Why Facebook Chats’ New Version Makes it Best in The World!

I am not a chat junkie, neither I have lots of free hours to spend daily on various social networking sites. But when it comes to staying in touch with friend, I prefer Facebook and their new chat interface is making me love Facebook more and more.

Here are my reasons…

facebook-chat-new-feature-1

Group Visibility

Facebook was allowing you to create and manage groups of friends from sometime. Now these same groups are integrated into chat feature. You can set your visibility settings for each group individually.

You can also select which friend-lists will appear by clicking on “Friend Lists”. One step ahead you can mark yourself online/offline for any group (friend list) by clicking on a small icon present next to each friend-list name. (see screenshot)

I had already grouped all Facebook contacts into different groups and now all I did was set myself invisible for all unwanted contact in one go! 😉

Chat features now has many new options. Some of them deserves immediate attention.

  1. “Show Only Names in Online Friends” – If you have may long friend-list then their display pic thumbnail may make you scroll a lot! Use this option and you will get compact list with names only. This will hide your friends pics and their status updates displayed below their name.
  2. “Keep Online Friends Window Open” – This keeps your online friend list window always open. I find this option very cool for wide screen monitors. Facebook have center aligned fix width design which leaves lots of whitespace on both sides. So keeping online friends window open just uses that whitespace!

Other reasons!

I have few more reasons to love Facebook chat! Some of them are as follows…

  1. Browser Based – Facebook chat is browser based! Which makes it accessible from most platforms. Now this has nothing to do with me being a Mac user. I can use Facebook chat/Google Talk from Mac using Adium desktop app but I prefer accessing these things from browsers.
  2. Light Weight – I like its overall interface which is very quick to load. Unlike Meebo or other web-based chat apps, Facebook chat eats up very less bandwidth.
  3. Popup Version – I have bookmarked popup version chat URL and I use it more frequently. This reminds me Yahoo’s web-based chat engine in old days.  Here is the link – http://www.facebook.com/presence/popout.php

Things I still want to change!

First thing they should fix is “history feature”. Google talk changed my habit of taking notes from chat sessions. If I need some link my friend gave me over a chat I directly go to Gmail chat history and find it out there. Now with Facebook, I find myself in problem sometime and then have to send an email like “dude I lost that kool link about blah…blah app u gave to me over chat. plz send it again!”

As of now you can mark yourself online or offline only. I want ability to stay invisible at group-level as well.

Overall this new version of Facebook chat is way better than others! I personally find it best!

What do you think?

Orkut Moved Adsense Ads Above The Fold!

A bad update for all Orkut users!

Orkut started showing adsense ads above the fold now. This is at the place where you used to see “my friends”.

Orkut is showing Adsense on top!-2.png

They have shifted “my friends” section below. Orkut was showing adsense ads from last few month but earlier they were below “my friends” block.

If you find this is irritating you can use AdBlock firefox extension. You will get ad-free internet not only from Orkut, but all sites! 😉

Thanks Deepak for the screenshots! 🙂

Privacy issues continue to haunt Google Street View, this time in Germany!

clip_image002After Greece, the Google Street View controversy moves on to Germany! German authorities have asked Google to improve its privacy protection measures before it can allow pictures of German city streets on its Street View service.

Google says that it would be blurring faces and vehicle license plates when displaying the images online and that it would promptly respond to removal requests.

German officials, however, feel that Google privacy policy is flawed and it could be easily violated since Google employees will have access to the “un-blurred” pictures.

Marit Hansen, the state’s deputy officer in charge of privacy protection said:

“We find the project extremely alarming… It gathers personal data and puts it on the Internet. That will not do.”

Reinhold Harwart, the leader of the CDU on the town council said:

“We are not going to let this happen. You can see everything in those photos! That is opening house and home to criminals!”

Street View provides 360-degree panoramic images of urban areas that the user can manipulate, as part of Google’s Internet mapping products.

Google Street View was launched in 2007 and since then it has reached out to more than 100 cities worldwide. At the same time it has faced complaints related to privacy from many people and institutions that have been photographed.

Well, well… where do you think the Google street view controversy is headed for next?

