mean should people be also joining in and supporting this person considering this is not a film character who you might root for but  is actually a convicted burglar. Let me know what you think about it through your comments.
