Scrapboy Supports Facebook Now After Orkut & Myspace!

Started as orkut messenger, scrapboy improved over the time. After myspace, they now added support for facebook.

Long list of supported features and appealing user interface will make scrapboy your sweetheart. Designed with keeping minor details in mind, scrapboy take care of missing feature on individual social networks. So do not think it as another desktop-way to access few online sites.

Still latest facebook chat feature is not available in scrapboy as it is integrated into Digsby. But on the other hand scrapboy is much more centered around social networking sites while digsby is yet to support orkut.

Digsby Integrated Facebook Chat! Support for last.fm, Flickr & Digg on the way!

If you missed it, we reviewed digsby last month. It is a desktop application which integrate messengers, emails and social networking sites. (Read More…)

Also if you are on facebook then you must be enjoin recent facebook chat feature out there!

Now if you noticed one thing, facebook chat have no desktop software version. So if you hate to chat from your browser, you can use digsby to chat on facebook now.

From Digsby Preferences, click on Add IM Account option and you will see facebook chat there as shown below…

Once you done with adding facebook account part, your facebook buddies will appear in digsby chat list.

With facebook chat, another IM is added to digsbys’ list of supported network.

They are also working hard to integrate more and more social networks. In fact there is a official poll going on titled, "What Social Networks Do You Want Next?". You can vote for your favorites social networks if you want to see them in digsby.

I have voted for orkut as I am eager to see it on digsby. But with just 6% votes for orkut at the time of writing this, looks like orkut-digsby integration will take long time.

Last.fm is leading poll with 43% votes, followed by Flickr (32%) and Digg (31%). Considering popularity of these tree leading sites, we can expect them on digsby soonest!

Facebook Chat is Live Now…

Two days back I posted about upcoming Facebook Chat feature… Its live now!

Here are screenshots…

Here are prominent features as highlighted by facebook…

  • Start instant conversations with all of your friends.
  • Check the Online Friends menu to see who is online now.
  • A green dot means your friend is available to chat.
  • Don’t want to chat? Make yourself unavailable.

  • You can update your status from chat panel
  • feature is implemented as a chat-bar. So length of page have no effect on user experience
  • speed is quite impressive (atleast as of now) considering the overall slow facebook!

To-Do list…

  • Group chat is not there as explained earlier.
  • There is no invisible status option. You can go offline but you can’t hide… 🙁

It turn out to be much better than what I have expected. Specially pop-out chat window is something Gmail team have a look at. I am wondering why Gmail never thought about giving extra features in pop-out window!

Facebook To Launch Gmail Like Chat Soon!

Facebook is testing a new one-to-one chat feature which will add much demanded instant messaging support.

Considering slowness of emails and hard-to find walls on cluttered facebook profile pages, this move will really improve communication with online facebook friends.

Following is a screenshot of this upcoming feature, courtesy CNN.

Yep, this looks more like Gmail chat feature with other notable similarities. It will also have option to pop-out chat into a separate window and a partial history feature where you can see and clear recent conversations. But Gmail being an email service, reside in a single window, while in facebook multiple profiles and other apps’ pages remain open in multiple windows at the same time. So it will be interesting to watch how this feature will be integrated?

One more thing, the same chat window will be used for other notifications like stories from news feeds, much like Orkuts scrap alerts feature.

Although in first release, there will not be any support for other instant messenger networks, Michael Arrington is hopeful about third parties figuring out a way to hack into the service as they’ve done with Yahoo, MSN and AIM in the past.

Facebook – Ignoring Application Requests From Specific Friends

One more step from facebook developers to save their users from application requests spam. After famous ignore-all and block-all application invitation scripts, now you can block all application invitation from specific friends.

Tom Whitnah quoted on facebook developers blog,

We’ve heard from developers and users that they feel certain friends seem to be a large source of unwanted application requests. So with this change we wanted to give users the opportunity to filter out these friends’ requests.

I have many facebook friends who are just addicted to facebook apps and contribute largely to invitation spam. On the other hand I also have celebrity bloggers like Darren, Amit, Thilak in my friend list and I will definitely love to try applications they suggest.

Using Facebook Invisibly – New Facebook Privacy Options!

After Googles introduction of invisible status mode in Gmail Chat and improved privacy options for orkut users, its facebooks’ turn to do something better for facebook users privacy. And they really come-up with much better and easier to use privacy controls.

