Language of Spam – Templates and Translations for Multilingual Attacks

According to MessageLabs Intelligence report for July, there has been a spike in the spam levels in countries where English is not the primary language. Spammers are becoming multi-lingual by using automated translation services to enable multiple language spam runs. They are targeting countries correctly rather than sending spam to all countries English language.

Reports indicate more than 95 % spam emails in Germany and The Netherlands, an increase by 13% since May. Worldwide in the month of July, most spam is seen to be in English, while 1 in every 20 spam messages, was in non-English.

    Global language of spam

    1. In Germany, 46.5% of all spam is in German and 2.5% in French.
    2. In The Netherlands, 25% of spam is in the Dutch language.
    3. In France, 53% is in French and 4% in German.
    4. In Japan, 62.3% of the spam is found to be in Oriental non-English languages.
    5. In China, 54.7% of the spam is found to be in Oriental non-English languages.

    Highlights from the report:

Spam – 89.4% in July (1% decrease since June)

Viruses – one in 295.2 emails in July contained malware (0.03% decrease since June)

Phishing – one in 327.6 emails comprised a phishing attack (0.05% decrease since June)

Malicious websites – 3,618 new sites blocked per day (88.5% increase since June)

Spam language localization – one in 20 emails is now non-English language

URL-shortened spam – accounting for as much as 6.2% of all spam

Fourth of July spam -– Waledac botnet attempts to benefit from US festivities

Spammers are using translation services and templates to easily develop multiple language spam runs, and web-based malware writers take a break as less than 1 %of web malware in July is new. Cyber-criminals continue to use world news and events to their advantage. People have simply been clicking on malicious links within an email and it adds that unsuspecting user to the Waledec botnet. Also, Michael Jackson’s death continues to get attention, from both fans and as well as fraudsters.

Top 6 Countries with the Highest Mobile Web Reach

People are already in a habit of connecting with friends and acquaintances through cell calls and text messages. Because of this, cell phones are a natural fit for social networks. A recent research study from Neilson Online tells us that social networks have the greatest mobile web reach in the UK and the US. In the UK, close to 2 million mobile web users visit a social network through their cell phone, while in the US, some 10.6 million people. Reports from end of 2008 indicate that these numbers have increased a great deal as compared to last year with 249% spike in the UK and 156% spike in the US.

Facebook is the world’s most popular social network via PCs, laptops, and even cell phones. Facebook is visited by every third person out of ten people online across the world.

Here is the list of top 6 countries with the highest mobile web reach:

    1. UK (22.7 %)

    2. US (19.2 %)

    3. France (12.3 %)

    4. Italy (10.6 %)

    5. Spain (10.6 %)

    6. Germany (6.6 %)

After the launch of the 3G iPhone, Facebook took over MySpace in mobile usage in the US. Almost 3 million cell phone users in the US were texting Facebook on a regular basis.

    What Makes Facebook Popular?

Recent reports suggest that Facebook has rapidly been gaining popularity to become the largest player on the global stage, and dominant in many countries. There has got to be something that it’s doing extremely well to have achieved such heights. So, let’s take a look at some of the areas where Facebook has gone “right”, and added to its rapid growth.

    1. Clean design

Reports from Neilson Online tell us that most people find Facebook to be well organized, simple and easy-to use. I personally found Facebook really confusing at first, till I eventually got used to it. Although opinions might vary, Orkut, in my books, is a lot simpler with a much easy-to-use interface.

    2. Privacy controls

Users have a much higher control over their content and account, and can manage who sees their content or not. Facebook has tailored its privacy controls based on 3 principles: Control, Simplicity and Connection.

    3. Little advertising clutter

Reports indicate that Facebook appeals to a larger audience because of less advertising compared to many of its competitors.

    4. Large demographic

Facebook has a broader appeal and is not limited to a particular demographic as such, like students or youth alone.

    5. Multi-purpose networking activities

Facebook focuses not just on entertainment but also connecting. Facebook is an all-in-one – Reunion, LinkedIn, Yahoo! Personals, Flickr and Twitter all put together.

    6. Creative architecture and features

Various applications, invites, requests and Facebook’s open architecture are some of the things that have led to a much higher visitor engagement.

    7. Media buzz

Facebook took off well from minute go due to the large free media coverage it received and still is till date.

Local offerings keep Facebook at bay in some countries:

Facebook has majorly come into global prominence in the last two years. However, there are countries where Facebook is yet to catch up. For instance:

    • In Germany, local player Wer-kennt-wen is twice as popular as Facebook.
    • In Japan, Mixi is around 27 times more popular than Facebook.
    • In Brazil, Orkut is 29 times more popular. Facebook barely exists in Brazil compared to Orkut – being visited by just over 2% of Brazilians online.
    • In China, because of a different culture, language and the regulatory issues of doing business, the US social networks aren’t dominant there. By the time the US networks arrived, local players such as Xiaonei; the portal QQ and 51.com had achieved dominance in key demographic groups.
    • In the US also, MySpace had established itself as an entertainment portal rather than just a pure social network. Although Facebook has taken over MySpace, but it still remains a huge player in the country.
