Few days back facebook released a new feature name as Facebook like. This Facebook like button will let your reader quickly up vote (like) and of your post and it will be shared on his facebook wall. Since Facebook and twitter are one of the best way to drive traffic, I recommend you should add Facebook like and Tweetmeme/Twitter button into your blog.
Dean peters released a WordPress plugin for Facebook like. Using it, you can quickly add Facebook like button anywhere in your blog.
This plugin comes with an option panel, which can be use to customize Facebook like button:
Facebook is best way to be in touch with your friends and family. It is getting better and better day by day with lots of applications, privacy settings and fun but the only problem which I face while accessing Facebook is to use it’s in-built chat.
I don’t prefer to use in-built chat in Facebook instead I prefer to use Chitchat which is a chat client for desktop. This desktop client is especially for Facebook chat. It’s simple and similar like other chat clients. You can easily chat with many friends with the help of tabbed window. It also shows the notifications in the tray when your friends are signed-in or signed-out.
The layout of Chitchat is very simple and yet there are no options to change the background colors for users but yet useful and fun to use. I loved the cute emotions of Chitchat, they are attractive and animated. The best part is that it has nothing to do with Web browser , its independent thus no need to keep your browser open for Facebook chat.
Chitchat is freeware and easy to download. It can be installed in just few seconds. You can install Chitchat for Facebook from its official website. For me, It’s is good to chat with desktop clients rather than using Facebook in-built chat.
Do share with us, what you prefer to use for chatting with your Facebook friends?
We all know Facebook has a massive user base with over 300 millions users being regular visitors every day. Facebook is the largest, biggest and probably the most envied Social networking website in the world. Also very interesting unlike other social networks it has not been acquired by any other big fish.
So that warrants a question which is how does Facebook make money?
If Google can sell ads in the form of sponsored links and Adwords why can’t Facebook? Facebook surely does earn money by selling advertisement real estate. It is often done in a targeted way as Facebook knows what we like thanks to their “Like Button“. 😛
Selling Gifts on Facebook which users can send to their friends. This also is a way to make money for Facebook.
Selling virtual rewards on gaming apps like Mafia and Farmville. There are addicts to pay real money to buy influence and rewards points. Much of this money might go to the app developers but I am sure some of it trickles down to Facebook.
Finally Facebook also attracts a lot of investors who invest in the company to keep growing as there any with great potential always attracts a lot of money. But such investors are usually who will bail out at some point of time or the other.
So these are the ways Facebook makes it’s money. I do not think it is a lot that they generate but must be a decent amount as most people still expect Facebook to keep growing and earning revenues. It also turned down an 1 $ Billion offer from Yahoo as it was confident of earning enough by itself without compromising on its independence.
First thing we all do before starting our blogging activity is to check all the social networks like Twitter, Facebook etc and all e-mails. As a blogger, it is important to keep ourselves updated. But it is time consuming to open all the accounts, check the status and update the status. To save this time I prefer to use integrated extensions for my all the accounts. Like for my Facebook account, I use Gmail Facebook Integration Extension for Google Chrome.
Google Chrome Extension helps me to discover whatever is going on with my Facebook without logging to my Facebook account. Like this:
If you want to try it out this extension, just install it. It won’t take more than 5 seconds to install.
You can install Gmail Facebook Integration extension from here.
Once you install it, you will see a Facebook icon in the sidebar of your Gmail.
Now you have to confirm for authorization
Allow the authorization and you will able to view and update your Facebook account.
Yet I haven’t faced any problem with Gmail Facebook Integration.
Do share with us, which integration you use for social networking websites and your Gmail account.
“You have been tagged in a photo by your friend Xyz. Click the following link to view Xyz’s album http://……”
This is a kind of notification I used to receive lot of times a week! And with an excitement to see which photo I am tagged in – I used to follow such links to get equally disappointed. Everytime.
I am not a very great fan of tagging photos or getting my profile tagged in a photo which does not show me at all. Many times on Facebook, people keep tagging their friends in absolutely any image they upload. This could be a real fun for many genuine shares, but not all! I then finally unchecked option of “Allow tagging” on my social networking profiles!
This photo-tagging is now going on to a different levels by not limiting it to the famous networking sites. This may make life easier for people seeking information and may be difficult for those not willing to share information.
Face.comare the makers of a photo-tagging application on Facebook. They are now sharing their API with public. Which means that everyone can integrate their face detection and recognition technology with own websites, applications and services.

This open API is in alpha stage now and is available for free to use. See overview
How it can be used?

Imagine you were enjoying your weekend night with friends in a club. You saw a beautiful girl or a handsome boy there. You exchanged smiles. But somehow you were unable to get her/his name. Later, never managed to know even a word more. Sad, wasn’t that?
