Want to Download Free from Rapidshare! [Funny]

If you download often from Rapidshare, then you might be familiar with image verification code they put on download pages. These image codes are meant to stop computer programs downloading from their server.

Now if you think those image codes being easy, then check out following challenge. Of course this must be mock up.

If you really like to take above challege, check Wikipedia entry for Riemann hypothesis! 😉

Embarrassingly, I don’t remember who created above image as I saved it randomly long time back on my system. If you know who deserves credit, please let me know via comments. 🙂

FriendFeed – Best Social Aggreagator

FriendFeed is one service which I am using from long time but never mentioned it. It is a social aggregator which allows you to build a customized feed, made up of content generated or shared by your friends on various social networks as well as their own blogs.

Content includes web pages, photos, videos and music that your friends and family are sharing on Twitter, Del.icio.us, Digg, flickr, Last.fm, YouTube and many other social websites.

FriendFeed let you spy on your friends and family members. Of course, everyone on FriendFeed can control contents that show up in their updates.

Now all such updates from your list are delivered to you via a feed that you can subscribe in your favorite feed reader. If you don’t use feeds, you can get all updates delivered to your mailbox as well.

Also if you think this is just a kind of spying service, then check some features listed below, explained by Amit Agarwal.

  • Create ‘River of News’ from Your Favorite Blogs
  • Track Your Favorite Topics (like Google Alerts)
  • Find People Who Enjoy Reading Your Content
  • Subscribe to Interesting Discussions
  • Get Productive – Skip the Links That You Have Read Already
  • Take Your FriendFeed With You to Facebook, iGoogle, etc

Finally check following sildeshow by Daryl Pereira if you still need fore info about FriendFeed.

Orkuts New Event Feature. Google Calendar Coming to Orkut?

Just noticed half-baked events feature on Orkut in left sidebar as highlighted in screenshot below.

orkut events feature-1.jpg

Technically this feature is completely useless as of now. I tried adding events to it but failed to find option to do that in the first place. It looks like this event feature will act like a To-Do manager application. Whatever Google is upto, lets hope this time we will see some nice integration with Google’s already existing calendar service.

It took forever for Google to poorly integrate Picasa with Orkut. Yes, if you don’t know, then you can insert Picasa images into Orkut scrap. Details are here.

Vodafone to launch iPhone on 22 August, starting from Rs. 31000 in India

vodafone-apple-iphone Just checked official mail from Vodafone confirming launch date and price of Apple iPhone in India. Vodafone is launching iPhone in India from August 22, 2008 with 8GB & 16GB models, priced at Rs. 31,000 and Rs. 36,100 respectively.

Vodafones rival, Airtel is also launching iPhone on 22 August probably at the same price.

This is much higher than what I have expected. Also as these prices are clearly targeting very rich consumer section, these iPhones may come altogether with different plan with higher call rates / GPRS charges.

But I am still hopeful that prices will drop significantly once telecom companies make enough profits from first wave of iPhone customers. So I will surely wait for atleast 2 months before buying iPhone.

If you happen to buy it, please mail me your picture with your iPhone at rahul@devilsworkshop.rsites.dev6.rt.gw. I am planning to create gallery of our proud  iPhone owners.

AdSense for Feeds – FAQ & Guide

Few days back, AdSense opened their feed advertising program for all publishers. I put AdSense ads in some of my feeds. The whole process of adding AdSense codes in feeds is not that simple as it may seem. Here I am listing few resources, which can be helpful for all bloggers/publisher who still have questions about AdSense for Feeds.

  1. AdSense for Feeds Video

Google Product Manager & founder of FeedBurner, Steve Olechowski introduces AdSense for feeds. If you are not familiar with feeds, then this is best way to get started.

  1. AdSense for Feeds Guide

Ionut posted everything in detail with nice screenshots. If you know what feed means, then his post is the only resource you need to get started.

3. FeedBurner MyBrand Issue

This is for those who use FeedBurner with their MyBrand service. If you remember, while configuring your DNS to use MyBrand, you had created a CNAME record for feeds subdomian. Now to use AdSense for existing feeds at FeedBurner you need to update that CNAME record as pointed out by Amit Agarwal.

As of now it is like:

feeds CNAME feeds.feedburner.com.

Change it to:

feeds CNAME ghs.google.com.

If you forget to update above CNAME record, then your feeds may become unavailable when requested through your domain.

If you know any other guide which covers any missing info, please let us know.

Enjoy AdSense for feeds. 🙂

New Orkut Mobile Site for Symbian Smartphones

Few months back in April, Orkut launched mobile version of their social network at http://m.orkut.com.

Now they have upgraded their mobile site with some nice features like photo uploading, click-to-call, better friend search, etc.

Good thing is, to use this new site you no need to download nay special mobile software or remember new address. Just go to old mobile site at http://m.orkut.com from your Symbian Series 60 (3rd Edition) handsets browser and you will be served with this new feature rich version.

You can check here, which handsets are Symbian Series 60 (3rd Edition).

Hopefully orkut will expand this to other handsets. I think they could do better by creating a java client as it exists for Gmail. That way they could have cover wider user-base.

Enjoy new orkut… 🙂

Adsense for Feeds is here

Just checked my AdSense account and delighted to see AdSense for Feeds enabled on it.

