Dreamhost to offer unlimited bandwidth and storage for all!

Dreamhost, our webhost, in their recent monthly newletter informed that they are moving all Dremhost customers to unlimited bandwidth and storage space plan over the next few months (or years).

Those who are already touching limit can choose to get transferred to unlimited plan early. There is a new link under billing section in Dreamhost control panel, which offers free and permanent upgrade to unlimited disk and bandwidth plan.

When you click link highlighted in above screenshot, you will be taken to a page which lists some of problems you may encounter during transition.

(click on above image to view full-size alternative)

Some of above mentioned points seems risky to me and as my bandwidth as well as disk consumption is still around 1%, I personally choose to wait for upgradation. But it looks sure that with time all Dreamhost accounts will be transferred on totally unlimited plan.

You may opt-in for free and early upgrade if you are already hitting limits… 😉

Browsershots – Online Web Design Testing in Different Browsers

This article is for web designers here. I recommend this articles to all bloggers as well. Many bloggers go for free third-party themes which may not follow standards all the time, so you can check if theme you are using is working fine in all major browsers.

Reason for highlighting major in above line is, no matter which theme you choose or code, it will not render properly in decade old browsers unless you are writing plain old HTML without any CSS or JavaScript.

As a (good) habit, I used to test any of my web design from Firefox 2/3, Internet Explorer 6/7, Safari 3.1, Opera 9.5 and Google Chrome. These browsers make most of the browser market share, so we can safely assume that our web design will render well from most of the browsers.

Now those who want to be sure about it, such for corporate projects or working on a platform where you can not install all famous browsers, like IE 6 and above on Mac, you can use Browsershots.

browsershots

At Browsershots, you just need to specify URL of a webpage and select list of browsers. They have around 70+ browsers in total to select from and you can select them all if you are serious about your design.

I personally select only browsers which are important as larger list often take time upto 2/3 hours to process. You can download all screenshots captured by Browsershots at once or view them online as well.

Downloading is recommended as they do not store them on their server for long time. This service is free and so it has limitations. You can capture around 100 screenshots only per day per site. Paid users get higher limit as well as more priority which means they don’t have to wait for hours to get their capturing job done.

Browsershots is a good service but you can not test many things like JavaScript effects, tabbed navigation using it. So use Browsershots alongwith few top browsers on your desktop to test your web design perfectly.

Orkut’s New & Clean Album Page Design

Just noticed some minor but nice changes on Orkut album pages. Looks like Orkut team really got a creative mind on board as few days back they nicely enhanced birthday reminder section on homepage.

Earlier album listing and individiual photo listing in album had same user interface, with 4 rows and 3 columns. It used to create little confusion about thumbnail you are viewing as it could be photo inside album or album cover itself.

Now albums are given more weight and details as they always deserved and result in next to you… 🙂

I guess Orkut can still make use of free space, next to thumbnail on right-side, to give more details about albums. Like total number of comments, or list of people tagged in current album.

New Theme for Devils Workshop!

Update: We offer professional WordPress Theme designing service now! Check it out! 🙂

If you have visited Devils Workshop from your web browser in last 18 hours, you may have noticed new theme by now.

As expected, I received mix response for theme. But before analyzing them, I would like to highlight some points which were on my mind while working on new theme.

First thing, I was so sure about was simplicity and performance. So this theme have just 1 image as its part! Next as Devils Workshop is more than 2 years old now, I wanted to come up with navigation which will be easy, relevant and contextual in nature.

It took me around 6 months to finalize things which you can see now. Here are some details which may go unnoticed…

Navigation…

  • Home Page: Rather than blindly listing 10 recent posts, Homepage will now have at the top “Featured post” section, the most important one. Next a user can have a look at “New (recent)” and “Best” content simultaneously. Scrolling further, one can check in decreasing order of importance posts marked for Social Networking users, Bloggers, Internet & Technology. At each level, tabbed-navigation is provided to show most popular relevant subcategories.
  • Single Post Page: Most of the users visits single post pages via search engines. So it is very important to show them “best” and “relevant” content. Now just after the post, one can see, “Related”, “Most Popular” and “Recent” Posts in single place, again using tabbed-navigation. Tabbed-navigation really make use of screen-space efficiently. It also hides unnecessary information as per user-choice and saves a lot of scrolling.
  • Archive Pages: Similar “tabbed-navigation” is used in archive pages but with relevance. For example, if you are visiting a monthly archive, you will be most popular posts in default tab. If you are visiting a category page, you will see most popular posts in that category in default tab. A visitor will always get “local view”. This is sort of tracking user activity without any cookies or privacy concerns. 😉

Aesthetics…

  • Colors: Theme uses 2-shades of blue, 1 shade of gray with default white background and black text-color for main (post) contents. There is no images, no-rounded corner and other so-called “web 2.0” stuff.
  • No First Impression Philosophy: I do agree that first impression lasts longer. But hate it or love it, Google will force you to visit Devils Workshop again and again. So its better to go for minimalistic design, where you can spend more time on reading articles, without putting strain on your eyes.
  • Many old readers are disappointed with new designs aesthetics. But I really think you will soon adapt to new theme soon. When wordpress changed its admin interface in version 2.5, I hated it, because I had my own comfort-zone with old theme. But now I am comfortable with new theme as well.

Designed for Multi-author…

  • Every single post and archive page will have authors avatar beside it. Also author comments are highlighted on their posts.
  • A dedicated introductory paragraph “About Devil”, from bottom part is replaced by contributors list. Also article count beside author name is removed. Some said it should be put back. Again your opinion is waited on this.

