Best Practices – Writing Efficient CSS For Faster Page Load

In my previous CSS post I wrote about how one can remove unwanted CSS using Tech 1 and Tech 2. And this article contains few CSS tips that every CSS developer must know.

Avoiding inefficient key selectors that match large numbers of elements can speed up page rendering.

How to use CSS selectors Efficiently

ID’s is the most efficient Selector whereas Universal Selector is the least efficient. There are four kinds of key selectors. Each of them are rendered with different efficiencies.

ADVERTISEMENT
  1. ID                        (Fastest to)
  2. Class
  3. Tag
  4. Universal             (Slowest)

The browser reads the selector from right to left. It means that in the selector  ul > li a the first thing interpreted is “a”. This first part is also referred to as the “key selector”, it is the element being selected. Now below is few examples generally we use in our Stylesheet.
#sidebar { }                 /* ID  /
.side-nav{ }                 /
Class /
ul { }                       /
Tag /
* { }                        /
Universal /
body.home #container { }     /
Descendent selectors class and ID/
ul li a.current { }          /
Descendent selectors-class *
ul li a { }                  /* Descendent selectors-Tag /
#content [title='home']      /
Universal */

When we use the child selector it is not very efficient to use, as it takes a lot of time to interpret.

#sidebar > li { } /* Slower than it might seem */

Since ID’s are so efficient we would think the browser could just find that ID quickly and then find the li children quickly. But actually, the relatively slow li tag selector is run first.

Tag qualify technique should be avoid because ID’s are unique, they don’t need a tag name to go along with it. It makes the selector less efficient. And it is better to avoid with the classes too even though they are not unique. We can make use of it in exceptional cases like li.first but that’s pretty rare.

ul#custom-list { }

Descendant selectors are the worst technique and most expensive. In other words it is the least efficient, for each element the CSS engine matches the key selector, the browser also have to traverse up the DOM tree, evaluating every ancestor element until it finds a match for the root element. The less specific the key, the greater the number of nodes that is to be evaluated.

html body ul li a {  }

Font-family cascades, so you may not need a selector to specify like specified in the 1st example. The 2nd one is as effective and far more efficient than the 1st one.

  1. #container li a { font-family: Georgia, Serif; }
  2. #container { font-family: Georgia, Serif; }

iBand – Live Music Show Using Apple’s iPhone/iPad Gadgets!

I have many friends who own a iPhone or a fancy iPod. I am personally not much of a fan of Apple and that can be probably because of my ignorance. I must confess that all my friends who have Apple products are die-hard fans. I came across this video online and realized why Apple products actually rock. They simply have this great ability to surprise everyone with their various features.

iBand – Live Music Show

Below is a video of a band called North Point which calls itself iBand. 🙂

The video consists of a live music performance where they are singing ‘Merry Christmas’ using Apple devices like iPhones and iPad.

Atomic Tom – “Take me out” -Live on NYC Subway

This is the second time I have been amazed by such innovative use of Apple gadgets. Another was a video which showed a group creating music on their iPhones. This video was also among the top 5 tech related videos watched on YouTube in 2010. This performance is almost as good as any with real instruments.

Closer home AR Rahman, the music maestro from Chennai, India also demonstrates a small music demo on this favourite iPad application.

What do you think about Apple products and the apps that allow such innovation? Also do you think the regular musical instruments will change into applications on a tablet in the future! I sure hope that guitars do last out the tablets. It is a little difficult to think of a Rock musician singing to a crowd of 50,000 holding a iPad. 🙂

10 Facts about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg

Who doesn’t know about Mark Zuckerberg? Everyone does now. He is a much-loved and hated person of the year 2010 (source). 🙂

