Gmail – Unread Mail Count in Favicon

You may be wondering, what am I talking about? Its just a silly thing which would help you work easily on Gmail. Using a Greasemonkey script developed by Lifehacker, you can easily view the total unread mails count in the favicon image of Gmail and it does not matter which page you are in – Drafts, sent items, Labels, starred, etc.

For those who don’t know what exactly favicon are, it is a tiny image used for easily recognizing a website, which can be seen behind the address bar. As you can see in the image here, the ‘Gmail Logo’ is the favicon for Gmail along with which the total unread mails count can be spotted.

So, if you are a Gmail addict like me, all I would say is just go and install this script. Also, before installing the script be sure that you are a firefox user with Greasemonkey installed in it. Oops!! I forgot to mention, as greasemonkey is only for firefox, the script can only be used in firefox. 😉

Google Apps ‘not free’ anymore?

Just now I noticed a Google ad that directed users to sign up for Google Apps and get 30 days free trail. And immediately after seeing the ad, I was wondering whether Google have removed the ‘free’ tag from its customized domains based application – Google Apps. Just after that, I followed the link on the ad wherein, as earlier, no comparison chart between standard edition and premier edition was available and by that time I was almost sure that Google Apps will not be free any more. 🙁

But, after having a sharp watch on each and every words, I found a link reading ‘Compare to Standard Edition’ that took me to the comparison chart I was talking about earlier in this post.

So guys do not panic, once you are landed on the comparison page, everything could be done as earlier and of course ‘for free’. 😉 Direct link to signup for standard edition is here.

Microsoft’s Windows 7 Leaked on the Internet!

The much talked, Microsoft’s upcoming release of a new operating system – Windows 7, whose beta release was scheduled to be launched on January 2009 is reported to have been leaked on some very famous torrent sites that usually provide pirated contents.

As per an article in Information Week:

The beta version of the OS, reportedly Windows 7, build 7000, can be downloaded from several infamous torrent sites often used to share pirated content.

Microsoft isn’t planning to officially release beta copies of Windows 7 until its MSDN developers’ conference in January. A final version of the OS isn’t expected until late 2009 or early 2010.

So, if you are looking to download the pirated copy of Windows 7 too, I would personally request you not to do so as these are pirated copies and you may have to end up facing legal complicacies. Moreover Windows may officially release this on January 09. So why should we end up downloading pirated copies?

Three IT Giants – Google, Apple & Microsoft Sued!

Sounds wired.. Isn’t it? But it is a fact that the three giants in IT field has been sued by a company named Cygnus who claims that these three companies have infringed to a patent originally held by it.

According to PcWorld:

It holds the patent on a common file preview feature used by browsers and operating systems to show users small snapshots of the files before they are opened.

The company, Cygnus, added that, its technology are being used in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Windows Vista, Apple’s Mac OS X and i-phone. Also, as of now only these three company are being sued, but there may be many other products as well, that may be using Cygnus’ technology without their permission.

According to reports, Google, Microsoft and Apple have not yet replied to the claims made by Cygnus. It would be interesting to know how these companies handle such a complicated situation.

Orkut Released New Year Theme!

Recently on the occasion of Christmas, Orkut launched a special theme for its users and it was the time I wanted a special and new theme to be used in the coming new year. And I was really happy to see the ‘New Year Theme’ go live. 🙂

Just now when I logged into my Orkut homepage, the top part of Orkut homepage read ‘Happy New Year’

When you click on the new year wishes, the page gets automatically diverted to ‘Themes’ section with a new year theme active on it. Here’s a snap-shot of it too.

If this new year theme is not yet rolled into your profile, then here is how it would look and feel after you activate it in your profile.

Hope, with this new year theme, you would have a better ‘Orkutting’ experience in the coming ‘New Year’ 😉

9 Year Old Indian become Microsoft’s Youngest Certified Professional!

Just came across an article in Gizmodo wherein the story of the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional was flashed. It is really great to know that a 9 Year Old girl who have achieved the status of ‘Youngest Microsoft Professional’ is an Indian. As per sources, to become Microsoft Professional, one has to appear a very hard and competitive exam conducted by Microsoft and this exam is usually taken up by highly qualified computer experts. But it is really a pride for our nation to know that, the exam which is hard to be passed out even by some experts is being cracked out by a 9 Year old south Indian Girl. 🙂

Seems this is a new year gift for our country and everyone residing here should feel proud of it.

(Serious) Bug in Google SMS Channel – Edit Any Channel But…

A serious bug is discovered in Google’s new SMS Channel service. Although the service is in beta (labs), it have huge userbase specially which makes a bug like this serious one.

First about the bug…

Bug is present in “manage channel” option beside each channel. When you click on it, editing page opens with URL structure like below:

http://labs.google.co.in/smschannels/manage_channel/xxxxxx/edit

In above link, xxxxxx is user-readable name of the channel.

Ideally you should be allowed to edit your own channels only, but you can put any Google SMS channels name in place of xxxxxx and you will get editing screen for it!

You will see a page like below. Yes, below one is Google SMS channel management page for top Indian technology blog – Digital Inspiration.

Don’t Get Panic…

I know above is enough to scare anyone who have large number of subscribers on their Google SMS channels. But although this bug is present, it can not be used to do any harm to anyone (at least as of now).

You will get access to edit page and you can change values too, but when you will hit Update Channel button you will get message, You have no permission to do this. (see screenshot below)

Ideally above error should have been displayed whenever we enter forged URL into browser.

“editing page options” do not contain any important information which can be misused. Everything there is anyway publicly listed in channel directory except data source. Again data source information for most of the channel is obvious.

So overall this bug is not harmful, but it presence may lead to more harmful bug in near future. Best would be, if Google SMS Channels team fix this in time! Thanks Saeed. 🙂

New Features in Windows Live Writer 2009

Approximately a week ago, the beta release of Windows Live Writer (WLW) 2009 was released. Since then, I wanted to upgrade my current version of WLW, but because of my scheduled life, I found Christmas holidays to be only opportunity to upgrade WLW and other applications of my system. 😉 After posting some topics, I found this upgrade worthy, and considered writing a review on it, here it goes.

The first change I noticed after upgrading to WLW 2009 was its new looks and interface.

Apart from this, another thing I liked on WLW 2009 as of now, was more border options to be used while inserting images. As you can see on the image here, new border options like Instant Photo, Reflection, Rounded corner, etc are being added into the existing options. Personally speaking, among all the border options, I liked ‘Rounded Corners’ the most. Also, as compared to the earlier version, there are more options for wrapping text around images. Apart from these, there are some minor changes and improvements, like image cropping & water-mark in WLW 2009 as far image insertion is concerned.

The tagging feature in WLW 2009 was appealing too. As you can view in the image, auto suggestions appears as you start typing a tag name. By this, similar tags will not be duplicated.
Now comes, browsing drafts and recently posted items. As you can see in the below screenshot, you can now easily search for pending items in drafts or in recently posted folder.

Apart from the above listed major changes in this upgrade of WLW, there are other many minor changes as well which are listed here:

  • Support for multiple photo insertion in a single go
  • Insert videos and automatically upload them into Youtube
  • Auto text linking
  • Spell check in many other languages
  • Image cropping, tilting, water-marking, etc.
  • Ability to search for Categories, posts in drafts and recently posted items.
  • Auto word count
  • Many great plugins included.

So what else are you looking for?? Unlike me, just go and update to Windows Live Writer 2009 as soon as possible. 🙂
