How to find your Orkut Friends on Facebook

It’s the time when most of the people have started using Facebook too along with other social networking sites specially orkut. But it’s so difficult in the begining to find each friend by name, search it and then send a friend request to add them as your friend. Don’t worry FacebooKnol readers don’t need to do all this, we have a simple method for you. Just follow the steps given below:

  1. Click on this link(new window) which will open the “find friends” page of facebook (for orkut).
  2. Click on “Click here to Login to Orkut” botton given on that page.
  3. A new window will open, just enter your Orkut Login details, verify the captcha there and download the .CVS file (here CVS stands for Comma Separated Value).
  4. Upload your .CVS file on the same page in “contact file” box and click “Find Friends”

That’s it, after this a friend request will be sent to each friend you want to add. 🙂

“Tag Friends in Your Status and Posts” is not for tagging friends only

Recent Facebook launched a very nice feature of “Tag Friends in Your Status and Posts” on which you read an article by our Editor-  Aditya Kane on Devils Workshop. This post is just to clarify it further. The official blog of Facebook clearly says that “Tag Friends in Your Status and Posts”, but the reality is that you can tag anything in your status and posts like friend’s profile, groups that you have joined and even pages of which you are a fan.

To tag a friend, page or group, just use @ symbol before you start typing the name that you want to tag. To know more about it read this post on Devils Workshop.

Facebook tagging is a nice and important feature cuz it gives the information about the exact person, page or group about which we are talking or writing something about it. So next time don’t forget to tag the person or anything in your status. 🙂

How to switch back to Facebook from Facebook Lite?

I recently came across a post on Devils Workshop on Facebook Lite. As I went through the comments I found out alot of readers are facing problems of auto- login to lite version instead of original facebook version.

It took me a while to get to the root of the problem, as I am not facing this problem and also none of the friends around me. 🙁

Here are a few possible solutions that may help:

  1. Change the URL from http://lite.facebook.com/ to http://www.facebook.com/
  2. Click on settings tab, select “Friendships” option. You will get a page as the one shown below. Click on “main site“, that will redirect you to the older version.
  3. On most of the occasions facebook lite is supported only in English, so a change in the language may do the trick. To change the language click on settings tabs and this time select the “Language” option. This will show you a page to select a language. Select a new language. I would suggest English (Pirate) 😉 and click on “Set Language”. Voila, we are back to good old facebook. Go to settings again and switch back to previous language. If you face problem finding language settings in non-English language, go to this link http://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php?language
  4. Another way is to flush the DNS cache of your system.

o To flush DNS cache in Microsoft Windows (Win XP, Win ME, Win 2000):-

    • Open Command prompt (Click on Start -> Run -> type cmd)
    • Type “ipconfig /flushdns” and hit enter key.
    • Type “ipconfig /registerdns” to register back dns.

o To flush the DNS cache in Linux, restart the nscd daemon:-

    • Open terminal, type “/etc/rc.d/init.d/nscd restart”, hit enter key.

o To flush the DNS cache in Mac OS X Leopard:-

    • Open terminal, type “lookupd –flushcache

    ex: bash-2.05a$ lookupd -flushcache

o To flush the DNS cache in Mac OS X:-

    • Type “dscacheutil -flushcache” in your terminal to flush the DNS resolver cache.

    ex: bash-2.05a$ dscacheutil -flushcache

I hope these solutions helps you out and get you back to Facebook 🙂

All about “Block People”/”Ignore User” on Facebook

“Block people” is one of the most advanced feature by Facebook. There are 300 million Facebook users now but still mostly aren’t aware of this “block people” option and they don’t even know that what happens when you ignore somebody on Facebook. Don’t worry we have all your answers, after all you are on FacebooKnol 😉

How to ignore/block someone on Facebook?

Well there are two ways of doing that,

Method 1:

To ignore somebody on Facebook, simply click here(or go to your privacy settings) and add either the name or the e-mail id you want to block in the box given below on that page and click “block”.

(check the screen shot below for more clarification)

Method 2:

You can also ignore somebody directly by visiting his/her profile. To do so, you first have to delete that person and then click “Report/Block this person”. Check “block this person” and click submit. You can also report a person for any particular reason.

(check the screen shot below for more clarification)

What happens when I “Block People” on Facebook?

Blocking users on Facebook is much more advanced than “ignore user” option of Orkut. If you block someone on Facebook he/she won’t be able to,

  • See your profile on Facebook search results.
  • Either open your profile, if the ignored person is having a bookmark of your profile, that will be automatically re-directed to his/her homepage.
  • Send pokes/message or any friend request in future.
  • See your comments in public pages.
  • See you in anybody’s friends list.

Obviously that’s a very good feature and important too in order to make Facebook clean.

Blocked person is sending me messages using fake profiles, what should I do?

Well in that case simple make your profile invisible, that means only you will be able to see other Facebook profiles and nobody can access your profile. Read “Set Your Profile Search Visibility on Facebookfor more information related to it.

So make facebook beautiful with “Block People” option and make Facebook better with FacebooKnol. 😉

How does Facebook plan to do it?

Facebook has 300 million users!

Do you know Facebook has more users than the population of most countries in the world? Actually only three countries have a higher population than Facebook.

That’s China, India and the US. At the rate Facebook is growing only 2  may remain. No prizes for guess which two 😉

If you take the world population as 6 Billion and compare 300 Million as Facebook users, it means potentially about 5% of the entire world is using Facebook.

How does Facebook service 300 million?

  • Facebook has 10,000 servers which includes 1800 MySQL servers which are overseen by only 2 data administrators !
  • Facebook has planned to spend over $100 Million over the near future to acquire about 50,000 servers.
  • The ratio of Facebook engineers to Facebook users is 1 Engineer to a Million users.

Facebook’s gold mine.

Facebook is expanding and doing it fast. They also are adding different services to keep that base growing. Facebook is being lent money by many financiers including Microsoft!

You have to log into your account to actually access any information Facebook provides. That means Facebook literally controls the content you can access and that’s a dream come true for any advertiser.

Facebook already is the largest Social Networking site and is still growing. With a IPO being planned next year it looks like Facebook will over the next couple of years become more than just a social networking website. Wonder what it would mutate into? What if it mutates into something like Google! 😉

Tag friends on Facebook with Twitter like @ Symbol

If copying is the best form of flattery then Twitter must be feeling really flattered by Facebook over the last few days.

First the advent of Facebook Lite and its pretty obvious way of makings its interface look like a Twitter layout on steroids. Now the latest form of flattery shown by Facebook towards Twitter is that you can use the ‘@’ symbol to tag your friends like you do in Twitter.

How does it work?

  • Where you type in your comment start with ‘@’ and then type the name of the friend you want to tag.
  • Immediately you will see a drop down list of your friends as you start typing. See the above pic.
  • The messages will be displayed on your friend’s wall and he/she will also receive a notification.
  • If the message is unwanted, the person receiving the update can also remove the tag.
  • The ‘@’ function does not work while adding a comment to a message and Facebook Lite too does not support it.

Facebook has made the ‘@’ functionality look far better than it does on Twitter and that is a credit to them.

Twitter has grown phenomenally because it is a public forum and its profiles are all open to public. Now I doubt that is something Facebook would want to copy! 😉