Here I am mentioning some of the facts of his life that I could search online. 🙂

  • According to him, Facebook was developed so that it could be a platform to share photos, contact, communication all on an easier basis. But as much as he has made our lives so public, he prefers to keep it all private for himself. Have you ever noticed him speaking in public or writing things on his ‘wall’ ? 😀 In short he has applied some privacy settings for his life that we can’t pass through!
  • His personal Facebook account has no add request but yes there is a send message. 🙂 He is a normal human being with normal ‘Likes’ like Lady Gaga, Radiohead and others.
  • He is from a small place named Dobbs Ferry, New York and now reigning the world and staying at Palo Alto.
  • He pushes people to do more work in less time (Source). People usually surprise themselves by doing more work like that. He motivates them even.
  • He isn’t sentimental. Well, if we have seen the movie then at least we know that he doesn’t go for the sentimental stuff. 😀 He sees everything with a fresh eye.
  • People love to call him ‘Mark’ or just ‘Zuck’. 🙂 Famous people do get nick names eh!
  • The color of Facebook is Blue, because Zuck is colorblind. According to  New Yorker, he is red-green colorblind, which means the color he can see best is blue.
  • Money doesn’t matter to him. We can say this as earlier also he was offered $1 billion for it but he never choose to sell it.
  • He wears rubber sandals to board meetings. Wow, that’s what I call a very down to earth and simple person. 🙂
  • Mark Zuckerberg was born on May 14 and the same year as DNS (Domain Name  system) was introduced . Quite a date and year eh.

I am a fan of him, so the good points. If you do know of any other facts about him, something else do write it as comment below. If you have any tips or suggestions you can mail that tips[at]fbknol[dot]com.

[Solved] Why Facebook does Not allow You to Write some Comments

Yesterday I mentioned about a bug on Facebook that didn’t allow me to post a comment (source). I found the reason behind it.

In my message I was typing ‘OMG’ in the start. The problem with that statement was that it was starting with a word like OMG. You must be aware of the spams that had become viral in the past one or two months. The  statement of the spam was

OMG OMG now you see who viewed your profile.

Many people reported that spam, and the sentence. So what Facebook did is block all statements starting with OMG. I tweaked a bit and saw in Facebook’s Help center that a certain number of people have marked those words as spam, hence I was blocked by sending those.

The point here is that why block all the messages with OMG. What do you think? Share your views with me through comments below.

Christmas, related with snow, sledge, gifts and above all Santa Claus. But do children or youngsters think about all this now on Christmas?

I bet there are many who think about Facebook applications such as know your best friend this Christmas, or tag photographs this Christmas. Status messages like ‘Wish you all a Merry Christmas’ will be seen on every Facebook Profile. Facebook or social media usage is always increased during this festive season.

There can be many ways of looking at it. Facebook is the easiest way to communicate with all your friends and family. Imagine you are free, you are on leave and sitting in front of your laptop with Facebook open. The easiest way to wish everyone is write your wishes for everyone on your status message.

The other way can be send personalized messages to all your friends on their Facebook wall or Facebook messages. So, this is so easy you wished everyone and you didn’t even mind doing it. But should that be done ? Were holidays and festive seasons created for such purpose? No, no matter how much we are living in this internet world and can’t imagine our lives without Facebook or twitter, we do need real friends and real lives. Everyone even Mark Zuckerberg will love to receive gifts that are real. A life different from Facebook.

This is for what holidays are. To let you enjoy, meet friends, exchange gifts and share some quality time with everyone you love! I am not saying don’t use Facebook but get out of Facebook and twitter once. 🙂 I wish all my readers Merry Christmas. Feel free to comment. 🙂

Inside Story: Mobile Number Portability in India!

Much awaited Mobile Number portability or MNP (in short) is just about to launch next year in the first month for Category ‘A’ service areas. The rest of the country shall have to wait till March, 2011 to use the facility.

All Logos are respective trademarks for their companies

Generally, a huge number of customers are expecting to change their service providers as soon as MNP is launched in the various telecom circles, however most of them are still un-aware on the ‘What’ and ‘How’ of the process. Lets see what our inside story has to tell you on this:

  • Cost – If you are looking forward to change your operator, you just need to pay only up to Rs. 19 as Porting charges (as per TRAI), however the exact fee shall be decided by the operators themselves. The porting charge is non-refundable even if you want to cancel your request for MNP, which is possible within 24 hours of the request.
  • No Dues – There should be no bills pending with your existing operator if you want to migrate.
  • Time – It shall take a maximum of 4 days for all telecom circles except the states of J&K, Assam and North East where it will take a maximum of 12 days. The number, during this process, shall be disconnected for a maximum time of 2 hours.
  • Minimum usage – A porting request can be made only after 90 days from the date of activation of a connection, or after 90 days from the date of previous porting, in case of a ported number.
  • Instant Reply – A UPC (Unique Porting Code) shall be sent to the mobile phone after a SMS is sent to 1900 (regular SMS tariff applies).

MNP has been successfully implemented in Haryana and Karnataka Telecom circles, however the rest of India awaits the new bride with joy.
