RssBirthday never lets you forget important anniversaries!

clip_image002How often do you forget birthdays and anniversaries? Please tell me “very often” because then I will not be the only one here feeling guilty about missing an old friend’s birthday. I am terrible at remembering dates. I keep going to my Orkut account, only to check the upcoming birthdays. But how much can you trust that? Not everyone would have added their birthdays to their profiles. Moreover, not everyone I know and want to remember the anniversaries of are on social networking sites!

I have now realized (better late than never!) that it wouldn’t really hurt to use a helping hand. With RssBirthday, remembering dates has become a lot easier.

What is RssBirthday?

RssBirthday is a FREE service that notifies you of the birthdays and anniversaries (or similar events) that you wish to be reminded about. After filling in the dates and subscribing it to your own RSS feed, you will get notified in your RSS reader, as and when that date approaches.

An easy 3-step process to get started:

image1

Nothing out-of-the-box that you wouldn’t have heard of earlier, but certainly very useful. There are many other reminder services online like ‘Memo to me’, ‘BigDates’, ‘Birthday-Reminders’, ‘Birthday Alarm’, etc, but I like RssBirthday because of its RSS feature.

Well, it doesn’t really matter which service you’re using… the main purpose is not to let yourself forget.

With all these and more, you don’t have to feel guilty or embarrassed anymore for having forgotten an anniversary or a special event. Now, when a friend wishes you ‘happy birthday’ sharp at 12 midnight, enjoy the conversation, instead of thinking at the back of your head “Damn! When was his???”

Free Online Backup for home users by Mozy

clip_image002A friend of mine always preached about the importance of taking backups. He regularly used to take backups of his data on an external hard disk, only to find out that one day it too crashed! Since then, he has been burning CDs every weekend to accomplish the back up tasks. Oh well… someone as lazy as I am would never have done that.

I tried to browse through to search for any cheap and reliable online solution that could help solve the problem. To my delight, I came across this cool service by Mozy. I read about the user reviews and pretty much liked it. Here is brief note on what this service is all about and how it can help you sleep peacefully.

About Mozy

With more than 750,000 users and 20,000 business customers, Mozy is one of the leaders in online data backup for consumers and businesses. It offers a simple, automatic and secure service for backing up your photos, music, outlook files and other important data safely backed up at a secured, remote location over the Internet. For home users, the service provides a free 2GB back up space.

clip_image004

Features

  • Simple to set up
  • Supports open/locked files
  • Schedules automatic backups
  • Performs backups automatically in the background, thus not effecting your work
  • Supports version control for your data
  • Encrypts all your data before transferring them to storage
  • Supports backs up of your Outlook files, thus protecting even your emails
  • Only backs up files that have been added or changed in subsequent backups, making the entire process take very less time
  • Restoring the backup files is easy. Though home users are limited to only one restore in the queue at a time.

Security

The most important feature for any online backup provider has to be its security. Mozy wins it here too. Mozi uses 128-bit SSL encryption for your data during the transmission and for storage at their servers. This means the moment any data leaves your computer, it will be encrypted by Mozy so that sniffers can not read your data. The data is then stored at Mozy using 448-bit Blowfish encryption. Which means, even if it is hacked it will not be readable. So it’s well protected when it’s stored as well as, when the data is being transferred from your computer.

How does it work?

  1. Sign up for MozyHome free account. Click here
  2. Download and install the software
  3. Follow the step-by-step instructions guide for the installation process
  4. Select the types of files or selected folders you want to back up

Support

For home users, Mozy currently supports Windows 2000, XP (32 and 64 bit), and Vista (32 and 64 bit), as well as Mac OS X 10.4 and higher.

For Windows Server 2000, 2003, 2008, Windows Home Server, and Mac OS Server 10.4 and higher, business users need to upgrade to the paid MozyPro version.

Other online backup services

  • Backblaze
  • Carbonite
  • Elephant Drive
  • IBackup
  • IDrive
  • Box.net
  • HP Upline

I think Mozy is great for lazy people like me and also for friends who keep preaching about backups!

What are you doing for your backups? Burning DVDs or CDs? Or taking backups on an external hard disk? In case you are already using Mozy or any of the other online backup service, do share your experience.

