New Theme for Devils Workshop!

Update: We offer professional WordPress Theme designing service now! Check it out! 🙂

If you have visited Devils Workshop from your web browser in last 18 hours, you may have noticed new theme by now.

As expected, I received mix response for theme. But before analyzing them, I would like to highlight some points which were on my mind while working on new theme.

First thing, I was so sure about was simplicity and performance. So this theme have just 1 image as its part! Next as Devils Workshop is more than 2 years old now, I wanted to come up with navigation which will be easy, relevant and contextual in nature.

It took me around 6 months to finalize things which you can see now. Here are some details which may go unnoticed…

Navigation…

  • Home Page: Rather than blindly listing 10 recent posts, Homepage will now have at the top “Featured post” section, the most important one. Next a user can have a look at “New (recent)” and “Best” content simultaneously. Scrolling further, one can check in decreasing order of importance posts marked for Social Networking users, Bloggers, Internet & Technology. At each level, tabbed-navigation is provided to show most popular relevant subcategories.
  • Single Post Page: Most of the users visits single post pages via search engines. So it is very important to show them “best” and “relevant” content. Now just after the post, one can see, “Related”, “Most Popular” and “Recent” Posts in single place, again using tabbed-navigation. Tabbed-navigation really make use of screen-space efficiently. It also hides unnecessary information as per user-choice and saves a lot of scrolling.
  • Archive Pages: Similar “tabbed-navigation” is used in archive pages but with relevance. For example, if you are visiting a monthly archive, you will be most popular posts in default tab. If you are visiting a category page, you will see most popular posts in that category in default tab. A visitor will always get “local view”. This is sort of tracking user activity without any cookies or privacy concerns. 😉

Aesthetics…

  • Colors: Theme uses 2-shades of blue, 1 shade of gray with default white background and black text-color for main (post) contents. There is no images, no-rounded corner and other so-called “web 2.0” stuff.
  • No First Impression Philosophy: I do agree that first impression lasts longer. But hate it or love it, Google will force you to visit Devils Workshop again and again. So its better to go for minimalistic design, where you can spend more time on reading articles, without putting strain on your eyes.
  • Many old readers are disappointed with new designs aesthetics. But I really think you will soon adapt to new theme soon. When wordpress changed its admin interface in version 2.5, I hated it, because I had my own comfort-zone with old theme. But now I am comfortable with new theme as well.

Designed for Multi-author…

  • Every single post and archive page will have authors avatar beside it. Also author comments are highlighted on their posts.
  • A dedicated introductory paragraph “About Devil”, from bottom part is replaced by contributors list. Also article count beside author name is removed. Some said it should be put back. Again your opinion is waited on this.

This theme is made using so many things, that permanently carrying there names in footer will clutter it. Still here is my vote of thanks to…

Thanks to Anil, Deepesh, Johnson, Gaurav, Gautam, SauravjitDeepak, Debjyoti and Manpreet. These guys spent their time and energy to improve this theme when it was under-construction.

Here are some valuable comments/questions…

Arjun suggested a separate “recent post” widget in sidebar. I guess one after the post in tabbed-navigation box is enough.

Pavan reported a bug in Firefox 2.0 which was almost distorting all comments, including comment form. Thanks Pavan for quick reporting and attaching screenshot in your mail. I made some changes now, and tested it on Firefox 2 from Windows XP machine. I hope its fixed by now for all. If you see any problem with theme, please let us know. Also include your browser information in it.

Feedback Please…

This is my first wordpress theme from almost scratch. As Johnson suggested, I should have posted about all issues/codes used in theme. Bit in 6 months time, I have gone through more than 500 wordpress themes, and have 200+ bookmarked resources, tutorials on wordpress and in-general CSS. So putting all efforts at one-place is quite hard.

Still if you like something particular and want more detail about it, please let me know. I would love to post about any part of this theme. I am working on few more themes so your feedback can help me make them better as well.

Thank you all for your time and valuable feedback.

