11 Styles/ Themes for Orkut!

Important Update: Orkut launched theme feature officially now. (Read More…)

More than a year ago we have published collection of Orkut skins! That is still our one of the best post!

It used GreaseMonkey scripts to change the look of the orkut. Then around 8 months back we wrote about GreaseMonkeys cousin extension – UserStyles which is specially designed for changing looks of a site at client side i.e. CSS! It was cool but at that time there was not any complete ready-to-use style there! But over the time there are lots of styles now and today we are listing them!

Orkut Planning for Major makeover! Adding Photo Upload Support to scrapbook!

Last week we started discussion – Why Orkut removed user pics from its homepage Logo???

It seems Orkut heard about our conversation (i know its stupid 2 imagine… lolz) and confirmed that they are coming with a new look! This turn out Pramod Ghuge prediction to be true as he said in his comment on above discussion,

Orkut is gearing up for a new look and great new features
it is not a coincidence that new logo was unveiled at the same time that most users can send rich content scraps (images, flash, html)so definitely Orkut want to make the public feel like its newer and better!

Well we have more! Although Orkut said the new look will take time to reach all users we managed to capture few screenshots of one such feature. The feature will allow you to upload pics directly to the orkut scrapbook!

Look for “add photo” link in scrapbook. It is below the textbox for writing scraps. You can also check following screenshot.

Now once u click on the link you will get a wizard as shown in following screenshot… (click on image to enlarge it)

No we have not yet got new looks of orkut!

If you have noticed in above screenshot there is only cancel button on screen which is also not working yet! Forget about OK or Upload button!

By the way you can still send images, videos and other content in scrapbook!

Mutual Communities – Know how alike you and your friends are! Orkut Dating Tips!

After reading a persons profile on orkut the next place to look for more information about a person is his/her community list!

The more no. of community a person joins more predictable he/she becomes as people join communities out of interest (or hate)! So information like favorite disc, schools, actors, music, etc can be easily recovered from communities!

But when you bumped into a profile with 200 or more community its hard to analyze and go through all! Next best thing could be if somehow you can figure out mutual communities i.e. common to just two if you! Well today this best thing has happened!

Now how to use this as a dating tip…

  • First go to a persons profile you think could be a nice date…
  • Next click on view communities button in bottom-left side!
  • Next go to mutual communities!
  • Now if larger the no. of common communities you have, higher is the probability that you and this person have similar interest!

One thing orkut could do to make this better is showing mutual communities on profile page itself like they show mutual friends!

Orkut becomes Indian Youth Icon for 2007!

Just read on Orkuts official blog that Orkut becomes Indian Youth Icon for 2007!

The competition was organized by MTV & Pepsi!

Orkut now joined the league of Mahendra Singh Dhoni (in 2006), Shah Rukh Khan (in 2005), Rahul Dravid (in 2004) and Anil Ambani (in 2003) as the winners of Pepsi-MTV Youth Icon.

The other nominee for 2007 Youth Icon were Abhishek Bachchan (Actor), Rang De Basanti (Movie), Multimedia Cellphones and You(th) itself! You can check out the result here!

Why Orkut removed user pics from its homepage Logo!

Just noticed orkut has changed its homepage drastically!

At first a funny thought came to my mind! I felt the logo might be temporarily changed for India. As Orkut featured Indian logo 2 days back I thought the original is lost somewhere so this temporary arrangement (see following screenshot)! Lolz!

But I checked from various proxies and the logo is same everywhere! If you fail to remember, let me show you old orkut logo featuring 10 faces! (thanks Google Cache)

It would not be surprise if these faces have been changed but orkut removed all faces! And I failed to figure out why???

So everybody out there… Let us know if you can figure out some answer! 🙂

Orkut Message Cleaner Script!

Long Long time ago… some of my orkut friends requested me to write a greasemonkey script to clean orkut message box!

If your message box has been flooded with 1000’s of messages, most of them are junk you would like to clean them all at once as most of us gets our imortant mails on services like gmail, yahoo, hotmail and others!

Enough chit-chat, lets clean it once…

# To use…

  • Just go to your orkut message box and your messages will start to delete automatically!

If you have something like 10000 message and a slow internet connection it may take considerable time! Otherwise it should be matter of a minute or two atmost!

By the way you can speedup this considerably by using ImgLikeOpera extension!

Orkut is concerned about about your security. Started showing security tips!

Recently Orkut started showing security tips like above on scrapbook pages. Considering large no. of users Orkut have and most of them are not computer geeks, this is good move I must say!

The reason for writing this is if you are not so much into computers or for some other reasons these tricks confuses you, please feel free to ask for help/explanation here. I guess we will be fast at replying compare to Orkut support team.

By the way if you are also concern about these security tips, then you may want to read them all together. Unfortunately Orkut as of now have no page covering all security tips. In fact they should create such a page and provide link to it saying more or read more. (like in following screenshot)

Anyway we will try to enlist them here. If you find any new tip please let us know so we can upgrade this list!

  1. Never check “remember me” when you’re on a shared computer.
  2. Scan your computer regularly for viruses, spyware, and adware.
  3. Don’t click on links in emails that claim to be from Orkut or Gmail.
  4. Never paste a URL or script into your browser while logged into Orkut.com, no matter what it claims to do.
  5. Never enter your Google Account login and password on sites other than orkut.com and other Google properties.

Why Orkut is NOT celebrating Pakistan’s Independence day???

Just few hours back I have posted how Orkut is celebrating Indias 60 Years of Independence!
Then I received comment from Lovedeep on that post saying Orkut Logo featuring Indian tricolor looking great!

And I wondered how Orkut Logo is featured in Pakistan as Pakistan also completing 60 Years of Independence day on 14th August, 2007.

So I decided to use a proxy for Pakistan – www.orkut.pk and shocked to see normal orkut logo!

Curiously I contacted Orkut Team asking,

wat about pakistan???
they r also having their 60th independence day!

and they replied with this….

Thank you for your feedback. We would love to hear from you via email too! orkut-users@google.com

Why this biasness??? Is this Independence Day celebration is professional move from orkut without any real spirit? Even if the answer is yes, isn’t Pakistan matters for orkut atleast professionally??

Anybody out there can answer this???

Orkut Updates – Add Colors, Images, Videos, Podcasts, Audio and other HTML formatting in scraps!

This is one of the most searched orkut hack as I remember! My posts – Sending Images in Scraps & Put Running Text In Scrap – on this topics still receive hits from search engines!

So why I am writing today about outdated posts?? Or are these hacks working again?

Yes, these hacks are officially working so lets call them features! And they are so many that we can enlist them as follows…

  • Adding images
    Copy and paste urls ending in .jpg, .gif, .png or .bmp and the image will appear in the scrap.
    for example, http://example.com/example.jpg

  • Adding videos from YouTube and Google Video
    Copy and paste the url and the video will appear in the scrap.
    for example, http://youtube.com/watch?v=videoid
  • Adding podcast/audio
    Copy and paste the url of an audio file and an audio player will appear in the scrap.
    for example, http://example.com/example.mp3
  • Adding html-embeddable objects
    Create or upload your content at sites such as photobucket.com, imageshack.com, rockyou.com or slide.com. Copy and paste the html embed code to share it with your friends.

There is one catch to this new feature!

You can use these smart features while sending scraps to your friends!

Also as all of above contains atleast one URL, that means you have to encounter image verification which is kinda annoying! 🙁

Finally… Dont get panic if this feature is not working for you as this feature is added to new profiles first! So if you are senior citizen on orkut (like me) you may have to wait for few days before you will be able to use this cool feature! 🙂
