[Google + Project] Google’s New Weapon Against Facebook

There is a popular cliché which is often repeated in the blogging world, that quote is “Content is King”.  If content is king, then surely Google and Facebook control much of the kingdom. Both are used extensively by people for discovering new content.

Search engines led the way for a long time, but lately people are getting their news, sharing photos and information on group events on Facebook. Facebook has forayed into search by tying up with Bing creating something called “Social Search”.

Google Plus, will be probably be the last time Google gets to challenge Facebook as a social network. If they get this wrong, we can safely assume Google just cannot crack the ‘social’ code.

Is Google on the right track?

Google actually has all services that Facebook offers. We can share videos on YouTube, send email and chat via Gmail and save our photos on Picasa. So why is Facebook so popular? The reason is that Facebook allows users to do all the sharing in one single place and with one single contact or friend list.

Google Plus will be on the right track if it can manage to bring all these services together but at the same time be simple and easy enough to use.

The answer to the question if Google will crack the social code, only time will reveal. But at here is a video about circles which is a feature of Google Plus.

If you want a demo of visit their official site and sign up to be invited. Google Plus will be rolled out gradually to all users.

Do you think Google Plus will be real competition to Facebook? Do drop in your comments.

Facebook overtakes MSN and becomes Britain’s Second ‘most used’ website

I think those Facebook days are coming back now! After everyone was disheartened when they listened the news that Facebook has lost 6 million users in US this may come as a breather!

Credit

According to the famous newspaper “The Telegraph“, Facebook has beaten MSN and is now the second most used website in Britain. Almost 27 million Britons were regular on Facebook in May,2011 according to the research by UKOM/Nielson. Putting back Microsoft’s invention is not so easy, let me tell you!

Okay, so which website was used the most? No points in guessing please, off course it’s Google. So, what do you think, will a time come when Facebook will push back Google too? With more and more people searching their Facebook profiles and pages for suggestions do you think this day is far enough? Let’s just keep our eyes open and wait and watch! Do share your views with me on this.

5 Ways to Make Facebook Better in Chrome

Starting with Better Facebook, there are many extensions available at Chrome Webstore to enhance Facebook’s functionality and remove unwanted stuff from it. Some of the new features like Facebook Questions which turned out to be a big spamming portal and Facebook photo theater are not liked by many of the Facebook junkies and this lead to development of many browser extensions and user scripts.

Here’s a list of top 5 extensions which can change the way you use Facebook.

#1. Better Facebook

An all-in-one extension for Facebook with ability to add tabbed news feeds, hiding posts you’ve already read, zooming photos, adding custom CSS skins/themes  and more. You can disable some of the annoying features of Facebook, like Photo Theater and Comment box update.

It also provides interesting statistics like average time you spend on Facebook everyday and Percentage of Facebook usage when compared to your whole internet usage.

#3. Di.slik.es – Dislike button for Facebook

Don’t know why Zuckerberg hadn’t thought of this! It adds a dislike button beside the like button, one thing you need to remember is, Di.slik.es follows your Facebook privacy settings, so if you’ve set your privacy settings such that only your friends can see your likes, then similarly your dislikes can be seen only by your friends (who have installed Di.slik.es extension ).

#4. Facebook Disconnect

Facebook tracks your visits when you browse any website that uses Facebook connect and also Facebook has a bad history of leaking personal information to advertisers for money! After installing this extension, you won’t be seeing Facebook like widgets in websites and you won’t be tracked by Facebook.

#5. Hide Facebook Questions

As I said, Facebook Questions has grabbed lots of love from spammers and this extension will get rid of them. I hope Better Facebook will definitely add this feature to their extension in the next release, up to then stick to Hide Facebook Questions extension.

6 Million Users Unfriend Facebook!

Whoa! What’s wrong here? Did we miss out something? Well, according to a source, almost 6 million people deleted their Facebook accounts in US last month.

So, now the total number of active users in the United States has reduced from 155.2 million to 149.4 million only. A good number of people I must say! It is said every madness has an end, is this the end to what we called Facebook madness or this is just a normal upside down that Facebook may be experiencing.

Inside Facebook’s Eric Eldon said,

From my experience, I get the sense that being on Facebook is not cool anymore. The early adopters and trend-setters are moving away. [But] these are also exactly the type of people brand advertisers want to reach; if they are leaving, it doesn’t look good for Facebook.

There are people adding or deleting their Facebook accounts due to several reasons. Some think that Facebook makes them work less or some just bored enough of it. Which group are you from?

I am scared if Facebook’s future is like Orkut? Well, if you do wish to delete your account permanently, here is how to do that. For others stay connected and continue “Facebook-ing”.

Anyways, what could be the reason? Twitter getting more popular or are  people just bored of Facebook sneaking into profiles? Well, whatever the reason may be, I think Mark Zuckerberg has to act fast!

View all comments is back for ‘facebook albums’

One of the most important features of Facebook albums was to see all comments of an album in one place so that you can reply all of them without opening every single pic of the album. But Facebook removed this feature just like many other important features that made Facebook albums quite boring and lesser user friendly.

But this feature of Viewing all comments is back again. Facebook launched it recently without making any official information on their blog so users are still not familiar with it. Also there’s an additional feature that you can not only view comments of pictures in your album, but also for the pics your friends have uploaded.

To check comments on the pics of your album, open an album and find the Album View and Comment View button on the top right of the page. While Comment view enables you to view all the comments of that particular album, Album view button can be used to switch back to normal album view where you can watch only the pics without comments. Check the screenshot below.

Parents Name Baby “Like” after Facebook Button!

A couple in Israel, have reportedly named their daughter “Like” after the Facebook button. Strange as it may seem, the parents wanted a unique and different name for their daughter. They decided they liked “Like” as a name.

Facebook seems to be really getting too much hold on our lives. Earlier in the year, a man decided to honour Facebook role in the Egyptian revolution by naming his daughter “Facebook”.

This sort of craze is a little unsettling. A name is for a lifetime and who knows 10-15 years later if Facebook will be around or not. Or what name the social network might go under by then.

Osama Bin Laden’s Death Video is the Newest Scam on Facebook

We have often covered in the past, scams on Facebook. This is usually something that look’s interesting but in reality when you click, find that everyone in your friend list has had the scam link posted on their wall with your name on it.

Osama Bin Laden was killed yesterday, and he surely is getting a lot of attention from Facebook spammers.

There are two spam links, I have come across up till now.

First one suggests that it is linked to Osama’s death video.

The picture in the link is quite gory and hence I have blurred it. The image is actually fake and there is not censored video available.

Another such scam suggests a link to click on for looking up Osama Bin Laden execution video. This one too is fake.

I really wish Facebook really figures out a way to control the spam that is getting posting all the time. Recently, I seem to spend more time deleting spam than pressing the link or share button.
