Check if your content is repetitive with online tool

Getting excited about something new is very good but sometimes that excitement translates into enthusiasm and at other times it leads to recklessness. This is especially very true for a blogger, as sometimes when I get excited about something new to share I get lost in the excitement and end up writing a post. After a few days I realize I could have added a few more points, maybe covered more things.Sometimes I am unhappy that because of my excitement I have written some words in a repetitive way.

The repetitive words are fillers and often can take away from the quality of your post. I came across an website which counts the repetitive words I might have used. Did you notice how many times I have used ‘repetitive’ in this post until now? 🙂

About Word Counter

  • So you can see that I repeated the word ‘repetitive’ 4 times. Ideally I should have not repeated this word more than 2 or a maximum of 3 times.
  • What I did was copy-paste the top part of this post into this website called Word Counter. It checked the repeated words and gave me a list.
  • The website allows you to omit words like ‘if’, ‘to’ which obviously will be repeated often

Hope you find this website useful, I certainly will be using it for a quick check on every post I write on DW. 😉 Improvement is a continuous process anyways. Let me know what you think about this online tool and if you think it will help you write better articles, posts or even reports.

After countdown Google says Happy New Year

Google had initially introduced a countdown in seconds to the New Year. Now it has included an animated way to wish people a Happy New Year. You might have previously read up on the new-year countdown on Google search page.

Just visit the Google homepage and next to the search bar click on “Im Feeling Lucky”. Make sure nothing is typed into the search bar. Immediately you will see an animated fireworks display and lots of Happy New Year messages poping up in different colors (see image above).

At the time of writing this post, the animation still works. But in case you missed it you can see it on the video I posted below.

Well its already the 3rd of January so I don’t expect it to be working for more than the next couple of days. So go ahead and try it out. 😉

Sharing and cross-sharing of information across platforms is the new trend and very useful if you want to cover various forums to disseminate information. For a blogger it is vital to distribute links to their posts across various platforms. Here is where I found Flexamail quite handy. It is a service which allows you to send and retrive information to Twitter and Facebook without even the need to visit any webpage. All you need is to log into your email account.

How does it work?

  • When I sent a email to particular email address of Flexamail I could send a tweet and update my Facebook wall.

  • It also has other options to check 10 recent wall updates, 20 tweets from friends and also helpful in sharing images. 🙂

Here is a short video demo I made while I tested Flexamail

10 things that impacted technology this decade

We have come to the last couple of days of the first decade of the 21st century. So I thought I would write about the top ten tech moments or products in the last 10 years. This is mainly a personal opinion on products, services that have impacted the tech market in a positive way.

#1. The iPod: This one is something that actually saved Apple from drowning. It was released in the year 2001 and immediately caught the imagination of almost everyone who wanted to listen to music. Apple was a company at the edge of bankruptcy making losses. The iPod and its craze changed everything. The fall out was fantastic for Apple as ironically a lot of people looked at buying Macs because of its popularity and reputation gained thanks to the iPod. If Apple is at the helm of smart phone technology with their iPhone its because of the legacy started with iPod early in the decade.

#2. Google AdWords: Google search engine was a winning product but how to monetize it? In the year 2000 Google launched Adwords. This revolutionized making money online. The idea of getting people to pay for search listings was not a new one but Google did what no one did and that was it let the market decide what it wanted to pay for every click on a AdWord. An exstension of AdWords was AdSense which allowed the Blogging industry to become money earners. Even Devils Workshop is today running because AdSense and hence it is impossible to not include it as a positive impact for this decade in the tech world. It is estimated Google makes over $5 billion from AdSense revenues.

#3. WordPress: This is what a huge majority of bloggers in the world use for designing their blogs. You might be suprised but a lot of websites which are not necessarily blogs are also designed with WordPress. An open source blog publishing application, WordPress started gaining momentum from development and design ideas coming from ground up. It was first released in 2003 and since then it has set the internet on fire with over 200 million websites using WordPress.

#4. Wikipedia: I did grow up in the pre-wikipedia age where if you had to look up information on the Bengal Tiger or India’s population you had to refer to either the Worldbook encyclopedia or Britanica Encyclopedia. Now you just search for at Wikipedia. With over 14 million articles in various languages it has become a must for anyone searching for information on almost anything. The online encyclopedia is written by people like you and me on subjects that we know about.

#5. Social Networking: I doubt anyone reading this is not listed on some social networking website or the other. It all started with connecting with old school friends and led to being a phenomenon where not we use social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace to do a host of things which includes searching for jobs, clients, technology and lately gaming. There is no denying that the last 10 years the internet has shifted focus to social networks a lot more than ever before.

#6. You Tube: Ten years ago if we had to catch a music video or look up a news clip you had to wait for it to reappear on the television tube. Today we look them up on You Tube. It was created in 2005 and became hugely popular and soon after Google bought it. You Tube is massive for the internet and it has not been completely monetized. It has been used for commercial campaigns to political messages and it has led to the under 30 population being called the YouTube generation.

