[Apple iPad 2] It’s Official! Tablets are here to stay

A few hours ago Apple unveiled iPad 2. It was expected to show-off a iPad gadget with a camera and many more features. iPad 2 addresses a lot of issues which its predecessor had. Apple had reinvented a new market with iPad and made a splash in the tablet computer market. The share of Apple in this category is almost totally dominant and this is because of the instant recognition of iPad with the tablet.

The event was a success and even Steve Jobs put in an appearance at the presentation. This must have delighted Apple fans and investors who were probably worried about some health rumours about Jobs. Steve Jobs is on leave of absence for health reason.

One thing that Apple has proven over the last year is that the tablets are here to stay and it is no longer a niche market.

What’s new with iPad 2!

  • Apple has not gone for a radical change to the design and kept the screen the same size. They have though made iPad 2 thinner and lighter than the previous version.
  • iPad 2 as expected will have 2 cameras for video chatting and also HD video recording.
  • It has a powerful A5 dual core chip which does make it quite a powerful piece of hardware for a tablet.
  • The interesting part is that the battery life stays the same at 10 hours. This is quite an achievement considering all the hardware changes with 2 cameras.

The future of Tablet devices!

Its true that tablet computer gadgets have been around for a long time but before the iPad was released it had a very small niche market. The tablet was not considered mainstream technological device. This is something that Apple has changed and the fact that competitors are jumping on the tablet bandwagon only proves that the tablet computers are now mainstream products and are here to stay. This is quite incredible as only about a year ago, the tablet computer market was small and insignificant.

Apple does the impossible with MacBook Pro!

I did make a fuss about it and finally it happened. I am talking about the MacBook Pros launch which finally happened on 24th February and just as the rumor said, 5 models in three categories: 13”, 15” and 17” are launched.

I did go through the technical sheet for each of them and found that while there are 2 sub-models each under 13” and the 15” models, the 17” model is unique. Each of them gives you 7 hours of un-interrupted battery even while wireless web surfing. I think writing anything about “Unibody” would not be justified, so I am including this video below.

Apple’s unibody video

Let me give you a brief idea about each of these models, after which I will explain you the wonder Apple has done this time!

13” MacBook Pro

(The cheapest sub-model available)

  • Processor: 2.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 / 3MB L3 cache
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics [384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared]
  • Memory: 4GB RAM, 320GB Hard-drive

15” MacBook Pro

(The cheapest sub-model available in this range)

  • Processor: 2.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 / 6MB L3 cache
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics [384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared]. Additionally, AMD Radeon HD [256MB GDDR5 memory]
  • Memory: 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard-drive

17” MacBook Pro

  • Processor: 2.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 / 6MB L3 cache
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics [384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared]. Additionally, AMD Radeon HD [1GB GDDR5 memory]
  • Memory: 4GB RAM, 750GB Hard-drive

Just look above at the text I have marked in bold, you will see AMD alongwith Intel in Graphics section. Apple has done the magic of bringing together two parallel technologies with automatic graphics switching. Though I myself own a PC, I have started falling in love with Apple, no doubt even you deserve to fall for it 😉

Apple iWork ‘11 may launch on 2nd March!

Apple on a launching spree [check MacBook Pros & iPad 2], and a frustrated Microsoft puts up a comparison page on it’s official website. But Apple still did not officially announce the release date for it’s answer to Microsoft Office 2011.

I believe it had to release somewhere by February this year, and to be more specific, 19th February 2011 as suggested here. However the date has passed with rumors failing to intercept Apple’s intentions and now the rumors are growing about 2 March, 2011.

Though many users have already started using the Office 2011 released by Microsoft in October last year, however many are still waiting for Apple’s iWork ‘11 to set footprints to upgrade from iWork ‘09 released in January 2010. Apple will even offer  Pages, Numbers and Keynote software (similar to Word, Excel and PowerPoint) even individually to users.

What is your opinion about this tussle between Microsoft & Apple? Do you think Mac’ lovers will go for Microsoft Office or will be patient enough for iWork to set its début? Do share your thoughts.

Apple’s mobile app market share dips!

Yet the deal between Nokia and Microsoft is not in force and what you see above is mere a transition which has happened without this new couple participating. Apple has successfully maintained it’s dominance in the Mobile App sales in the last year i.e. 2010 and has even registered a growth of 131.9% over the sales in 2009. However the moment you start comparing this growth with the other Mobile app sellers (Blackberry, Nokia Ovi and Android), few eyebrows would raise.

Why did Apple’s growth slow down?

One of the major factors of the slow down is the rapid growth in Android phone sales. While Android app sales has grown by more than 850% in just one year, even Nokia has managed to grow by about 720%. Another reason is that Apple’s mobile apps being sold since long and hence there is now a concentration in the market, resulting in lower demand.

Can we conclude that Apple has starting losing it out, or will this prepare Apple better for the upcoming years? However the revenues have doubled over a year, hence Apple apps collectively do not looks like doing bad. Let me know what are your views and do post your comments!

Hilarious Spoof Website takes on Apple Inc

I bumped on to a shareable today which was a picture of an imaginary product that Apple Inc could possibly develop in the near future called Water. 😀

Here’s the picture for all you readers. Click to enlarge.

I read the line at the bottom of the picture as many of you might have, and went straight to scoopertino.com to check it out, and was not disappointed one little bit :D.

Scoopertino is one of the funniest fake news sites I’ve come across in a while. You’ll find tons of fake Apple news that would really make you laugh out loud!

Here’s another article I read on Scoopertino which claims that Apple recently opened a theme park for its fans which drew nearly a million visitors in the first week itself. 😀

Here are some of the rides in the Apple theme park –

“AAPLcoaster: This high-tech roller coaster literally reconfigures itself second by second, mimicking Apple’s stock performance in real time. Feel the adrenaline rush as your nest egg soars to new heights, plummets to the ground, then rockets skyward once again. (Not recommended for pregnant women or investors with heart conditions.)”

“Android Attack! Strap yourself into a sleek, weaponized, iPhone-style race car and put the pedal to the metal. It’s a life-or-death dash to the finish line with hundreds of vicious Androids nipping at your butt. Careful! For every Android you kill, two new ones take its place.”

This website is a definite treat for all Apple fans as well Apple haters 🙂

Steve Jobs sick leave takes toll on Apple’s health

When someone utters the word “Apple” most times you think of the name “Steve Jobs”. The Apple CEO – Steve Jobs has a brand value which is synonymous with Apple. Apple has been smart to push Steve Jobs as their main spokesperson because Steve Jobs is a name everyone trusts and there is also the ‘Wow’ factor attached to him. Steve Jobs has been called a visionary and a creative genius. A couple of days ago Steve Jobs decided to take a leave of absence to deal with health issues. He had done this before in 2009 to get a liver transplant.

The immediate effect on Apple was seen on its stocks. They fell over 5% in one trading day. The fall was probably not as dramatic as imagined before, probably because the announcement of Steve Jobs taking a leave was done on Monday when the markets in the U.S were closed.

5 day chart of Apple stocks on Nasdaq

Will Apple keep innovating with Jobs on leave?

The main question is not about Apple’s stocks but it’s vision. Apple in that way is a one man show when it comes to showing vision. Apple does have its top executives and programming heads giving lectures or giving demos about their products. It is all done by Steve Jobs. If Steve Jobs is not with Apple,  will it survive?

The next few months will see Apple unveiling iPad 2 and other products. This will give us a good idea on how well Apple copes without Steve Jobs’ creative genius.

At the moment it looks like Apple health will be also tied to the health of its CEO Steve Jobs.
