Troubleshooting: Mouse pointer moving erratically in Linux!

If you are trying new distribution/version of Linux and founds mouse pointer is moving erratically at the time of installation or after installation then I think its time to scream eureka!

I got this problem while installing Fedora Core 4! While I searched exhaustively I ended up with no good and feasible solution! After long time I got same problem while installing OpenSuse 10.2 but this time I got solution there itself!

The key is to use boot option

psmouse.proto=bare

If you are getting this problem during installation then instead of starting normal installation type above at shell and just hit enter!

If you have already installed Linux and getting this problem, then edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file. It will have alongwith many lines one or more line(s) containing something like follows:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.2-34-default root=/dev/hda11

Note that the non-highlighted text in above line may slightly differ!
Once u find the line(s) like above add psmouse.proto=bare at the end of them! So final line may look like…

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.2-34-default root=/dev/hda11 psmouse.proto=bare

Just save the file and reboot Linux!

Hot Tip: U can also edit /boot/grub/menu.lst from windows if u have windows on same machine by accessing Linux files from windows!

Solution: Accessing Linux files (partitions) from Windows!

While mounting windows partition in linux is a common thing, vice-versa is not easy as Microsoft does not provide support for other operating systems’ filesystem! But poor guy (Bill) can’t stop us from getting what we want!

So here comes solution in the form of an Installable FileSystem Driver! Hey guys don’t fade-up listing word driver! Its simplest program to install (simpler than installing winamp!)

Key Feature:

  • Provide support for both ext2 & ext3 filesystem.
  • Provides read as well as write support.
  • Windows page-file too can be transferred on Linux partition.

Procedure:

  1. Click here to download latest version of the driver. (size ~ 460 KB)
  2. An exe file will be loaded to ur hard-drive.
  3. Start installation (it will take just 2-3 clicks).
  4. It will show a wizard like follows! Just assign some drive letter(s) to Linux partition(s).

Tip: Assign drive letters like X:, Y:, Z: to avoid confusion between windows partitions and Linux partitions!

Orkut: Sending Mail to urself! ‘save as draft’ feature!

This is really useless trick… 😀

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Get its url. It MUST look like http://www.orkut.com/Profile.aspx?uid=
  3. Then copy the above same no & go to this url! http://www.orkut.com/compose.aspx?uid=
  4. OR u can just replace profile with compose.
  5. Thats it! Wwith this url, u can send message to urself!

This can be used to ‘save as draft’!

Windows: Controlling Process Priority to speed-up your favorite program!

Here are steps to increase or decrease the priority of any process on Windows XP/2000 machine!

  1. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC or CTRL+ALT+DEL
  2. Go to the second tab called Processes, right click on one of the active processes, you will see the Set Priority option. (as shown in following screenshot.)
  3. Default is normal, change it to…
    • AboveNormal, High, Realtime to increase process priority OR
    • BelowNormal, Low to decrease process priority!

FAQ:
Q. Why I need this?
Ans: When multiple programs are running, there may be few dear programs. Like some anti-virus scanning is running along with some movie, you will get smooth decoding of movie by increasing its process priority and/or decreasing process priority of antivirus.

Note: If only a single program is running then it may not get benefit from changing priority!

Finding IP of MSN, Yahoo users!

MSN is routes the connection through a microsoft server while you are chatting. However, when a file is sent, a DCC (direct connection) is created. This was purposely done because otherwise microsoft would waste alot of bandwidth so a direct connection is made. This is your chance.

Start a file transfer between u and ur target (preferably send large file), open up your command prompt (run “cmd” in NT/XP or “command” in 9X to get into prompt) and run netstat.
Usually the MSN targets IP would be above port 2000!

If u recieve some crap like rb286.primsn.com as the target, do a reverse DNS lookup on it. However, this occurs very rarely, mostly u will recieve a clear IP!

You can use similar trick to find IP address of Yahoo users!

Now to protect yourself against this, you can use a proxy server.

Finding Email Id of any Orkut user! GoogleTalk trick!

Well here comes another orkut hack by jerry to find email id of any orkut profile. Note that old trick to send friend request to view their email id on friends page is not working any more!Only thing it works for only orkut members who simultaneously use GoogleTalk. By GoogleTalk I mean you need to have GoogleTalk installed!

Here is the trick…

  1. Go to any members profile who is not your friend. (Because you can always view your friends email id by going to friends page!)
  2. Select ignore user option which is on left side.
  3. Now log into GoogleTalk and go to Settings >> Blocked.
  4. You will get all ignored peoples name and email id there!

Hide your orkut profile name again!
