Did you Quit Facebook on “Quit Facebook Day”?

Facebook has recently had problems regarding privacy and many felt passionately enough about the ‘Privacy Issues’ that they decided to form a community which has decided to quit Facebook. This is basically a way to protest and probably gather Facebook’s attention on how strongly they feel about privacy concerns and that their loyalty to Facebook cannot be taken for granted. The group is called 31st May: Quit Facebook Day. Their number though small compared to 300 million daily users is quite significant at 30,000.

The reasons are quite valid and some points they have raised are quite revealing.

  • It suggests that Facebook’s privacy policy is now longer than the US Constitution. The point being that it is almost impossible for Facebook to expect to read and follow the whole privacy policy.
  • The ambiguity of Privacy settings is taken further by 50 settings and 170 plus options on Facebook.
  • The problem mainly has been also the lack of clarity on what Facebook plans to do in the future.

There are many who are wondering if these Privacy concerns will hurt Facebook and end up losing users to other alternatives but I doubt that will happen. Facebook has responded with simplified changes to Privacy settings but I still they could have handled it better by being more open and forthright.

So do you think you will ever leave Facebook or is this just a sort of token opposition to Facebook? Do drop in your comments with your views.

We are still on Facebook and you can surely look up our page on Facebook.

Facebook Restored in Pakistan

Nearly two weeks after ordering Pakistan Telecommunications Authority(PTA) to Ban Facebook in Pakistan, Lahore High court has reversed its orders by lifting the temporary ban imposed on access to the social networking website. The ban came in as a result of the nation-wide protests in Pakistan due to Facebook event “Everyone Draw Mohammad Day” organized by a group of people on a community page.

In a statement, Justice Chaudhry told the court,“Restore Facebook. We don’t want to block access to information” .

Ban was lifted this morning after assurance from the government that they will soon develop a system that blocks offending images, referring to it as “blasphemous material” from the internet, that arouse resentment among the people and brought them on to the streets. Similar to blocking of un-islamic content from you-tube that was un-banned last week, after similar orders from the court.

Yesterday, Facebook was also Banned in Bangladesh due to the offending images from the page as a result of the contest, which led to on-street protest in the country. After the orders from Pakistan High court, we expect that the ban will soon be uplifted in Bangladesh also.

Under 18? Facebook treats you different!

You must have seen a notice as soon as you logged in to facebook yesterday telling about Improved Privacy Controls.

I visited the privacy settings and Facebook showed a message saying:

Since, You are under 18, we take extra steps to protect your information. Learn More

That learn more link redirected me to a help topic which gave a clear explanation about facebook’s new policy:

Minors (anyone under 18) who use Facebook have a slightly different experience with privacy than adults. Both adults and minors have some basic information (name, profile picture, gender and networks) appear when people navigate to their profile. This information may be accessed by applications that they and their friends use. Adults and minors both appear in search results on Facebook. However, minors do not have public search listings created for them.

The “Everyone” setting works differently for minors than it does for adults. When minors set information like photos or status updates to be visible to “Everyone,” that information is actually only visible to their friends, friends of friends, and people in any verified school or work networks they have joined. The only exceptions are for “Search for me on Facebook” and “Send me friend requests”, where if the minor has set those to Everyone, we respect the Everyone setting.

Mark Zuckerberg , CEO of Facebook came up with few plans to make changes in Facebook to make it safer to use. Facebook has focused on main 3 things which are:

Single Control for your content:

This single control will help you to set the option about who can see the content of your post. You can also change the option to view the content by everyone, your friends or friends of your friends.

More powerful controls for basic information:

This is the next step of Facebook for maintaining privacy. Facebook have reduced the amount of basic information to be visible by everyone. Now you can control who can see your friends, pages etc. But, I guess we have to make this option public otherwise, it would be tough to search us and know more about us and Facebook is all about knowing each other better.

Sharing information with third party:

Now you can choose the option that any Facebook application or website can access your information or not. If you are like me who don’t like to access games or other applications , you can easily turn them off , thus your information will be secured to you and third party applications or website won’t able to access it.

All these settings are expected to roll out in next two weeks. Hope all this options ends up with positive and useful note.

Do share with us what you think about these changes by Facebook, are they worth for securing our accounts by hackers?
