AMD’s Fusion APU Processors Combines CPU & GPU

Editor’s Note: The author wishes to remain anonymous.

The last time I went to buy a PC, I found myself at crossroads when it came to deciding what to choose: faster CPU or better GPU? I finally ended up asking my dad for more funds. 😛

In today’s age where you cannot expect parents to give you more funds, just so that you can get faster and better graphics, we have to make smarter choices.  Thankfully if you are planning to buy a desktop in the next few months, AMD has come up with some options!

A CPU design-innovator helping out with my graphics needs? It is natural to be asking that question but before I tell you what AMD has done, let us go over what the current scenario is.

The Problem with Processors

A motherboard chipset has typically two main areas. North Bridge and South Bridge. North Bridge handles all the fast paced communication between the RAM, CPU and GPU. While the South Bridge handles slower communication between the USB ports, keyboards and other peripheral devices. The bus speeds may vary for different Bridges. Too complicated? Let me simplify it for you.

Assume that there are two rooms in an office called Northbridge. One of them is called the CPU and the other GPU. The front desk (known as Memory Controller Hub or for those of you with tech flair, Integrated Memory Controller) of the office deals out the work to the respective rooms. Also, Northbridge office is somewhat fancy.

It names the corridor between the front desk and the CPU as FSB (Technical Note: AMD has now moved over to a Hyper Transport technology) and that between front desk and GPU as PCI. The front door is in the middle of the central corridor as shown in the picture:

AMD_North_Bridge
Normally, when information/work arrives at the front desk, the person there decides what sort of work it is. If it’s a graphic work, i.e., it involves complex float (decimal range upto 10^+/-32) computation, he sends the work to GPU.
GPU people are good at that sort of work.

If anything else is encountered, it is then sent over to CPU. CPU is expected to process a task as fast as possible whereas a GPU must be capable of processing a maximum number of tasks on a large-scale of data. This means GPU has lots of people working inside it . CPU has fewer, but faster workers.

It takes a lot of power to run both the rooms as resources are duplicated (like air-conditioning, lights etc). Also, as there is only one door from the front desk to the either of the rooms, a bottleneck for work flow is created.

There is GPU-CPU communication too, which keeps increasing the overall time required to complete the job.

The Solution by AMD

Now consider a new office designed by AMD. Let’s say AMD was a consultancy hired to build more efficient office by the guys at Northbridge. They want to increase the overall performance of the office by reducing the average time required to complete each job and make efficient use of resources.

You don’t really have to be an Einstein to figure out this solution. Combine both the offices, make the CPU office bigger and add the GPU people inside it.

Amd_north_bridge_new

That’s exactly what the folks at AMD have done. They combined their CPU design and processing skills along with the amazing pixel crunching skills of ATI (AMD has acquired ATI in 2006). This way the new AMD Fusion Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) was born!

AMD_vision_logo

‘What does this mean to me?’ Well, remember how the GPU had lots of people and it was draining resources like usage of electricity? Power that is very valuable when you have a laptop or are running a computer on a UPS. Power, which when saved, keeps the world’s environment cleaner and your electricity bills low.

Since the front desk doesn’t have to go through the trouble of separating out the work to GPU or CPU, we can expect faster working speed and lesser average execution time. This means, faster speeds out of lesser resources! 🙂

AMD Fusion (APU) Features

  • The innovative AMD Fusion Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) combines the powerful AMD processor technology and discrete-class, DirectX® 11–capable graphics combined on a single chip.
  • It’s the perfect combination of beauty and brawn – delivering smooth HD video, powerful multitasking and energy efficiency.
  • AMD’s new APU features up to 4 x86 cores combined with up to 400 Radeon™ graphics cores in a single microchip.

And that is no joke in terms of computing. Infact, in their ‘Vision’ campaign they claim 10+ hrs of computer usage and 94% better performance in gaming.

Head on over to the AMD website and check out their cool videos describing how the combined awesomeness of AMD processors and ATI gfx can make gaming, video/photo/music editing breeze lightening and at nearly half the power usage. For the tech savvy this guy has the 411 on AMD Fusion. Also, for those with decent tech know-how check out the white paper (its brown!) that AMD has released.

5 Tech Companies Google+ Could Put Out of Business!

Google_plus_5_companies_out_BusinessWhen two giants end up fighting the earth shakes. It can lead to a lot of upheaval  and there can be a few unexpected casualties. In the tech world these giants are Facebook and Google with is new social product Google Plus.

Google Plus seems to have been created with a lot of care and a single-minded focus on a goal. That goal being to get Google a popular and first class social product.

