Facebook “Account Temporarily Unavailable” error!

This is a quick post to inform you people that some of the Facebook profiles and pages are not available at the moment due to some site issue. You will be getting this error:

Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.

For your information this doesn’t mean that Facebook permanently deleted your Facebook profile. It’s just a site issue or a fault at their end. There might be two reasons for this unavailability, first one is that the load on Facebook exceeds it’s capability. And second one is that the website is under maintenance or they might be launching any new feature and testing it in background on some profiles.

Facebook accounts will be up soon, check this space for more updates.

(Last updated: August 17th 2011 @14:53 IST.)

Update 1:
Few accounts are back including mine but some are still down.

How to remove/block unwanted applications on Facebook

Most of the time we click on Facebook applications and install them which seems very interesting in the beginning but irritates a lot after some time due to useless notifications. This post will tell you how to block these unwanted Facebook applications permanently. You can also remove these applications but you will still receive notifications even after removing them so it’s better to block them permanently. For your information this block is only known as “permanent block” however you can unblock them anytime you want.

How to block an app on Facebook?

  1. Click on “Account” on the top right side of your Facebook profile page and select “Account settings” from the drop down list.

  1. Now click on “Applications” option on the left hand side of page. This will open the list of all apps installed on your profile.

  1. Now select the application from the list you want to remove or block and click edit for that. After that click on the application’s name that will open the main page for that app.

  1. Clicking the name will redirect you to the main page of that application. On the bottom left side of that page you will see few links like “Add to My Page“, “Add to My Page’s Favorites”, “Subscribe via RSS” e.t.c. There you will find the required “Block app” and “Remove app” link. Use these links respectively to Block or Remove that app.

How to post animated status on Facebook

Unlike Google+,  Faceboook don’t allow it’s users to post animation on their profile or anywhere else on their website. But we know that impossible is nothing in this world. Let’s see how we can post an animated status on Facebook. 😉

I just found a profile posting .gif animations with it’s status updates. These animations are not full images rather these are just some smileys but animated ones. I tried contacting the profile owner but he simply refused to tell how he’s doing that. So unfortunately we can only share these statuses without any editing.

How to share animated statuses?

Check out this profile’s wall

Click on the profile above and check out cool animated status updates shared by him. Click on the share button with every status he shares and post it on your profile as a status. These statuses are not customizable but are really good and you can share it without any editing as he’s not using any particular name with those statuses.

Alternate way:

If you can’t see the share button with a status click on the time when the status was posted like “39 minutes ago” posted below the status. Click on that link and then share it with your friends just like you share a normal post or link on Facebook.

Facebook Phone Contacts, visible to everyone or not?

The rumors that your Phone contacts are visible to everyone on Facebook are not true, claimed Facebook on Thrusday (August 11th 2011). According to these rumors all the Facebook friend’s contact numbers in contact list of your phone was set visible to everyone on Facebook by Facebook officials but Facebook denied it.

The actual thing is that these numbers are not visible to everyone or even your frineds on Facebook. These numbers are only visible to you and are used for ease of access so that you can directly call a facebook friend from your phone just by clicking it. To enhance this thing Facebook also launched a new feature i.e “Request your Friend’s phone number” which’s available on platform’s like Facebook for BlackBerry and iPhone.

Since from the beginning, Facebook is very much concerned about it’s user privacy and they have a good privacy policy. They can’t even think of making all the contacts visible to everyone on Facebook so just Chill and enjoy Facebooking! 🙂

Finally we can see everybody who’s online on Facebook chat

A recent change in Facebook chat was one of most disliked changes in Facebook design and that was also one of the major reasons why Facebook is loosing it’s popularity. But this is for the first time that Facebook changed something after getting so many complaints and  requests. And the main reason for this change was a major hidden bug in that Facebook Chat.

This bug was that Facebook Chat wasn’t showing all the friends on it even when they are online and available for chat. Rather it was showing top friends only who either recently interacted with you or most interacted. The reason for this bug was the absence of a scroll bar in the Chat. It was only showing 18 friends (a combination of online and top friends).

But after so many complaints and requests (so called Facebook feedback) Facebook finally introduced a scroll bar in it with which you can see all your online and available to Chat friends just by scrolling down. However the default 18 Chat friends will be your tops friends only. Roll over your mouse to Chat sidebar to see that Scroll bar. If it’s not yet available for you then either you have less than 18 friends available for chat or this feature isn’t yet available for your profile.

Official Announcement:

After we made changes to Facebook Chat a few weeks ago, we got a lot of feedback that people missed seeing all of their online friends. Today, we made a change so that Chat now shows the friends who you message the most, as well as the rest of your friends who are currently online.

