If you use a couple of cloud services, you’ll know the pain of managing files across them. I have some important files stored on my Dropbox account but I even have some documents on Google Docs, now here Otixo comes into the play and helps me in managing those files.

To keep it simple, Otixo is like Windows explorer for your files on the cloud!

otixo 2

  • Double-click on Add network place.

otixo 3

For Windows 7 Users – Otixo has a tutorial on how to map the network drive on Windows 7.

The Big Question

The war between cloud services is getting hotter day by day, and now even Apple introduced its so called iCloud. The question is, will these cloud services allow Otixo to grow? Let’s take example of Dropbox, as it’s one of the cloud service supported by Otixo, it is indirectly supporting other cloud services (Box, Google Docs etc)!

I know, only time can answer this one.

Wuala : A Better Alternative to Dropbox

wuala_logo-SIMPLE

Cloud services are getting popular day by day, after all it’s the best way to backup, share and sync files. No doubt, Dropbox is a great way to backup and store your files on the cloud, but have you ever thought of an alternative? May be you haven’t, but Wuala is a good alternative when compared to Dropbox.

Security

After the Last Pass security has compromised, many people came to know about the danger of storing files on the cloud and I suppose this can happen with even Dropbox! But I bet this won’t happen with Wuala.  Files stored on Wuala are not available through its website, so chances of getting your files compromised are almost nil!

There are only two ways to access your files stored on Wuala, one is through the desktop app, second one is through the java app available on its website.

Free Cloud Storage

Wuala by default offers just 1GB of cloud storage, that might sound pretty less as Dropbox offers 2GB of free storage at the beginning (although they are some tasks that are to finished).

wuala 1

Like Dropbox you can always refer Wuala to your friends and gain free space up to 3GB. For people interested in paying for storage for premium needs, I found that Wuala plans are actually cheaper than Dropbox.

Uploading and Downloading Speed

Can’t comment on uploading speed, but Downloading speed is much better than Dropbox, reason is each file you upload to Wuala server has five similar copies of it, so Wuala downloads the file from five locations simultaneously and thus better speed (same technique is used by download managers). 😉

Collaboration

This awesome feature is completely missing in Dropbox. If you and a group of friends are working on a document (provided, all have Wuala installed on their machine) then with Wuala’s Collaboration feature you can edit the file and thus appear the same in your friend’s computer (just like Google Docs). You can notify your friends of the changes you made through the comments.

With Dropbox, the file cannot be worked on by two people at the same time but can be accessed by a group.

Local Cache

wuala 2

When you download a file or a folder in Wuala, it stores Download cache in its folder and this increases with time and thus can consume most of your disk space. Unlike Dropbox, in which cache folder is hidden, in Wuala you clear Download cache from the settings window.

Wuala in Action

Like Dropbox, Wuala supports many devices including Android, iOS, Windows, Linux and Mac.

I have migrated from Dropbox to Wuala, will you? Drop in your opinions!

Insta7 – Mobile App for Faster Browsing on GPRS/3G

Insta7_logoI recently came across a mobile application called Insta7 and found it quite useful for mobile users in India. The mobile app, shows the latest news updates, cricket scores and even latest flight status updates.

Insta7 Features

  • While using mobile phones, there are many apps and websites we browse from the phone browser. This can actually make browsing on the internet a little tedious. With useful links and information, organized in its layout under specific categories, Insta7 makes browsing a lot faster.

insta7_layout

  • The service can be looked up by downloading their app or by simply visiting http://insta7.com from the mobile browser.
  • The app works fine with almost every mobile phone. It works with GPRS (2G), 3G and WiFi connection.

Insta7 makes sense for GPRS users

In India, we do not have wide availability of 3G and WiFi spots are also not very common. This means we have to end up using the slower GPRS connection to browse on our mobile phones.

Insta7 makes it a lot easier for GPRS users to quickly browse instead of waiting for individual apps or websites to load up.

Search Engine to get Pin Code of Addresses in India

Finding address is a very easy task thanks to the several mapping websites. Even in India, to get addresses and directions to a particular place is usually very easy. But, what stumps me most times, is that I usually do not know the pin code of a particular place.

For example, I often take down the correct address to send a courier to my relatives but forget to ask for the pin code.