Enjoy new Devils Workshop… 🙂

We are hiring…

After struggling for more than a month, I failed to keep pace with growing workload. So I have decided to formalize everything and soon Devils Workshop will be part of rtCamp, an unconventional company I always dreamt of.

About rtCamp…

rtCamp stands for Round Table Camp. Round Table, as its name suggests, has no head, inferring that everyone who sits there have equal status(wikipedia). Camp is from spirit of various BarCamp, BlogCamp and PHPCamp I have attended over last 2 years.

So at rtCamp, our goal is to create a work-culture where you will never feel like you are working in some company, rather if someone calls you when you are at rtCamp and asks where are you, your reply will be, “I am at Camp!”

More about rtCamp will become available on rtCamp’s site itself, very soon…

What we are working on…

  • Web Development: PHP projects are our favorite. We also code sites with AJAX. As of now we do not offer .NET services, but in near future if demanded will do that as well.
  • WordPress: We offer custom WordPress plugins development and standard WordPress services like integration with forums, SEO, etc. Theme development projects are on the cards.
  • Social Networking: OpenSocial and Facebook Apps are under-development. We help our clients integrate their products/services with various famous social networks. We are also planning to develop some useful and free apps for our reader community.
  • Blog Networks: More than 20 blogs will be launched in 6 months on different topics. Our bloggers will have full freedom and control over revenue model. They can get direct revenue from AdSense which is on, or can opt in for salary model.
  • Products: Our first web-based product expected to hit market within a month. It will be a premium service targetting corporate world.

What are we looking for…

Although we have listed many things, in the initial phase we are looking for PHP Programmers/Web Developers.

Your Posts, Your AdSense Ads! Our New Revenue Sharing Program

Almost a year ago I opened Devils Workshop for guest authors as well as co-authors. Now its time to take this initiative to the next level with our new revenue sharing program, which will allow all authors to display Google AdSense content ad unit all of their posts.

What makes this revenue sharing program unique is that ONLY your Adsense content unit will be shown on your posts. In fact if you are irregular blogger or don’t want to go through hassle of maintaining your own blog, then you can earn much more through this revenue sharing program as every post you publish here will be read by large reader community.

Also if you are a niche blogger then you can use Devils Workshop as a platform to publish your off-topic articles. As an example, lets assume you have a dedicated blog about Google but you recently discovered something really cool which is not at all related to Google, rather than tipping off another blogger you can publish it here by yourself.

If you like to know more about it, please read this. If you have registered previously, use this guide to configure your AdSense ads.

Series Writing – A new blogging experiment! [Editorial]

Starting from this week, I am trying a new experiment – Series writing.

Series writing is proven effective for many top bloggers. It demands much more consistency than normal blogging but I have more reasons to try this. In last few weeks, I have noticed that I blog about too many topics here. As a consequence, I waste a lot of time deciding what topic to write on.

Personally, I am into many things like blogging, web design, wordpress development, site administration, computer security, SEO, freelancing, etc. So it was always harder for me to choose a niche. So I have decided to take one topic at a time exclusively to blog about.

Of course, I will keep you updated on Orkut, iPhone and other my favorite topics which I closely monitor over the Internet. Series writing doesn’t mean you just blog on one topic. It just means you blog more on a particular topic.

This week I will be posting more on WordPress plugins. This series is intended to help new wordpress bloggers gain most from from countless wordpress plugins.

In my first series, I will post about plugin usability, my favorite wordpress plugins and similar things which can help you as a wordpress user.

If all goes well, I will also write a wordpress plugin series for developers. Yes, I am into commercial wordpress development and I just got paid $300 for my first private wordpress plugin. (project link)

Next I have really great series almost complete on Google Adsense but I will put it live in September once AdSense for product referral retires. I am also planning to cover series on online money-making, SEO, security, etc.

Please let me know if you like to read more about a particular topic. I hope you will enjoy this new experiment.

First post will be live in few hours. Thank you all… 🙂

Bill Gates Leaving Microsoft Today on June 27 [Farewell]

image Today, Friday, June 27, 2008, is the last working day of Bill Gates at Microsoft. He will stop all day-to-day activities from this weekend and will give his time for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and its work in health, vaccines, education and more. He will remain Microsoft’s chairman and its largest single shareholder (and world richest man).