This theme is made using so many things, that permanently carrying there names in footer will clutter it. Still here is my vote of thanks to…

Thanks to Anil, Deepesh, Johnson, Gaurav, Gautam, SauravjitDeepak, Debjyoti and Manpreet. These guys spent their time and energy to improve this theme when it was under-construction.

Here are some valuable comments/questions…

Arjun suggested a separate “recent post” widget in sidebar. I guess one after the post in tabbed-navigation box is enough.

Pavan reported a bug in Firefox 2.0 which was almost distorting all comments, including comment form. Thanks Pavan for quick reporting and attaching screenshot in your mail. I made some changes now, and tested it on Firefox 2 from Windows XP machine. I hope its fixed by now for all. If you see any problem with theme, please let us know. Also include your browser information in it.

Feedback Please…

This is my first wordpress theme from almost scratch. As Johnson suggested, I should have posted about all issues/codes used in theme. Bit in 6 months time, I have gone through more than 500 wordpress themes, and have 200+ bookmarked resources, tutorials on wordpress and in-general CSS. So putting all efforts at one-place is quite hard.

Still if you like something particular and want more detail about it, please let me know. I would love to post about any part of this theme. I am working on few more themes so your feedback can help me make them better as well.

Thank you all for your time and valuable feedback.

Enjoy new Devils Workshop… 🙂

Use Google Search as it was in 2001!

In honor of their 10th Birthday, Google put oldest search engine index available online for use which dates back to 2001. This means you can use Google search as it was in 2001. It is not just home page or logo but also search result will be served from 2001.

Just out of curiosity I tried searching “Rahul Bansal” but I failed to get any result pointing to me! This is quite expected as in 2001, I did not know much about computers and Internet. I got my first computer at the end of 2002 and it was 2006, when I created this blog and my first web presence. More about this is posted on about page.

It was nice searching back in time. I experienced true time-travel as it was entirely different world. Of course, I could not follow most of the result. Search results are served from wayback machines archives.

If you are a techie or student of computer science/engineering, you will also like this powerpoint presentation which describes Google’s System Architecture. I had case study of Google as part of my M.Tech. course. Unfortunately, I failed to find other presentations which have details about Pagerank algorithm and general working of Search engine. Anyway below is what I found, rest you can always Google! 😉

If you are a Google fan, I am sure you will enjoy it.  Just out of curiosity, wanted to know if anyone here used Google Search back in 2001. 🙂

Google SMS Channels with Links

Without a doubt, Google SMS Channels is really a good service. Many bloggers are creating SMS channels dedicated for their blog, so that their readers can follow their blog from mobile.

I have created Devils Workshop SMS channel last night and started receiving SMS for each post as it was getting published. But I was disappointed to see that there was no link to article in SMS I received. Links could help people having GPRS/wi-fi enabled cellphones browse articles from their handset.

I tried finding such option first, but I failed. So I created a small script which accept your original feed URL and give you link to a new feed which:

  1. First shorten links to your article using famous service TinyUrl. This takes care of 160 character limit of SMS.
  2. Next it append such shortened link to your feeds title.

Now when Google SMS channel will fetch such converted link, they will send short urls to articles in SMS updates.

Below is screenshot which highlights this difference:

How to use:

1. Getting a converted link

  • You can either get converted link using web interface provided at Google SMS Channels with TinyUrl
  • OR simply prefix http://gsmslinks.rtcamp.com/ to your feed URL.

Example: http://feeds.devilsworkshop.rsites.dev6.rt.gw/rb286 will become http://gsmslinks.rtcamp.com/http://feeds.devilsworkshop.rsites.dev6.rt.gw/rb286

2. Modifying Existing Channel

  • Just edit RSS/Atom feed URL. If you are creating a new channel, enter converted feed link here otherwise replace old link with converted link. Please DO NOT forget to remove prefix http:// from links as it is added by Google by default.

  • Next better click on Preview button to check if desired results are coming in mobile emulator screen on page. If yes, click Update Channel button below.

If you have any question, please ask via comments only. If there exist option to do this, please let me know. 🙂

Orkut Improved Upcoming Birthday Reminder

Just noticed on my Orkut homepage, upcoming birthday reminder feature of Orkut received a facelift too. Yesterday we posted about Orkut’s new email notification in action.

They anticipated one really good thing time, and that is, if its your friends birthday today you would like to scrap them to convey your wishes. So to make it easy, on upcoming birthday page, for your friends who have birthday today, Orkut added direct link to their scrapbook with title “leave a scrap”. Also one step ahead, date itself get replaced by text “Today”. This is really like great for me as I always have trouble remembering current dates.

There is still room for two small things:

  1. Clicking on “leave a scrap” opens that person’s scrapbook. It would have been better if they just put inline scrap box. One we use in our scrapbook to reply to scraps sent by other.
  2. Also like “Today”, they could also highlight birthdays coming “Tomorrow”. As one would like to plan in advance if the person is special. Again to differentiate them, “Today” can be shown in bold while “Tomorrow” can be shown in normal font.

Well above are very small things, considering the overall improvement. So this time, I think Orkut team deserves 10/10. 🙂

After struggling for more than a month, I failed to keep pace with growing workload. So I have decided to formalize everything and soon Devils Workshop will be part of rtCamp, an unconventional company I always dreamt of.

About rtCamp…
