[Rumor] Facebook to become Friends with China!

There is a rumor going around that Facebook will end up entering China thanks to a partnership. Facebook has no presence in China and considering there are over 1.6 billion people in China, it must look like the obvious place for growth for the company.

The rumour was broken first by Thomas Crampton, a social media watcher for China and Asia.

According to the website

Facebook really is about to enter China, the agreement is signed. A domestic website will work with Facebook to create a new site. This new site is not interlinked with Facebook.com. Will this live or die in China?

Why Facebook might not be acceptable in China?

We have seen in the recent protests in Egypt, that Facebook was quite liberally praised by the protestors. This is something that China will be very sensitive about and might not allow a fully functional Facebook.

But Facebook having some sort of presence or partnership with China’s search giant Baidu, might give it a nice leverage against Google which has recently unplugged its services from China.

What are your views about Facebook entering China? Will it help the company more or harm it? Do drop in your comments.

Catholic Parish in Chicago warns against using Facebook!

Recently leaders from a Roman Catholic Parish in Chicago, have called Facebook a temptation and told followers to avoid using the social networking website.

The St. John Cantius parish leaders in their bulletin wrote:

“[Facebook] is exactly the opposite of the Christian culture where people go into the secrecy and sacredness of the confessional to blot out their sins forever”

I for one do not understand why people would not want Facebook. Most youngster will end up having Facebook accounts and a better way for parents and adults to supervise this use is to engage with them on Facebook. This is much safer for parents as kids will end up having fake accounts and not consult their parents at all if use of Facebook is banned.

As far as Facebook giving rise to temptation, we cannot truly control everything we see and read online or anywhere unless we live like hermits without television and internet.

Thankfully this is a view of a small minority as we can see even the late Pope John Paul II has an official Facebook page.

Barack Obama Using Facebook to get Support for 2012 Presidential Bid

The US President, Barack Obama has kicked off his re-election campaign on the internet. If you visit the official site http://barackobama.com then you will that the website offers two ways to get people into the campaign. One is by leaving their email address and zip code. The other one is by asking them to login using Facebook credentials.

Barack Obama does also have a Facebook Page which has over 19 million fans. Interesting in 2008 election campaign Obama was very internet savvy by having his videos and write-up being available through Facebook and YouTube.

Also Facebook does have lesser spam bots and most people on it are real. So it is not a bad idea for a politician to tap into the power of Facebook.

[Stats] Facebook Officially Nearing 23 Million Users in India

Facebook is closing in on 23 Million users in India. Currently it is said, that India’s population is about 1.22 Billion. That means only 1.88% of Indians are on the internet.

It may seem less but these do not account for all the people who have fake locations included in their profiles. Even if we consider that, it is far behind USA which has half its population on Facebook.

This proves that despite a lot of people knowing about Facebook in India, does not mean everyone has an account. This might be because of privacy issues or maybe people are still hooked on Orkut.

What do you think? Is Facebook growing as expected in India?  Do drop in your comments.

3 Reasons Why Facebook Will Never Become a Google!

Facebook has grown from a small project by some college kids into a billion dollar company. Yes, it is the story of dreams and super success. It had the rags to riches story and no wonder the Facebook story  has become so popular thanks to movies like “The Social Network”.

Facebook it seems will soon challenge Google or maybe even eclipse it. That might be interesting but I do feel there are 3 reasons, Facebook will never reach the size and more importantly the influence that Google has.

#1. A Closed Environment

No, I do not mean the work culture. I guess the work culture of both companies is pretty open and fun. Closed environment for me, means the lack of outward innovation. Google wants to be the company that manages your online data. That goal is simple yet open.

For Facebook, it wants to replicate your social life on the web. Great it has achieved that; but now what? More connections and more friends, along with more options to share content form the web. That is great but other than that, Facebook does not seem to have a open-ended aim.

With a faster web we might share photos and videos and maybe buy movies and services from our Facebook account.

#2. Lack of clarity on data management

For some reason Facebook messed up with privacy last year. It changed the privacy policies and made people uneasy about the intentions of Facebook. About a year ago, I had many friends on Facebook who were there because they loved it, now they are on it only because all their friends are on it.

Facebook can take users for granted but only to an extent. At some point of time, MySpace probably did the same and is now a dying service.

Google on the other hand has a reputation, which is more reliable at-least when it comes to handling our data.

#3. Content creation Vs  content sharing

Google encourages creating new content mainly because it wants people to search for newer and more up to date content. Facebook basically encourages sharing content thanks to links and photos but does not necessarily encourage creation of new content.

Facebook to really challenge Google’s influence on the internet will probably need to sort out these issues. They are not exactly issues or problems as Facebook still seems to be finding a purpose after 7 years of existence while Google always had a purpose well before it went live.

Facebook Reveals The Most Popular Time For Breakups

Have you ever given a thought on what all Facebook can tell you ? Well, the number of time a person stays online, the way he shares his information tells a lot about the user. Just for instance have a look at how Facebook reveals the time for breakups.

According to data pulled from Facebook, December is one of the most popular months to break up.

Credit

Mathias Mikkelsen posted the chart below, which he picked up from a TED talk by David McCandless. As you can see people break up least in summer seasons. They break up most on festive seasons like December.

What could be the reason ? Well as far as I think, people get over excited with their relationships when the new year is approaching. With new year resolutions many wish for a new and better relationship. One more reason I could think of is, people are on holidays so they think about it a lot and when they are busy working they don’t care so much.

South Carolina Considers Banning Social Media Behind Bars

Should prisoners be allowed to tweet, update their status messages or search their space ? One South Carolina state lawmaker says, absolutely not, and he is trying to make it punishable by law if they are caught using social media sites.

Inmates are accessing social networking sites from inside the prison using their smartphones which are smuggled inside the prison walls. Prisoners do not update their status or videos but some use it for threatening their victims through messages or stalking them.

The bill to stop social networking for prisoners would add 30 days to a prisoner’s sentence and require them to pay a $500 fine if they are caught posting on social networking sites. Well, I don’t understand why aren’t they trying to stop the illegal supply of smart phones inside the prison? If they do not get any phone they wont threat any one!

Let’s see if this bill passes and something is done! What is your view on this ? Share it with me here.

More than 50% Americans are on Facebook

Nowadays almost everyone has Facebook. According to a new study by Edison Research, more than half of Americans have profiles on the social-networking site.

This is Edison’s 19th study on digital media-related topics. Edison has tracked the growth of Facebook since 2008 and says the site was only used by 8 percent of Americans of the same age just three years ago.

Edison Research polled 2,020 people ages 12 and up to reach its conclusions. Since 2008, Facebook usage has increased, especially among people 35-years-old and up, the study says. There are many children on Facebook too and Facebook tries it’s best to remove such profiles. Facebook deletes 20,000 profile pages everyday(Source).