A year before he started withdrawing from his official duties at Microsoft marking beginning of the end of an era – “The Bill Gate Era”.

Personally I have more reason to hate than to love Mr. Gate, but I simply can’t deny his contribution to IT Industry & our lives. I personally wish he could have stayed longer at Microsoft.

For those who think Bill ended as Harvard dropout, please correct your facts. He returned to Harvard last year. Below is video of his graduation speech (part1). For part 2, part 3, part 3, part 4

There was also an advertising event, in which two above the fold 125×125 image ad-slots were made available at $1 and $2 for a month (~100,000 page-views). Only Vaibhav turned up for this event but for some unknown reason couldn’t transfer $1 to my paypal account in-time. Devils Workshop Completes 2 Years! Join The Celebration!

Update: Entracard round is closed now. You can still enter for free domain registration & hosting round. All results will be declared on 25th June. Sorry for delay…

skitched-20080612-162620.jpg

Today we are celebrating second anniversary of Devils Workshop. Started as a hobby, over the time this workshop has become my source of living.

Devils workshop owes its success to all of you but there are some people without whom things would have been harder. Below are the names and roles of some special devils.

Payback…

  • Tanmay and Mayank (blog link), moderators and co-owners of Devils Workshop orkut community. They blogged here apart from me. These guys will be receiving 1 year rapidshare premium account sponsored by Tejas Dave, a security expert from India. If you are also interested in joining Devils Workshop as writer check this article.
  • Guarav, Pavan and Praveen will get a link to their blog in blogroll (at the bottom). Please do not confuse this with link-exchange. Guys you do not need to link back to this blog from your blog. These three are chosen for their valuable comments on posts at Devils Workshop. Coincidently these three are also among top 5 commentators here. Rest two are Adi Gosavi who doesn’t own a blog and Johnson who is already there in blogroll.

Now its party time…

  • Entracard 250 Credits: 1 random reader will get 250 entrecard credits. If you use entrecard just post a comment with “I want entrecard credit” in it and you will be counted in for entrecard draw. Draw will be held on 16 June, 12PM, IST. A user will be picked randomly by Anil Wadghule, a ruby gem himself!
  • Free domain and wordpress hosting for two: Self-hosted wordpress is the best way to blog (seriously) but it requires some $$$ for domain and good web-hosting service like dreamhost. So two of our readers will get free domain registration and hosting space from us. Also, if they want they will be provided all the technical support for their wordpress maintenance. I, personally feel this is most exciting offer from us so rather going for random draw, post via comments the very purpose of your blog. Two persons will be selected by Darnell Clayton and Thilak. Submission is open till 16th June. Result will be declared till 20th June as per the convenience of our judges. I am yet to get their approvals and time-slots.
  • Advertise for $1 on 100,000 pages: We run six 125×125 image ad slots in sidebar where each one is priced at $10/month. Now as part of our celebration, two slots will be given for $1 and $2 price for a month (~100,000 page views). Slots are given on first-come-first-serve basis. So rush to advertise on 100,000 pages for just $1. Of course, your site must not include porn, drugs or any sort of illegal content.

If anything is unclear, please ask via comments only. In case, you like to sponsor a gift for our readers, please contact us.

Thank you all once again… 🙂

Feeds are working now. Sorry for inconvenience.

Our subscribers had problem from last few days regarding our feeds. As I was busy I couldn’t dig into more details then. The problem turn out to be some large posts made content larger than 512 KB, which is limit imposed by feedburner, the service I am using for burning my feeds. Below is screenshot of error page.

feedburner error 502

I should have taken issue more seriously but something like size problem was never crossed my mind. So sorry for inconvenience. Feed is now appearing in feed-readers as well as in inbox for those who use email subscription.

Thanks to Anil, Kamran, Ankur, Gagan, Gaurav and Pranav for your mails/comments on the issue 🙂