Google AdSense - Adsense For Feeds-1-1.jpg

But putting AdSense ads in feed will take time for me. Although Google brought FeedBurner, there is no automatic way to integrate AdSense and Feedburner. This has to be done manually by AdSense support team. I mailed them as per official help instruction page.

Like AdSense for Content, ads in feed are also contextual in nature. So I am expecting nice revenue from this AdSense for Feeds program. I guess this will offset my 10% AdSense revenue loss due to retirement of Adsense referral for products program.

I think bloggers with full text feeds will get more benefit as their posts will have more text to target.

If you use FeedBurner with MyBrand option, then you may face some problem. Amit Agarwal already posted workaround for this.

Happy Independence Day to all our readers from India. 🙂

[Update: Ionut posted this in more details at Google Operating System.]

Orkut Albums Got Faster with AJAX

Noticed today change in Orkuts album navigation. Previous and Next image links (highlighted in screenshot below) now loads consecutive images using AJAX. In simple words when you click on these links now, they loads previous/next image in album without refreshing entire page. All this mean, you can browse orkut albums faster now.

Picture 2.jpg

This feature is still seems under experiment. I came across some weird messages and also loading indicator image which you can note in above screenshot is appearing in top-left corner for first image load.

Orkut can still improve many things with album navigation. May be they can do it the way I did it one year ago with my AJAX Style Orkut album script. I stopped updating that script, but still this screenshot can give you feeling of how it changed Orkut Album Navigation.

If you have any suggestion for better orkut album navigation, please share with us. 🙂

Happy Independence Day to all our readers from Pakistan.

Overview of WordPress Plugin Series

This is last post in my first wordpress plugin series. Rather than making your list larger by suggesting more plugins, in this post I will write summary of things which changed after this series experiment.

First and most important, now this blog allows its commentators to edit their comments as suggested by Johnson & other readers. I will also enable paged navigation for archive pages soon, as suggested by Pavan.

Also while preparing for this series, I revisited broken link checker plugin. I stopped using it few months back after it broke itself with a wordpress version upgrade in past. I am using it now again. 🙂

Now after giving away list of my favorite plugins, I request wordpress bloggers here to share their favorite plugins.

Apart from this, personally I enjoyed this series writing experiment. It turned out to be more time-consuming than what I had expected. Thats why other topic got less attention in last week.

I will give some extra time in advance for my next series so this won’t happen in future again. Meanwhile, I would love to know what you like to read in next series. Few topics that are confusing me are AdSense, Ad Networks, Gmail, SEO tipc, Blogging tipc, Security (Hacking), etc.

Waiting for your feedback,

-Rahul Bansal 🙂

6 WordPress Plugins for Easier Administration and Maintenance

Today I am listing wordpress plugins for easier administration and maintenance. Main goal is to automate tasks like database backup, upgrading, etc.

1. Database Backup Plugin

This is most important plugin you must use. It performs complete wordpress database backup and optionally send it to email address given, on daily or weekly basis.

Technically if you have your wordpress database backup with you, you can recover your blog from any disaster.

2. Automatic Upgrade Plugin

This plugin allows you to automatically upgrade wordpress installation following official instructions listed here. It performs tasks: backing-up database, plugin deactivation, downloading latest wordpress version, upgrading files/database, etc all automatically. If anything goes wrong, it lets you roll back all the changes.

I use subversion installation of wordpress so upgrading is really simplest task for me. But it requires knowledge of Linux and SVN, also shell access to your webhosting server.

If you don’t know anything about subversion, then best way is to use this plugin to upgrade wordpress.

3. WordPress Security Scan

Many people think open-source is insecure. But I think security is something you should take care of yourselves. Of course wordpress is much robust and in my opinion best open source script ever made. This plugin, scans your wordpress installation for any misconfiguration or holes through which your blog can be compromised.

It generates report and also help you out correctly configure your blog from security point of view. This plugin is in very active development and continuously adding more security checks with each version being released.

4. Akismet Spam Protection

This could have been listed in comments plugin but I use it in general for fighting against spam. This uses wordpress community feedback about commentator to decide if a comment, pingback or trackback is spam or not. I think this is better way to fight against spam, compared to image verification you can alternatively put on your blog.

This plugin really makes moderating comments, etc really easy. It blocks almost all spam. Akismet can be used with contact form too.

This plugin comes with your wordpress by default, so activate if you haven’t done that yet.

5. Broken Link Checker Plugin

As name suggests, this plugin checks periodically all your posts for broken links. It then generates summary of all broken links which you can either manually replace by correct link or remove at all.

A broken link is really bad for your reputation as a blogger. Imagine a first time visitor to your old post finding link it contains broken. Do you think he will come to your blog again?

6. Download Manager Plugin

WordPress as a CMS offers no way to track file download statistics. If you distribute various types of downloadable files on your blog, then you might be very well interested in tracking number of downloads they receive among other statistical data.

This plugins adds a very nice download manager functionality to your wordpress blog.

Apart from this, I strongly recommend using one-click installer plugin. It improved a lot recently, and it will really make trying and managing different plugins really easy.

Feedback Please…

So here I am done with my first series writing experiment. I would love to here your feedback/suggestions so that I can improve next series. I am yet to finalise a topic for it but I would love to hear about that.

I will post a summary post for entire series tomorrow. If you have any really nice plugin to share, please let me know via comments. 🙂