Google Plus is powered and made more potent thanks to all their various products. Here are 5 online services or companies that could be seriously hurt in the future with the rise of Google+.

#1. Skype

skype_google_plusSkype was bought recently by Microsoft, and it is a good video chatting client.

Google Plus has something called Hangouts. This allows group video chatting for free. This stands in stark contrast with Skype which charges for group video chatting.

Skype is backed by Microsoft and unless Microsoft does something spectacular, there is a good chance that Google+ will gobble up Skype users slowly but surely.

#2. Yahoo

Yahoo_google_plusYahoo it might be argued is going downhill considering they have gone from being a $100 billion company down to $22 Billion over the last decade. But its demise could be hasten with Google Plus which might challenge their popular services like Flickr.

Picasa never took off but now as part of Google+, it has got a new lifeline and might dislodge Flickr. With a coming together of all Google Products in Google+, might simply be too much for Yahoo to survive.

#3. Linked In

Linkedin_google_plusLinked In is a professional network and has great advantage over Facebook and other social networks because in it’s niche there is none like it. Linked In is a must for anyone who is a professional as it becomes your professional social network.

Google+ and its rise is also promoting the idea of Google Profiles. Not many people took interest in creating Google Profiles but it automatically comes to the fore with Google Plus.

If Google+ becomes a place for putting up professional resumes, then there is a good chance it might challenge Linked In over the next few years.

#4. Twitter

Twitter_google_plusTwitter is a gold-mine of real-time reactions from literally millions of people around the world. It has become a news source for many. The big plus for it is that is so easy to use with mobile phone, which has driven its growth exponentially. Google+ is also targeting mobile users aggressively and also follows the Twitter model of separation of following and followers (unlike Facebook where both contacts have to accept each other as ‘Friends’).

The early rise of Google+ might not wean away people from Facebook as much as it could from Twitter.

#5. Facebook

FB_google_plusThe big fish of social network, Facebook may not become extinct or may not be defeated by Google Plus anytime soon. But last year, Facebook has tried to branch out into messaging. This was feared to be Gmail killer and Google must have felt nervous.

With Google+, the issue is settled. Gmail will not be threatened by Facebook as it will have to keep improving essentially as a social product to stave off competition from Google+.

This might be good news as Facebook was taking its users for granted with privacy and design changes. Next time with Google+ around, it might be that easy at all. Also competition is always good for the end users, that is us.

What are you views on Google Plus? Will it seriously challenge these companies? Do drop in your comments.

5 Advantages Google+ has over Facebook

Google_facebookI have been using Google+ for almost a week now and there is still a long way for it to go before it starts really competing with Facebook. I think they have really integrated Google products and services nicely into a social network.

I felt there are 5 key advantages that Google+ has over it Facebook which might just cause a lot of headaches to Facebook over the next few months and years.

#1. Money

Yes, Facebook also has a lot of money but Google has a lot more than Facebook. Google can invest half a billion dollars for then next 5 years in Google+ only to make sure Facebook’s rise is kept in check.

Facebook does not have that sort of portfolio and will have to out do Google+, as it cannot outspend it.

#2. No Dependence on 3rd parties

Facebook depends on Skype for improving it’s chat services along with having video chatting via the browser. This is mutually beneficial to both Facebook and Skype.

Google+ depends on technology they have built with Gmail and Google voice for powering chatting between Google+ friends and groups. Google also owns Android, Google TV and Chrome OS which can power a successful social product even more.

#3. Standalone products

Google+ has been built more like a common meeting point for all their services like Gmail, Chat, Maps, Voice, photo sharing with Picasa and YouTube. This means it’s a social network made for bringing together different services offered by Google.

With Facebook there are no standalone products for video or images. I cannot share images and albums with people without a Facebook account all that easily like I can with Picasa.

#4. Search

Google has its own search engine which everyone considers the primary source of traffic for almost any website. Facebook has some integration with Bing to have Social Search but the results are not as powerful as yet to really get Google worried.

But a powerful search feature built into Google+ will certainly give Facebook more headaches to deal with.

#5. No Pressure

Facebook started as a college product and with its founders quite happy to see it spread across universities in the United States. Facebook evolved without the pressure of competing with the big boys of social networking. MySpace and Geocities were the social services back then.

The lack of pressure to beat these large companies meant Facebook could keep innovating and changing without upsetting too many users. Now Google+ is in the same situation. It is not expected to defeat Facebook in a face-off and it can quietly improve its service, without worrying too much about how users might react.