#7. Unlimited Email storage: Back in 2000 we had Hotmail give us 2 MB inbox storage space. Most of us were overjoyed when Indiatimes had offered 10 MB space with its email service. Gmail entered the market with the promise that you do not have to manage your storage space. This had a domino effect and any serious player in the Email service will not dream of offering you anything but unlimited storage. Instead of 10 MB total storage space within years we have moved to 10 MB limit for attachments.

#8. Blackberry: Research in Motion (RIM) released BlackBerry smartphone and we had the birth of the smart phone. It basically replaced the need for a computer to check emails and surf the net. You can do that with your phone. With the ever increasing closing of the gap between a netbook and a smart phone we should soon see smartphones making netbooks obsolete. All this will be probably with a huge thanks to the rise of the BlackBerry in this decade.

#9.Google Maps: Finding a place or getting driving directions has become revolutionized with Google Maps. It was not that there were no previous endevours in mapping the world but Google Maps allowed you to list your business on their maps which transformed Google Maps into a ever evolving interface which is not extensively used. With Google Earth it gets us satellite pictures on our computers which was surely not something people thought possible 10 years ago.

#10. Rise of Open Source: The rise of Open Source technology has really captured the imagination and come out of the dark alleys where products and applications were used only by developers and people in the know. The dominance of Microsoft has still to be shaken in the OS market but when it comes to applications open source technologies are surely taking over. It also has now got people understanding the concept that Open Source does not mean free software but freedom from control of software development.

I guess a common thread between almost all the products and services being successful has been making technology more widespread and users getting to interact with other users. Most successful companies instead of becoming technology developers are making the transition to becoming technology market places for developers and users to interface. Hope you agree with my list and if I have missed out on anything do let me know through your comments.

I conclude the post by wishing you all a happy and safe New Year from all of us at rtBlogs.

Test drive Windows 7 on browser before buying it

If you buy a car often we are allowed to take a test drive. I wonder why no such option exists for software applications and more importantly Operating Systems. But here is a website from Microsoft which allows you to test drive Windows 7 through your browser thanks to their virtual labs. It allows me to use many features in Windows 7 remotely on a live virtual machine.

  • Ideally meant to be used by developers but it is quite useful for people who just want to get a feel of the Windows 7 OS before upgrading to it.
  • I tested the User Account Control (UAC) feature with Windows 7 from my browser. It allowed me to carry out tests on a live virtual machine. These tests are also accompanied by many videos which are very helpful.
  • I think if you are looking to upgrade to Windows 7 this would be quite a handy website to visit. It is also handy if you are interested in knowing more about Windows 7 without actually purchasing it.

Requirements

  • Windows Live ID
  • Internet Explorer 6 and above. (Drawback was I could not use my Chorome browser for using this websites virtual Windows 7)
  • Requires Active X installed on your browser. (You will need to install Silver Light for IE browser)

A software application to change to Google Public DNS and backup the old one

I am sure almost everyone reading our blog is aware of Google’s Public DNS service. It is a faster way for looking to make DNS lookups while you use the internet.  A day later there were many blog posts across the internet describing how to change from your ISP’s DNS address to Google’s Public DNS.

I came across a software application which does that with a couple of clicks.

  1. It changes your DNS servers to Google Public DNS and backs up the old DNS address you were using.
  2. With another click you can restore your ISP’s DNS address. 😉

Here is a screenshot of the me using Google DNS Helper software.

Try it out and easily move back and forth with Google DNS with just a click of the button.

Look back at the year with Digg 365

It is year end and a lot of people end up looking back at things they liked doing over the year. On the same lines Digg has a very good tool that helps you look back through the years. It shows the top 10 links that were shared on Digg.com for every year, month and day.

About Digg 365

  • It seems to be heavily inspired from Google’s Wonder-wheel but it sure makes a lot of sense. Instead of having a bland calendar with dates and categories Digg 365 is a very innovated way to do show archives in a interactive way. 😉
  • This is not a search feature but a calendar feature. It shows the top 10 links for the year, month and even every day.
  • You can also sift through eight categories.
  • The round shaped controls are pretty much awesome and it is a great way to look back and read up the top links.

Try out Digg 365 and tell me if you liked it through your comments. Also discuss if you know of any similar websites which share archives in such a creative way. 🙂

Smarter Fox is a Firefox browser add-on which does exactly what it claims. It makes your browser a lot more smarter. It quickens up the browsing experience a lot but giving the user a host of options to search and lookup information.

Smarter Fox Features

  • Awesomebar: This is a enhanced version of Bookmarks. If you want to go to a particular page just press Ctrl + Spacebar. There is a screen that pops up with all the websites you can visit in a click of a button. To add your favorite website into the Awesomebar just drag and drop the link from the address bar. It will be added automatically. 😉
  • The pop up bubble is another great feature. Just highlight any text and bubble pops up with symbols of Google, Twitter, Wikipedia. Click on the symbol and a page opens after searching with the relevant service.

Example of Pop-up bubble using Fastest Fox.
