How to get list of plugins installed on any wordpress blog!

Editors Note: This article reviews Plugin Meter. Unfortunately the site reviewed in this article has stopped functioning.

If you are a wordpress blogger or just for some other reasons if you want to know which plugins are installed on your favorite wordpress blog then just go to Plugin Meter!Just click on following link and you will see list of plugins installed on Devils Workshop! You may need to check following link in Internet Explorer.

http://www.pluginmeter.com/blogs/www.devilsworkshop.rsites.dev6.rt.gw

ADVERTISEMENT

You can change bold part in above URL with any wordpress blog address to see its plugin list.

This newly launched service is still in beta. Its directory index have 14371 WordPress blogs covering stats about 3239 plugins. You will be lucky if the blog you are looking for is already indexed. Which is the case with almost all famous blogs. Even if the blog is not in the list you can submit its URL to get it indexed soon!

Additionally what I like is list of Top 20 plugins worldwide, which is displayed on its homepage! As the stats are real time, you can consider plugin meter as a good place to find really top plugins.

ADVERTISEMENT

Problems in Beta…

  • You may find few pages messed too much in Firefox. No-No don’t blame firefox as its responsibility of web-designer to insure site works properly in different browsers. Atleast major browsers like Firefox, IE, Safari & Opera.
  • I also noticed it dumps just list of all plugins found on blog. I guess it would be better if atleast they differentiate between active and inactive plugins.
  • Also there are small tweaks can be performed in user interface.

Finally…
I wish I could come across a service like this when I was new to wordpress. I still remember testing really bad plugins in the beginning which wasted my lots of time as well as efforts!

AJAX Style Orkut Album – Navigate Albums the fastest and simplest way!

UPDATE: Not working with NEW ORKUT! Due to lack of time I find its hard to update this. Anyway if you like this script then you may subscribe to my RSS feed or email alert to receive automatic updates in future!

This is GreaseMonkey script which divides Orkut’s Album page into two section!

In Left section all photos are arranged in scrollable column like a vertical film stripe and in Right section one pic gets displayed at a time! You can click on any pic in left side film stripe and corresponding picture gets loaded in right section without reloading entire page!

You can see following screenshot to get better grip! (Click here to enlarge image)

This script is as usual for firefox users so get that if you don’t have it already! If you are new to GreaseMonkey Scripts, then you may read GreaseMonkey Help!

Finally click here to install this script!

ADVERTISEMENT

About Fastest Way… The Script fetches images dynamically thus saves bandwidth by not downloading entire page!

ADVERTISEMENT

About Simplest Way… The Script let you jump from any image to any other image in completely random way. That too with thumbnails for better user experience!

Broadband users will get a feel that the orkut albums are available offline. It also works with dial-up connection (tested on 56kbps) without any error although when you click on a image it seems like script has stopped working but it will get loaded silently!

I am thinking of upgrading this script to add CACHING support so that all pics will be loaded in background and you can navigate whole album on single page (like its available offline).

Well your comments are all I am waiting for to go ahead! 🙂

The FireTorrent extension strives to offer the most user-friendly BitTorrent experience. We’ve integrated the torrents manager as a separate tab in your browser’s download manager, and torrents can be downloaded from any website with a single click.

This results in a great user experience and should be attractive to both people that are new to downloading torrents and advanced users.

So click here to install FireTorrent Extension!

Orkut Pending Friend Requests Deleter Script!

After long time I got some time for orkutting yesterday and noticed that there were 250+ friend requests pending when I checked my friends page!

Actually they are pending from more than a month and I really want to clean-out! Then I proceeded manually and soon realized steps through which I was going…

  1. Selecting ‘EDIT’ link;
  2. Clicking on ‘DELETE’ button;
  3. Again Hitting ‘YES’ button when confirmation dialog box pops out!

So I decided to create a GreaseMonkey Script and after few hours of works its ready for you! The good thing about this one is its preconfigured to delete only pending friend request although it is technically capable of deleting all friends!

ADVERTISEMENT

Installation:

  1. Install Firefox if you don’t have it! (yes it only works with Firefox)
  2. Install Greasemonkey extension. (Need help)
  3. Finally Click here to install Orkut Pending Friend Request Deleter Script!

Note: If meanwhile you want script to stop from executing, first thing to do is close that tab/window!

Update: One of DW reader Pari needs some help so she can delete multiple friends from her friend list other than pending friend requests list…

Technically you can delete all your friends in one go irrespective of their status! Also you can delete all friends from a particular level or group!