One new option really caught my eyes is ability to control who can see your online status!

You can find this option is profile privacy controls as shown in screenshot below..

If you set it as No one then you won’t show up in other online friend-list even when you are logged into orkut!

By the way if facebook is willing to offer this level of privacy feature then they should have added it to top-menu bar or on home page. A optional check box on homepage saying "sign me invisibly", like its there on many messengers sign-in screen, could be much better as people often like to switch their visibility depending on work load, etc.

Facebook AutoPoke Script – Poke Back All at Once!

 

One of Devils Workshop reader mailed me this screenshot (at the right) of her facebook account! Being user of our Facebooks anti-apps Ignore ALL & Block ALL scripts she requests a way so that she can "poke back" all pokers at once. 

Thanks to GreaseMonkey, we can use a auto poke script!

When installed this script will automatically check if somebody had poked you whenever you go to your facebooks homepage. If it sees any pending pokes, it will automatically poke back the poker. (Check following screenshot!)

You have 40 boxes added to your profile page. To help you keep your profile uncluttered, we’ve created an extended portion of your profile. You and your friends will be able to click through at any time to see the boxes you move to the extended portion of your profile.

Means all the buzz in last month about facebooks anti-spam feature against their very own facebook application turn out to be true!

I have seen following when i checked my facebook page…

When I clicked on Move To Extended Profile Button all junk just disappeared! HooRaY!!!

But wait where it gone… ??? :O

Now at the bottom of every facebook profile you can see a link like below…

Yep! The useless boxes doesn’t get load anymore without your permission!

Good move from facebook as it saves lots of my bandwidth! 😉

This extended profile concept is limited to your profile only! Means extended profile setting will not apply to all facebook profiles. So you can unclutter your profile for your friends but have to face all of the shit from them if they choose not to care about cleaning their profiles!

I guess facebook can do better by giving user a choice to make EXTENDED PROFILE VIEW is default across whole facebook. So whenever a user goes to any profile, by default only small and important portion will be loaded and rest will be waiting in extended profile. This way facebook will look more personalized and also lots of time & bandwidth will be saved for users as well as facebook! 🙂

Block ALL Application Requests with One-Click [Facebook]

Few weeks back we came up with Ignore All button script which let you ignore all facebook application invitations in one click.

But Kenshiro, Kiljaeden and few users wanted similar button for blocking all applications.

If you are not familiar with blocking application…

you can visit any applications facebook page to block that application from using your information. This amongst the other things prevent application to send further add request to you.

Some really evil applications forces their existing users to invite other users in order to access or unlock important features they provide. As an example many quiz application let user take quiz directly but forces user to invite friends before he can proceed to results. Thus increasing spam!

Now back to topic!

This script adds two buttons as shown in above screenshot on facebook requests page.

  • Block ALL Only button: This blocks all application found on request page but does not ignore pending requests. So if you choose to confirm any of pending request, you can still proceed to add that application. Note that adding any blocked application will unblock them automatically.
  • Block & Ignore ALL button: This blocks all application found on request page and ignores pending requests!

Quick FAQ:

Q: I just want to Ignore ALL request without blocking applications?

Ans. Use Ignore All button script which adds only ignores the applications.

Q: OMG! I blocked an application I wanted to use. How to unblock it!

Ans: Go to this facebook privacy page and you will see blocked application list.  Just click on remove links next to individual applications you want to unblock. Press Save to confirm changes. (see screenshot below)

Organize Facebook Friends into lists (Groups)! [New Facebook Feature]

If you have too many facebook friends and have really tough time managing them then cheer up buddies! If you haven’t noticed yet then move to friends page on facebook and a small banner will welcome you as shown below….

Yep, its completely redesigned friends page! And "Make a New List" option is on right side…

In just two steps you can create a list!

Step 1: Click on "Make a New List" option and select a name for list..

Step 2: Add friends to the list…

 

Also if you want to rename the list there is edit link near list name!

Considering facebook’s 5000 friends limit on a account this option will really help you to manage many task easily like…

I wish the list should be extended to facebook apps API so that many application can make use of it. Almost every facebook application at some time forces you to invite friends to use that application. It will be great if we can use lists there. This will surely result in less spam and will be highly convenient as for different apps you want to invite different set of people!

One last important thing… The lists are private! So you can user all imagination to speed up listing of your friends! 😉