GE introduces micro-holographic disc supporting 500 GB of storage capacity

clip_image002

GE has developed micro-holographic disc that supports 500 gigabytes of storage capacity in a standard DVD-size disc! This is equal to the capacity of 20 single-layer Blu-ray discs, 100 DVDs or the hard drive for a large desktop computer. The micro-holographic disc can be read with systems similar to today’s Blu-ray and DVD Players.

Says Brian Lawrence, head of GE’s Holographic Storage program:

“The day when you can store your entire high definition movie collection on one disc and support high resolution formats like 3D television is closer than you think.”

Optical storage formats vs. holographic storage

  1. DVDs and Blu-ray discs store info only on the surface of the disc while the holographic storage technology uses the entire volume of the disc material. Multiple images can be placed in the same area, read by light at different angles.
  2. While CDs and DVDs store information in a liner fashion, holographic information storage is parallel, resulting in faster data transfer rates.
  3. GE’s holographic storage technology formats are so similar to current optical storage technology that the micro-holographic players will enable consumers to play back their CDs, DVDs and BDs.

It has been over 6 years that GE has been working on holographic storage technology. GE says that their researchers also have been very focused on making the technology easily adaptable to existing optical storage formats and manufacturing techniques.

It is being said that since GE’s micro-holographic discs can be read and played using similar optics to those found in standard Blu-ray players, the technology will pave the way for cost-effective, robust and reliable holographic drives that could be in every home!

Poor Age Verification System allow kids to buy Knives, Alcohol, Adult DVDs Online!

clip_image002Age verification system on the Web… hmm… how effective do you think it is? Do you think that by just making a customer ‘tick a box’ on a website is enough to verify their age?

A recent report tells us that thorough online age verification checks were not being done, making it very easy for children to buy weapons like big knives, alcohol, and other violent video games online.

Recently, when a test was carried out to check how effective the age verification processes on various websites were, the results were staggering.

Here is an example of a supervised test done by the Greenwich Council:

  1. A 16 year old bought a pre-paid credit card.
  2. Went online to buy age-restricted goods with it.
  3. The credit card was registered with the teenager’s REAL date of birth and address.
  4. Yet, the teenager managed to buy knives, alcohol beverages, and Adult DVDs and games from 12 separate online retailers.
  5. Only three websites asked the teenager to confirm his age at the time of purchase which the minor obviously got round by lying.
  6. The other sites would simply make the user accept a declaration stating that the buyer was of the right age to make the purchase of the products. (That’s very convenient, isn’t it?)

clip_image004

BBC reports that an Online Purchasing of Goods and Services (Age Verification) Bill has been proposed by Baroness Massey that calls for “robust” checking systems to be used by any site selling age-restricted goods.

According to this bill, the age-checking systems would have to be used if any one product was being sold out of the 20 listed, like:

  • Knives
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco products
  • Age-restricted video games
  • Age-restricted VCDs and DVDs
  • Solvents
  • Spray paints, etc.

The lack of a strong process just goes to show how dangerously minors are exposed to the Internet these days. It’s high time we go further than just making them tick a box or simply expect to get away with the website’s so-called “disclaimer”. Don’t you think?

New TV sets to be optimized for a complete browsing experience

image 2

Isn’t it more comfortable to be sitting back all relaxed in your cozy sofa or that reclining chair and use your big TV screen as your monitor, instead of trying hard to manage your laptop on your laps or hunch over a computer? Well, if you ask me… I’d go for that cozy sofa.

But how?

Some TV manufacturers are now enabling web functionalities into some of their new television sets using Ethernet cables or Wi-Fi dongles, which replaces the conventional set-up that we’ve known so far.

This process had already started a while back that allowed the internet to reach out to our TV screens by a range of devices like handheld game consoles using Wi-fi to mobile phones. For instance, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii… they have browsers and Wi-fi, which means going online on TV is simple.

But all these things provide only limited access.

The current scenario

  1. Samsung (in partnership with Yahoo) offers widgets which guide users to specially constructed mini sites for
    • Weather updates
    • Headline news feeds
    • Flickr
  2. Sony with its AppliCast feature has come up with similar stuff. Once an Ethernet cable connects a TV to a phone line, data from the web can also be accessed via the remote control.

What the future beholds

image 1

Till now, these TV sets are not equipped with full web browsers. Some sites involve lots of small writing that would be difficult to read from a distance. Many more widgets are on their way that can handle things like video streaming.

The content will be optimized for viewing on television and selected via a simple scrolling interface that you could access using a remote control.

(Source: bbc)