Lets do it for All Friends first!

  1. Right-Click on GreaseMonkey Icon in bottom-right corner of your firefox window.
  2. Select Manage User Scripts option. (screenshot =>> )
  3. A window will open listing all the scripts! (See following screenshot)
  4. Select (by clicking) Orkut Pending Friend Request Deleter script by clicking on it!
  5. Click edit button on right side. A box will pop-up!
  6. Type (copy/paste) this address http://www.orkut.com/Friends.aspx in that!
  7. Hit OK!

(Click on image to enlarge it)

Now for a particular friend Level/Group!

  1. First Right-click on a friends Level/Group link which you want to clean!
  2. From context menu, select Copy Link Location.
  3. The link is on your clipboard. You have to use this link instead of address we have used in above step 6.

Need more help?? Ask me… preferably via comments 😉

Apples Safari for Windows – Launched and Exploited Within 2 hours!!!

Well if you don’t know about Apple’s Safari 3 Launched for Windows, then first start its download as its worth giving a try!

Being a fan of Apples product line I was delighted by Safaris availability on Windows platform. The features I really like is its kool built-in RSS feed reader! As of now I can safely say that its my second favorite browser next to Firefox (yes nothing seems to beat firefox) 🙂

Though Apple described 12 reasons on their site their security claimed was zeroed in 2 hours of Safaris release!

The credit goes to Thor Larholm, who wrotes in his post Safari for Windows, 0day exploit in 2 hours

…. The logic behind this vulnerability is quite simple and the vulnerability class has been known and understood for years, namely that of protocol handler command injection. A browser typically consists of a multitude of different URL schemes, some of which are handled by internal functions and others that are handed off to external applications. On the OS X platform Apple has enjoyed the same luxury and the same curse as Internet Explorer has had on the Windows platform, namely intimate operating system knowledge. The integration with the originally intended operating system is tightly defined, but the breadth of knowledge is crippled when the software is released on other systems and mistakes and mishaps occur…

ADVERTISEMENT

URL protocol handlers on the Windows platform work by executing a process with specific command line arguments. When Apple released Safari for the Windows platform they neglected to implement a proper level of input validation for these arguments, which means that you can break out of the intended confines and wreak havoc….

He has described step by step method to use (or abuse) this exploit!

Finally its proved again that nothing is safe on Windows… 😉

If you are using a system with Windows XP and Windows Vista and also use Firefox on both installations then you may find it annoying to manually synchronize profile settings like Bookmarks, Extensions, Passwords, History, Cookies, Preferences, etc between two Firefox installations!

It may be the case the you want to synchronize both firefox but left wondering how to do it? Also some may be using Google’s Browser sync which takes up lots of bandwidth! So here lets do it Geeky way without transferring single byte to or from any third party site!

#Before Going Ahead

Lets describe example scenario so that it will be easier to grasp the things.

  3. Say today I have installed Windows Vista and also a new firefox.
  4. I am in Vista currently and my Vista installation drive is C: and XP is on D: Drive. (This may looks different if you switch between Operating Systems)
  5. My user name is Devil on both installations.

#Lets do it (Before you gets bored 😉

A. Copying profile.ini

  1. Open Windows Explorer [Hot-Key: Windows Key + E ].

2. Go to Windows XP’s Firefox Profile Folder. (Note:-Replace D: and Devil with your XP’s installation drive and user name respectively. Also save your path in text file for later use)

D:Documents and SettingsDevilApplication DataMozillaFirefox

  1. Copy profile.ini file present in above folder (to clipboard) [Hot-key: Ctrl + C]
  2. Now Go to Vista’s Firefox Profile Folder. (Note:- Replace C: and Devil with your Vista’s installation drive and user name respectively)

C:UsersDevilAppDataRoamingMozillaFirefox

Here note that AppData folder may be hidden and you may need to to unhide it by changing settings in Folder Options. You can alternatively click on Windows Explorers address bar any type the following:

ADVERTISEMENT

%AppData%MozillaFirefox

  1. Now you may find a profile.ini already existing in above folder. Delete it or rename it if you want to play safe!
  2. Now paste profile.ini here which we were copied in step 3.

ADVERTISEMENT

B. Modifying profile.ini :

  1. Open profile.ini.
  2. The content may look like as follows:

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/fu77kq9n.default
Default=1
[Profile1]
Name=Guest
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/Guest

  1. Now modify IsRelative=0 and Path=<Full Path>.
  2. You can INSERT Path you have saved in above Step A.2 between “Path=” and “Profiles”. Also change ‘/’ after Profiles to .