Facebook’s really big advantage…

I do not mean that Google+ has won the fight against Facebook. Not by a long shot, as only recently Facebook announced it is used by over 750 million people. So how many people use Google+ will finally end up deciding it’s eventual success or failure.

What are your views about Google+ and Facebook when compared? Do drop in your comments.

TechCrunch Shocked at AOL’s Secrecy on Huffington Post acquisition

Just a few hours ago the blogging world has been set ablaze  by the news of AOL acquiring the popular blog Huffington Post. The deal is worth $315 million. A few months ago AOL also had acquired TechCrunch, arguably one of the most visited and influential blogs when it came to technology. Huffington Post is known a blog that deal with politics. It’s founder Arianna Huffington will be Editor-in-Chief of all AOL web properties. This means she is also Editor-in-Chief of TechCrunch.

TechCrunch’s Disappointment

All this is business as usual when two smaller companies are taken over by a very big one. The two smaller companies can feel threatened by each other but over time work things out. The strange part about this unfolding was that Huffington Post’s acquisition was not broken first by TechCrunch! AOL slipped the news to everyone but it’s very own TechCrunch. Paul Carr from TechCrunch writes

We really have to stop being scooped by rivals on news affecting our own company. Tonight, courtesy of a press release that our parent company sent to everyone but us, we learn that AOL has acquired the Huffington Post for $315 million

Many might be wondering if this will lead to editorial arguments between Huffington and TechCrunch founder Micheal Arrington. A lot is being written about how Huffington Post leans more towards SEO content compared to TechCrunch. I think a lot of people are missing the bigger point.

The bigger point is how AOL treated TechCrunch. By not telling TechCrunch first about the acquisition they have, probably got the entire staff of TechCrunch distrustful of AOL.

AOL is not really a blog network. It started out as an ISP and added many other services and companies to its portfolio. In mergers and acquisition there are always things kept secret but releasing a scoop to your own web property’s rival is strange! This is probably why people trust old media less than ever.

Beginning of the End for TechCrunch!

I for one think, this could be beginning of the end for TechCrunch. With this action AOL showed that they do not really appreciate TechCrunch or people associated with it. They might have other ideas. When such instances happen, key personnel start looking for newer employers.

TechCrunch is great, because of its balance of tech news along with opinion. It also keeps churning out new content and avoids re-filtering their popular posts over and over again, which is what some other notable blogs do.

Hopefully AOL leaves TechCrunch alone and let’s it be, but I do not have high hopes. What are your views about Huffington Post and TechCrunch, being in one basket? Do drop in your comments.

How many Times do you Check Facebook ?

So, how many times do you login to your Facebook account and see who has messaged you , what are the updates and all? Well, this is kind of ‘in’ when a person replies to a status update as soon as it is updated.

So are you among those people who are 24/7 online on Facebook either it is on their computers, laptops or mobile phones or the one who care less! The percentage of people who care less are really hard to find. 🙂 I just came across this image on internet.

As you can see in the image the woman wants to get to a computer just because she wants to check in to Facebook. 🙂 Is the Facebook addiction taking over us ? Instead of asking money or shelter or food she wants a computer to see her Facebook profile.

How many times do you login to see your Facebook wall and are you addicted to it? I guess there will be Facebook addiction centers for recovery of those people who are severely addicted to it. 😀 Share your thoughts with me.

How would you Celebrate Christmas this year?

Christmas, related with snow, sledge, gifts and above all Santa Claus. But do children or youngsters think about all this now on Christmas?

I bet there are many who think about Facebook applications such as know your best friend this Christmas, or tag photographs this Christmas. Status messages like ‘Wish you all a Merry Christmas’ will be seen on every Facebook Profile. Facebook or social media usage is always increased during this festive season.

There can be many ways of looking at it. Facebook is the easiest way to communicate with all your friends and family. Imagine you are free, you are on leave and sitting in front of your laptop with Facebook open. The easiest way to wish everyone is write your wishes for everyone on your status message.

The other way can be send personalized messages to all your friends on their Facebook wall or Facebook messages. So, this is so easy you wished everyone and you didn’t even mind doing it. But should that be done ? Were holidays and festive seasons created for such purpose? No, no matter how much we are living in this internet world and can’t imagine our lives without Facebook or twitter, we do need real friends and real lives. Everyone even Mark Zuckerberg will love to receive gifts that are real. A life different from Facebook.

This is for what holidays are. To let you enjoy, meet friends, exchange gifts and share some quality time with everyone you love! I am not saying don’t use Facebook but get out of Facebook and twitter once. 🙂 I wish all my readers Merry Christmas. Feel free to comment. 🙂
