Last week, Vodafone announced to launch iPhone in India and 9 other countries. Looks like they will get stiff competition in Indian market as Bharti Airtel, in its Press release announced that they have signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to India, later this year.
Airtel is India’s one of top telecom services provider with 62 million mobile customers. Airtel users can expect iPhone around Diwali, an Indian Festival which comes around October-November.
One step ahead, India’s leading newspaper, Times Of India, confirmed both, Airtel as well as Vodafone deal. This mean iPhone user will have 2 choice as per telecom operator is concerned. This is slightly unexpected as in US, Apple gave distribution right to only one company AT&T. Also giant like Vodafone also expected to put similar conditions while signing deal with Apple.
But considering size of Indian telecom market, both operators can get large number of iPhone users. Personally I will switch to Vodafone, at the time of buying iPhone. I wonder with Airtel pathetic GPRS service, iPhone will be of any use!
Anyways, competition is always good for consumers!
It has been while, since team has technorati made it to news. Seems they noticed it too and now started indexing twitter pages. This means you can claim your twitter page like a normal blog on technorati.
Twitter indeed is a kind of micro-blogging, and so twitter pages on technorati will have authority, favorites, reactions and other stuff just like a normal blog.
Steps To Add Your Twitter Page To Technorati Account….
Once claimed you can add description and tags for your twitter blog. I don’t know how technorati will make use of tags added for twitter pages, as small tweets do not have facility to tag them.
Also as most links on twitter are shared via tinyurl, tweets about your blog posts will not help increase your blogs authority (technorati ranking).
Anyway there seem a rush on technorati to claim twitter pages, as I got following server error page when I first clicked “Begin Claim” button. But it worked just after refresh. 🙂
If you have noticed it, the navigation links are missing, so you can not check all search results. Shown below is screenshot of working navigation links…
Technical Stuff…
Problem is in CommMembers.aspx file which is responsible for navigating and searching community members. Also there seems small error in code, as navigation works with view all members options but it breaks only when you do a search on members list.
Since our exclusivecoverage of iPhonelaunch, I was constantly receiving mails about iPhones’ launch in India. As I promised in all replies, here is major update on the topic.
Vodafone bagged the deal with Apple to sell iPhone in Australia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. The final date is not declared yet but launch will be near the end of this year.
As per Indian market goes, which is second largest mobile market in the world with more than 261 million subscribers, this deal will be surely a major victory for Vodafone. Vodafone entered into Indian mobile market quite late considering their global presence. But with iPhone deal in the bag, they can hope to get return on their investment little earlier.

Unlocked iPhones are doing rounds in Indian grey market from few months. They cost around INR 20000 (~ $500). But I will strongly recommend you to wait for official launch than falling for grey market iPhones. As with Apple products, one really enjoys the support they give, of course that mean paying a little more, but its worth it!
Update: Another Indian telecom operator signed deal with Apple to bring iPhone in India. This will surely affect Vodafone Sales in India but as a consumer we will have more options. Details are here…
Strangely both communities are not visible into communities section on user profiles. That means such unjoined communities will not be visible to your friends. Thats good as far as privacy concerns, as there are lots of indecent communities on orkut which a decent orkut user will never like to join.
Coming back to the topic, is you noticed in above screenshot, then these extra communities are not joined yet. So you can’t unjoin them directly in order to remove from your communities page.
So first you have to join them and then only unjoin will work.
Technical Details…
The only place where strange communities has been seen is – communities page. This indicates community.aspx clearly have some bugs. Although not a sever one as of now, but who can predict a bug’s feature. So it will be better, if orkut team will correct this ASAP… 🙂
When I add a new friend to Gmail chat, sometimes my friend’s email address is added as their contact name, such as hikingfan@gmail.com. I personally like to have the name of all my chat friends in my chat list so I don’t get too confused as to who’s who. To change this, I used to go into contacts, select the contact profile, add the name of my friend, and then save it. (from official Gmail blog)
On a slightly different note, I was having similar problem. I have large number of gmail contacts from orkut. On orkut, people used profile name fields for status updates in past, before orkut launched status update feature. So I have their weird contact names in my gmail contact book.
As an example, as shown in following screenshot, the real name of my friend is tanvi while by default its set to “tan ban— New Yr IN GOA!!!!!!!!!!”
Now with this new feature, you can just click on names to edit them! Yes, its as easy as it sound. 🙂 (via official Gmail blog)
May 1, was RSS Awareness Day. I missed it as I was offline during last week. But its better late than never, so this post!
In old days people used to bookmark websites which they want to stay connected to. The process was, bookmark a site and then manually open it to check if website/page has been updated. I do still use bookmarks, but the purpose is only to note down important web pages. Updates must be tracked via formats like RSS. Its easier, simpler and fully automatic approach.
So what is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to deliver information from websites and pages that get updated regularly. An RSS document (which is called feed) contains either a summary or the full content from a website.
The main benefit of RSS is that it enables people to stay connected with their favorite websites without having to visit them. Once you subscribe to a particular RSS feed, you will automatically receive updates from the website that publishes the feed, whenever they release new content. (excerpt from rssday.org)

If a picture is worth 1000 words, then video must be worth a million words! And videos created by common craft team are surely worth a billion words. Here is video they created to explain RSS…
Still if you left with some doubt in your mind visit rssday.org and I bet you will learn what RSS is for sure! Also have a look at wikipedia entry on RSS.
So next time better looks for RSS feeds than bookmarking your favorite blogs/news sites. 🙂
In a smart move from orkut team, to reduce spam notifications you get in your mailbox, a new setting – Notification Filter is added to orkut’s existing settings.
With this setting you can choose to receive notifications from either:
everyone
friends of friends
friends
groups of friends
You can also configure filters individually for email notification, orkut message-box notification and orkut pop-up notification.
Although not strong as Gmail filters, these orkut filters can provides fine-grain control over existing orkut settings.
Still one major improvement many orkut users awaiting from long time is list of online friends. It will be great if small pop-up notification window on orkut blinks whenever a friend comes online. As of now such notifications are shown only when somebody scraps you on orkut.
Thanks to a new feature on orkut, now user can add comments on photos. As you can see in above screenshot, I have added a comment on my own photo. You can do this on any photo you have access to.
You can also check all comments on your photos by going to photo comments page. It has a nice format as shown below…
In every row on that page, first photo on which comment received is shown, next to it photo of commentator shown followed by actual comment.
Strangely there is no delete button besides comment. So if you receive any offensive comment you need to go to that photo page to delete it. Also there is no notification sent whenever a comment is posted on your photo. So it is strongly recommended for female users to keep a watch on photo comments page to avoid embarrassment.
This is another facebook like feature orkut team has given after status update feature.