So what do you think about this feature? Is it gonna save the sinking image of Facebook?

Facebook events like “First 100000 will get free iphone/shoes” are fake!

This post is to inform you guys that Facebook events like this one “The first 100000 participants Will Get cool Facebook iphone Free” and many others are fake. Facebook users are blindly following the instructions given on such events to get a free gift which they are never going to get. Following these instructions results into spamming or even hacking of your account so beware of them.

Yesterday I got an invitation of this iPhone event and then one after another my friends started inviting me and it spread like a fire. But nobody thought that why they will give a free iPhone to a million Facebook users? The answer is that they are not giving it to anyone, they are just increasing fan count for their page.

There are some other events as well like first million people will get free pair of shoes, click like to get a free Tee-Shirt e.t.c, all are fake. Only events created by an official Facebook page of a brand are genuine. So next time do not invite your friends or click “Attending” to useless events. This might harm your privacy or misuse your information in other ways.

Share this post and inform your friends as well to protect them.

Facebook launches two new security feature for “Facebook Mobile”

“Facebook”- a website that takes user privacy seriously just launched two new features for those who uses Facebook from mobile. Well not the Facebook applications like “Facebook for Blackberry” and “Facebook for iPhone” but for those who uses m.facebook.com. These features are, “Mobile Social Reporting” and “Mobile Password Reset” Let’s have a look at them.

1. Mobile Social Reporting:

Social Reporting is a feature by which you can directly report something on Facebook that you don’t like and tell the person who uploaded that to remove it. This is a nice feature but people hardly takes the stuff down mostly because they do not know the person who’s reporting personally. Facebook is now testing this feature on m.facebook.com and will be available to all the profiles soon.

2. Mobile Password Reset:

Earlier if you weren’t able to login to your Facebook profile, you had to login to your Facebook profile from a PC and reset your password. But now you can reset your password straight from your phone using it’s browser. In case somebody hacked your profile or you forgot your password you can reset it using your mobile phone by entering either your e-mail or phone number or your Facebook username. Soon this feature will also be launched for all the Facebook profiles as well.

But these feature’s are not going to make any major difference in user experience. Reporting stuff hardly works on Facebook and very few people tries to reset their password from phone, first they always check from a PC that why can’t they login to their profile. 😛

“Copyright Infringement”-A policy where Facebook sucks!

Facebook is so much concerned about things we share on it. They don’t want anybody’s copyrighted content to be misused by anyone, that’s why few months back they have completely changed their “Copyright Infringement Policy”. According to this policy Facebook don’t allow anybody to use anyone’s picture or any other copyrighted material. One way to remove copyrighted material is to report it to Facebook and other way is that they regularly check the new stuff uploaded on their website but both of these methods sucks. You know why? Let’s check both of them.

1. Reporting for Copyright infringement:

When you report for a copyrighted material sometimes Facebook removes it but not most of the times, you can see thousands of fake profile on Facebook which are using other user’s picture and Facebook don’t remove it even after reporting it for so many times.

2. Facebook removing pics automatically:

Personally I feel that this is the worst feature ever launched by Facebook and it’s totally inefficient. You guys want the proof, just check the screenshot below. It’s a warning I got from Facebook on my homepage.

That means Facebook removed a picture “lunar eclipse” which was uploaded by me just because someone else claimed it as their intellectual property. But the truth is that pic was taken by me and even there’s a copyright of my name on it. Also the bad part about this feature is that they don’t ask you before removing a picture, they just remove it and leave a warning on your homepage.

There features are totally ineffective and useless, they are just disturbing normal Facebook users not the fake ones. What do you think?

Flip Through Your Twitter and Facebook Updates Like a Magazine

I am always on the lookout for new online tools to manage my social media profiles. The real pay-out is when some service approach social media management in a new way. For example Twimbow, which uses a colour coded strategy to manage your Twitter account.

With Layers – which is a Chrome App, we  can look up your social media accounts or even RSS feeds in a magazine-like flip layout.

Layers App Features

  • Install the Layers App on your Chrome browser and sign-in to your Twitter and Facebook accounts.
  • I could add RSS feeds also into the web app, which can also be flipped through.
  • If you are looking at Facebook or Twitter posts with a link, the page actually loads up on top of the slide, while you can still continue looking at other posts.

Layers, is not going to replace other social clients like TweetDeck or Hoot Suite. It cannot be considered to be an alternative to Google Reader either. But for some people who only follow a couple of blogs or casually glance at their twitter timeline, Layers will be very interesting.

Do give it a try and drop in your comments and views.
