Under Sea Cable Cut Disrupts Internet in Middle East and South Asia

Since last one day or two, I noticed that my BSNL broadband connection was too slow and I was wondering whether there is some problem in my local exchange, in the mean time I came across an article where in it was mentioned about the faulty optical fibres that prevented Internet users to have a consistent and speedy Internet connectivity. Also, those optical fibres break resulted in disruption of International telephone services.

As per the statement:

Breaks in three submarine cables which link Europe and the Middle East have disrupted Internet and telephone services in the Middle East and South Asia, officials said on Saturday. The disruption reduced Egypt’s Internet capacity by about 80 percent. Technicians were restoring some capacity by diverting communications traffic through the Red Sea.

So, not only India, people of many other countries as well, are suffering from Internet outage atleast, if not long distance phone calls. Though, the exact cause of break in sub-marine cables is not yet known, but according to experts, due to such disruption in services, the economy of these countries will surely be affected. The statement added, it may take few more days to the respective agencies to fix those faulty lines.

So all internet users out there, are requested not to panic if you too are suffering from slow internet connection, and wait until it takes the respective officials to restore the connectivity to normal condition. 🙂

Google Image Search Just Got Even Better

Few days ago, Google announced the launch of a new feature in their Image Search Engine, using which one can search exclusively for faces and later on they released photo search feature. But now, they realized to do something even better and the output is what I am going to write about.

Now Google have included features to search for Line Drawings and Clip arts as well. So, if you are looking for some specific formats or types of images, then you can now easily locate the images you are looking for using these new options in Google Image Search.

To check out these new options, I personally tried searching images using the different options for the Keyword ‘Christmas’ and here are those images.

If you remember, few days ago I mentioned a feature in Live image search using which we were able to find images using similar images. This new updates by Google, seems to be a reply to those guys at Microsoft. 🙂

New in Gmail Labs: Covert Google Mails into Google Docs

Just activated the newly launched labs feature in Gmail: ‘Create a Document’. Using this feature, you can easily convert any mail in your Gmail inbox into a Google doc and immediately start sharing them with your friends or even publish it on the World Wide Web (WWW).

As you can see on the image here, immediately after enabling the ‘Create a Document’ feature under Labs tab, you can view another option on the right side of all individual mail, clicking which, would divert you to Google docs with the whole contents of your mail on that page.

Just for experimenting, I tried making a document out of a mail in my mail box and here is the final output that I got just within fraction of seconds. Though, like many other labs feature, this feature too will not be used many a times, but will really prove helpful and useful when you want to share a specific mail in your mail box with a huge number of viewers.

New in Gmail Labs: ‘Tasks’

Among many other labs features in Gmail, latest being added into it is ‘Tasks’. It can just be another reason for you to stick up with Gmail. As the name goes, Tasks is a lab feature which enables you to manage your ‘To-do’ list from within your Gmail inbox. Also, just as in the inbuilt mail app of Leopard OS X, you can mark a particular mail as to-do which will later be visible under the task pane.

To activate Tasks, log into you Gmail account and go to-> Settings-> Labs-> Tasks and check the ‘enable’ button.  After that, as shown on the image below, automatically you can see a new option ‘Tasks’ under the contacts tab.

To enter a customized task, just hit your left mouse key anywhere in the blank area of the tasks pane and start typing, the best thing in it is that, you need not use any save option or whatsoever. All what you entered will be saved automatically and will be available next time when you open the tasks pane. Well, what if you want to add a mail into your tasks? For that just open the mail you want to add into tasks, then from the drop down list of ‘More actions’ select the option ‘Add to task’. Thats it! You are done.. Isn’t it too simple and easy? But this is not all, you can even add a separate note and a due date to each and every task you added into your list.

Though all these features are great and are welcome, but one thing in ‘Tasks’ disappointed me was no option to sync the tasks and its schedules with Google calendar. It would have been really great if there was any such option. Still we can expect such improvements in it because this new feature is still in beta testing called ‘Labs’ by Google. 🙂

MTNL to become India’s First and Only 3G service provider

Finally the most hyped third generation service of mobile communications is going to be launched in MTNL which will be the first and only operator to roll out 3G services in India. MTNL has announced to launch 3G services tomorrow (11th December) on the presence of our Prime Minister – Dr. Manmohan Singh. Initially, the service would be made available only for the residents of Delhi and later on it would be expanded to Mumbai and other Indian cities, added a statement in Times of India.

For those who don’t know what exactly 3G services is, it is the third generation services (also called 3G services) for mobile communication system that will enable a 3G compatible handset owner to stream live videos, make video calls and more, apart from being able to make traditional phone calls and use text messaging service. In a broader sense, 3G services enable a user to make faster data transfer of around 5-10 MBPS which is approximately 40 times greater than what 2G & 2.5G services claim to provide. The wiki entry for 3G says:

3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment.

Too much said and discussed about 3G services, all we require to do now is, just watch how successful and useful will 3G be in India and how much additional time will it take other private operators to roll out this modern services.

Wal-Mart to sell Apple I-Phone for $99?

There are rumors since a couple of months that Apple will reintroduce 4GB I-phone, in collaboration with Wal-Mart, just for $99. Though there are no official news about it, this rumor will surely remind you of Steve Jobs’ statement, where he disclosed his willingness to bring down I-phone’s price to the lowest in the market. Even I am not sure whether there is any such deal between Apple and Wal-mart, but I think, an I phone for just $99 would be really worthy for every mobile phone users.

Also, there are possibilities that it may be a news leaked prior to its announcement. Apple may decide to bring this offer keeping in mind, the launch of so called I-phone killer handset Nokia N97. Well, I am pondering that, even if Apple comes up with any such deal will that $99 offer ever come to India?