Now, if you have applications developed by this API installed on your mobile phone then all you need to do is take a photo and ask that application to search for all the information associated with that photo (person) including links to social networking profiles.. Then you can see their Name, Facebook, Twitter profile links and so on… !
But I have my doubts.
I think this is one of those technologies which is not going to be liked by every user. If you’re a developer, this could be a nice value addition to your websites or applications.
What do you think of photo-tagging? Would you like to be able to use or share information this way? Let us know.
Today I came across a great Facebook app which allowed me to chat without any clutter on my profile page rather than have all the chat contacts scrambled and listed on the right hand corner of my browser.
The Application is called Neat Chat and allows you to create chat rooms and also share files online without any confusion and seamlessly with your friends on Facebook.
I tried out Neat Chat and could also book mark it to my profile. (see image below)
This sort of Chat client is ideal for Facebook groups which are common interest and you can upload files for all of them from the chat application.
Do try out Neat Chatand let me know what you think about it? Do drop in your comments. 🙂
I wrote about a community pages and how they are owned by everyone. They are different from the other focused single owner Facebook pages which are all about creating a fan page or discussion group around your blog or website. Facebook has had a redesign and many people are complaining about the new privacy rules.
What you see above is a community page called “Listening” which is dynamically created and I could see posts by my friends on Facebook with the word ‘Listening”. The strange part is that I can also see global posts or status messages of people all around the world who have the word ‘Listening’ within the content.
I think a lot of people will not like their private status messages being available so randomly on public Facebook community pages. While something like this already exists with Twitter but then Twitter is a public forum strictly and not really a private forum. This makes a real mockery of controlling who can see your status updates.
What do you think? Is Facebook being fair about privacy?
I had written in the past couple of days about how Facebook has changed ‘become a fan‘ to ‘Like‘ for Facebook pages. I even wondered it Facebook has got it right by making such a change to Facebook pages.
But here is the new dope I came across on Mashable and that is that now if you are a newbie to Facebook and sign-up for the first time Facebook is suggesting pages a user can ‘Like‘. 🙂
The image above shows that Facebook is probably just suggesting very popular pages some new user can ‘Like’. This of course can be helpful for a new Facebook user to get started and start playing around and explore Facebook in depth. There is one detail which might be distressing and that is new users would not know that clicking ‘Like’ to a Facebook page means those choices are publicly available to be seen.
If you notice if you come across a profile where you can see no information but you can still see the pages they “like”.
Will this start getting Facebook money?
Know about Google adwords where specific ad-words are placed or sponsored links are put up with Google Search results. I think Facebook will in all probability do the same with Facebook Pages where they might have certain owners bid for their pages to be introduced or suggested to new users.
I am not very happy about this development but I am not to alarmed either. I guess we will have to wait and see. What do you think? Do let me know through your comments.
One of the major but expected changes in Facebook has been that there are no Facebook page fans. A fan is converted into a ‘Like’ and that has started a debate amongst Facebook users if doing away with ‘fans’ was the right thing to do.
It has been explained in numerous debates that Facebook prefers us using ‘Like‘ button instead of ‘Become a Fan’ as people are more likely to click on Like than any other option given.
This makes perfect sense of Facebook to start really working on earning revenues from their users.
When it comes to community user owned page like lets say the community page of a famous book, musician or author then people might prefer to be fans rather than having a ‘Like Button’
I think like previous arguments against changes with Facebook re-designs, this negative vibe to the Like button instead of Fan Pages will also die a natural death.
As long as Facebook has a simple interface that works and allows people to share things easily with their friends and also allow virtual farms and gangsters with Framville and Mafia Wars, people will still flock to Facebook in their millions everyday.
So what is your opinion on the new Like Button for Facebook Pages? Do drop in your comments.
Facebook pages are very useful for creating communities but usually they are owned or created and maintained by one person or mutliple admins but the control or ownership of the page is limited. This is fine when it comes to a company or a brand that needs such controls but what about things that are hobbies like reading books, cooking, photography?
The above image is of the community page of Lord of the Rings book. If you have added me as a Facebook friend and look up my info, you will see one of my favorite books is Lord of the Rings and it is hyper linked to this Community Page.
Unlike other Facebook pages there are no owner or admin but all people who have Lord of the Rings as their favorite book will be have access to its wall messages and also rights to post something to the community.
This is a great way to create organic communities which will truly get together perfect strangers with similar interests discussing useful things.
The default information of such community pages is taken from Wikipedia and it is still a beta product so expect some glitches.
Let me know if you like the idea of building dynamic communities with mass ownership rather than focused ownership and administration? Do drop in your comments.