Google’s Street View controversy moves on to Greece

clip_image002

Since its launch in 2007, Google Street View has reached out to more than 100 cities worldwide, however has faced complaints related to privacy from many people and institutions that have been photographed. Street View provides 360-degree panoramic images of urban areas that the user can manipulate, as part of Google’s Internet mapping products.

Last month, some residents of an English village formed a human chain to stop one of Google camera vans. Last year, the Pentagon barred Google from photographing the U.S. military bases for Street View.

A few days back, Google was stopped from gathering street-level images in Greece. Greece’s Data Protection Authority (DPA) rejected Google’s bid to roam Greek streets with cameras mounted on the vehicles and asked Google for a clarifications on:

  1. How it will store and process the original images taken?
  2. How it will safeguard the images from privacy abuses?
  3. How it plans to inform the public about their activities?

The DPA statement said:

“Simply marking the car is not considered an adequate form of notification. The authority has reserved judgment on the legality of the service pending the submission of additional information, and until that time will not allow (Google) to start gathering photographs.”

Google’s assurance to the public:

Google had earlier assured that it would blur faces and vehicle license plates when displaying the images online and that it would promptly respond to removal requests.

However, that doesn’t seem to be enough.

Google statement said that expanding the service to Greece would help local residents and tourists alike:

  • Those unable to visit Greece in person would be able to see the Acropolis and other ancient sites from their living rooms
  • This is similar to how the service already lets users take virtual tours of the Colosseum in Rome and the Eiffel Tour in Paris.

The tool has become one of Google’s more controversial projects, with privacy advocates warning it could compromise people’s rights and leave them open to abuses by criminals or snooping government agencies.

Twitter Improved Email Notifications

Just noticed, renewed email notifications from Twitter. Twitter like many other social service sends you notifications via email for activities on your account. I personally use email notifications to stay updated when somebody starts following me.

Below is recent email notification from Twitter…

Twitter New Email Notification-1.png

And below is snapshot of old email notification from Twitter…

pooja is now following you on Twitter! - rahul286@gmail.com - Gmail.png

You can clearly notice the difference between the above two.

New email notification show’s display pic of Twitter user which makes it easier to identify who started following you without visiting their profile. It also list stats about her account like number of twitter users following her, number of updates she had posted over time and number of twitter user she is following.

Looks like Twitter is trying hard to improve entire service. Orkut did similar thing when they launched major improvements to their network last year.

Orkut is highlighting scraps sent from mobile

Orkut added support from mobile Orkutting sometime back by creating a mobile optimized version at m.orkut.com.

Today I noticed some scraps were marked as being “sent from orkut mobile” as highlighted below.

  orkut - sent from mobile.png

Initially, I confused it with scraps sent from mobile phones as SMS. I guess in Brazil people can use more Orkut features via mobile SMS than getting scrap notifications.

On side-note, even though Orkut do not list Airtel as supported carrier for SMS notifications, its working now! 😉

Missing Email Address in Google Reader’s Sharing Option [Solution]

Google Reader is my favorite web based feed reader. I often come across posts which I want to share with directly with few people. Most of the time I am unsure if they are using Google Reader at their end. So best bet is to “email” posts to their mailbox right from Google Reader.

Now as Swati joined our blog network recently, I often needed to send her news tips and article links for Google Reader. What surprised me that Gmail’s autocomplete finds her email address correctly but Google Reader’s email function failed to autocomplete her email address. This is quite annoying as I frequently need to send her posts from Google Reader. 🙁

Google Reader - Email-1.png

Solution:

Our another editor Deepak Jain found this solution few months back. It basically point to Gmail’s recently introduced “suggested contact” feature.

  1. Go to Gmail’s contacts.
  2. Find suggested contacts list.
  3. There you will find the missing email address. Just move it to main contacts.Suggested Contacts - Gmail-1.png
  4. Now if your Google Reader is already open, reload it.
  5. Now you must be able to see missing email address is Google Reader.

That’s it. You will see “missing contacts” in Google Reader now.

Google Reader - Mail.png

For some weird reason, Gmail may move some particular email address to “suggested contacts” few more times. In that case follow above step until Gmail starts respecting your choice! 😉