Get Pincode Info is a nice search service which displays the pin code of a place you enter.

getpincode_india

As you can see in the image above, I typed in the address or locality and city. This was enough for it to search for the pin code and display it. It also shows some related links from the web about that address or locality the user has entered.

The best part is we can edit the pin code with an enter an HTML link as reference.

Next time you are stuck for a pin code of a place, use Get Pincode India for a quick remedy.

Online Tool to Resize Images Within Seconds!

Resizr_logoWorking online has its advantages and disadvantages. Advantage is obviously the timings and location. You do not really need an office or a desk. You can work from anywhere as long as you can access the internet.

That said, there are issues that crop up while working on different computers. One issue I always come across when using a different computer is image resizing. This means, I might have to install a new software on the computer and that is not feasible in an interne cafe or on a friend’s computer.

ResizR helps with resizing images on the fly, with free online tool.

ResizR features

Resizr_image_online_tool

  • ResizR allows users to upload their images online or use an image from the web.
  • This image can then be resized by controlling the image width. This resizes the image which then can be downloaded or shared from the image URL.
  • Apart from resizing, it also allows the images to be rotated.
  • The best part is the online tool does not need users to register or create accounts.

I can use a different computer, not download any software and still manage to resize and rotate images. 🙂

Do try out ResizR and drop in your comments.

Use Multiple Search Engines Simultaneously [Searchr]

When I search for images for my blog posts in Google images, I might not find the desired image. Then, I will try searching on Flickr, if I can not find it there, then I would search in another image-based search engine and the hunt continues.

This consumes a lot of time and sometimes I wish there was a search engine which shows results from all the top search engines at one place, so we don’t need to switch between different search engines.

If you’re like me then Searchr might work like a charm for you as it does the same i.e. showing up results from the top search engines.

Six types of searches can be done on Searchr, they are Web, Images, Torrents, Videos, Files and Mp3 Downloads.

search 5

Searchr Features

  1. Web search: You can get search results from the top 7 search engines namely Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Ask, Wikipedia, Dogpile and Yippy. It misses Altavista which is better than Yippy
  2. Image search: All in all, there are seven image-based search engines, the major drawback here is that, it misses Flickr. Iconfinder is great addition as you can find icons of all types and sizes in it.
  3. Video search: The videos section is a bit buggy, as the YouTube video results doesn’t load up. Dailymotion and Metacafe could’ve been added instead of AOL videos.
  4. Torrent search: It lists the major Torrent search engines like isoHunt, BtJunkie etc.
  5. File search: Uses Google’s site: syntax to search for files in popular file hosts like Rapidshare, Hotfile, Megaupload etc.

So, have you tried Searchr? How is it? Drop in your opinions!

Askives – A Search Engine to Get Straight Answers!

Most search engines spew out results in the form of links to other pages which they have indexed. The results depend on the keywords used to search for information. For example if you are searching for who directed a famous movie, chances are we come across a Wikipedia or IMDB link for the movie and then get the information, after click on the links.

Askives, gives direct answers to questions asked without just pointing to useful links.

Askives_search_engine

Features of Askives

  • The search engine prefers questions asked in form of How, What, Why, Who and why? These questions are typically like the example : How big is an Acre.
  • The answer is direct – which is the straight answer. It also then shows possible answers along with links.
  • It also has a section of resources and related questions which can help you out a lot if you are trying to look into something deeply.
  • Users can share the answers on Facebook or tweet about it.

I liked the search service for it’s simple way of answering questions and not just pointing to relevant links in form of results. I surely think Askives cannot be another Google, but a browser add-on will be very useful.

Choose and Add Web Apps for Your PC with ALOT Toolbar

Web apps have changed a lot with more and more people using add-ons instead of toolbars. This is mainly because most toolbars are limited in its scope and add-on allow a variety of functions from managing Facebook, Twitter and even your email accounts.

ALOT Toolbar allows sharing links, searching for content and looking up social networking accounts by allowing adding specific apps to it.

Alot_apps _for_pc

Features of ALOT toolbar

  • The ALOT Toolbar will work with your Internet Explorer and Firefox browser. This leaves out Chrome users which is a bit of a disappointment.
  • I could look up Facebook, BBC News, even Wikipedia articles from the toolbar itself.
  • Just click on the add app button on your browser and we can customize the apps that are present in your toolbar.

Usually I do not like toolbars, but I recommend using ALOT toolbars simply for the sheer number of apps available with it. Do drop in your comments.