  3. With these changes Path=Profiles/Guest will become Path=D:Documents and SettingsYogiApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesGuest.

  4. Repeat above modifications for all entries.

  5. Final content of profile will look like as follows:

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=0
Path=D:Documents and SettingsYogiApplication DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesfu77kq9n.default
Default=1

Firefox Tweaks: Address bar as Search BOX – Let Google make you feel Lucky!

If you use address bar as search box in Mozilla Firefox then you can skip to advance options!

Yes in Mozilla Firefox you can just type your search query in address bar and get the search results displyed to you!

By default, whenever you hit enter after typing anything in address bar (also called navigation bar/ URL bar), Firefox checks if entered string is valid address or not! If its valid address firefox tries to load corresponding site/page for you! (Note that here if site is down or you have misspelled address, it won’t get directed to search engine). If entered string is a invalid URL, it will be submitted to Google Search and search results are returned!

If its fine with you then its great but if you want to use Google Search with I am feeling option or want to use another search engine as default then read following steps to change defaults search engine or its parameter:

  1. Type about:config in address bar of Mozilla Firefox. A page with lots of text and 4 columns will get displayed!
  2. Type keyword.URL in filter box. The long list will be trimmed down to just one line! 🙂
  3. Right-Click on that line and select modify option. A box will be displayed.
  4. Enter any of the following string for corresponding search engine!
  5. Changes will be reflected immediately with out any restart!

Glossary:

#Valid Address: A valid address is something optionally starts with protocols like HTTP (i.e. http://) and ends with domain name (e.g. .com, .org, .net, etc) and must not contain any space in between! So anything that does not this definition is a invalid address. Well firefox does not need to bother about all things and a simple check can be used – whether user entered address contains space or not!

#Google Search with I’m Feeling Lucky: From Google Search Homepage when you enter a query in search box and and instead of hitting Google Search hits I’m Feeling Lucky button, Google will redirect you to the first search result which is often what we want!

Multiple Firefox Profiles at the same time – Firefox Command-line arguments trick!

How often do you wish to run multiple firefox profiles at the same time?
In slightly non-technical words do you ever need to check two different accounts of same service, at the same time?
As an example, consider the scenario (which is 100% real-life and was encountered by my friend Deva) – you are checking mails of your Gmail account and at the same time you want to check another gmail account. What you normally do is open up another Gmail account in another browser. Another similar situation often encountered by many orkuttians who have multiple orkut profiles!

Now from firefox 2.0+ onwards this is solved and you can run firefox with as many accounts as you want! Look at the following screenshots in which I am checking two Gmail accounts at the same time! (Click on image to enlarge it)

Here comes one of the most awaited trick!

#1. Creating a Profile.
By default firefox runs in default profile. To run another instance of firefox with different profile you need to create first a different profile. To do this run firefox with command line parameter CreateProfile followed by profile name.

ADVERTISEMENT

Window user, can click on “Start -> Run” and execute firefox with followed by the command line arguments. For example,

"C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" -CreateProfile Rahul

where Rahul is name of the profile. You can use any name.

ADVERTISEMENT

(Note that the path C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox may change as per your installation directory.)

On similar lines Linux and Mac OS user can create a new profile.

#2. Running firefox with new profile.
First start firefox the way you start. (This is to assure you that we are going in right direction).
Now Windows users can again click on “Start -> Run” and execute firefox with followed by the command line arguments,

"C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" -no-remote -P Rahul

where Rahul need to be replaced by the name of the profile you have used in step 1 while creating a new profile.

ADVERTISEMENT

When you hit ENTER the profile will start in new context!
The key here is -no-remote command-line argument!

Extra Tricks:
You will probably use two or more profiles frequently. In that case the step 2 to run firefox with a new profile will need to be tweaked!

  • In simplest way Windows user can right-click on existing firefox shortcut and select copy option from right-click menu.
  • Then paste it at your favorite place (probably desktop)
  • [optional] It may appear with name like Copy of Mozilla Firefox, change it to some convenient name like Rahuls Firefox or New Firefox or anything you like.
  • Now again right-click on new shortcut and click on properties option in right-click menu.
  • Switch to shortcut tab in properties window.
  • In target you may find – “C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe” change it to something like “C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe” -no-remote -P Rahul. (see screenshot below for more help)
  • Now click OK.

Thats it. Another firefox is at your bay!
