Interesting Fact: Popular Facebook users have Bigger Amygdalas

Did you ever think that your brain has something that manages your social network? A new study shows that it all depends on Amygdala.

Well, how you manage your real social network, the number of friends you make, it all depends on amygdala, which is  a small almond shaped structure, deep in the temporal lobe. This manages your friend circle.

Larger the amygdala, larger group of friends. Facebook has almost taken over our lives. Whether its status updates, number of likes or just comments. Some people look at their status as good or bad according to the number of Facebook friends they have.

In my opinion I think this is a very nice way to stay in touch with all your friends. Facebook if done in a limited way can be a great way to make friends, stay in touch and enjoy. More of anything sure leads you to addiction. Right!

Facebook study: How Status Updates affect Popularity on Facebook

Have you ever given a thought about status updates that people do on Facebook? What lies behind, the data, what matters and all ? Well Facebook’s Data Team has analysed it all.

The words, timing, age and popularity and many more things matter while gaining popularity on Facebook through Status updates. 🙂 They analysed the words that come most of the time in status updates. Things that come into picture when a person updates his status and effects later are as follows:

Age and popularity : Young people tend to express thoughts in an aggressive way by using angry words and more sentences with I, me, myself. Whereas older people write longer updates with more prepositions and articles, more about other people including their family.

More popular people use less angry words, talk less about their families, less emotional and use less past and present tense verbs or words that may be related to time.

Timing : People tend to write positive updates in the morning and negative updates at night. People generally tend to talk about a preferred time of the day. That is words about sleep increase at night and peak in the early mornings, when people should actually be sleeping.

What your friends like : Very surprisingly, negative status updates receive more comments and positive updates receive less comments. Whereas positive updates gets more Likes and negative updates get less Likes.

Birds of same feather flock together : We know that friends with same likes and dislikes stay together. Just like that the words we use in our status updates are almost similar to what our friends use.

So well this explains us all what we write what we don not and how it affects on our Facebook lives. 🙂 You can use this as a guide to rock Facebook. Use more of ‘you’ , less emotional status updates… In short you know what to write and what not to accordingly.

Have you applied any of this and seen any difference ? If not use this analysis and see what happens. 🙂 Share your views with me.

Well the top 10 list consists of :

  1. HMU: This is the abbreviation for ‘Hit me Up’. According to the Facebook blog, in September this pattern emerged and started rising like never before. Many folks were writing this on their status update to say that they are free, want to hang out or lets party. Just to tell that a particular person is free, this was used.
  2. World Cup: World Cup is a much awaited thing for the sports lovers. Obviously it was mentioned more and more on the status updates of people. They loved to share about their teams, winners, goals and what not about World Cup on Facebook.
  3. Movies: “Toy Story 3,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” “Inception,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Iron Man 2” were the five most discussed (in that order). I remember having a discussion on Twilight movie for more than a month, and who can forget the talks on Inception! 🙂 Well, we do talk about movies and stuff on Facebook and this list is a result of what we love to do most. 😉

Facebook Friendships on World Map

Paul Butler a Facebook Engineer just tried his hands on visualizing the Facebook Data. He was interested in seeing what Facebook Friendship looks like on a canvas.

Well, he took data from all the places, matched them through latitude and longitude and went for more techy stuff! I will tell you what he got back as a result.

credit

This is what he got, a whole big network of Friendship. These are people who are connected with each other in some or the other way. Some may have met during a journey or some may be connected through their common friends. Reasons may be many but this is huge.

Looking at the world through Facebook’s eyes. 🙂 All I will say is thank you Mark Zuckerberg for making us all so connected. What do you think? Feel free to share your views through the comments below. If you have any tips mail me at tips[at]fbknol.com.

5 Ways to Find your old Friends on Facebook

Facebook and Friendship goes together now. I wonder who doesn’t use Facebook to make friends or to be in touch with old friends.

There can be many ways to find friends on Facebook, some of them are:

  • Find a Friend: You can find this on the down right hand side of your Facebook Profile. Click on ‘Find a friend’ . You will be asked your id and password. Facebook then runs a check of the emails in the  address book of your profile to see if any of the addresses match people who currently have profiles on Facebook. It gives you an option to select which people you would like to send friend requests.
  • Classmate search: You can search for your classmates. Be it your school friends or college friends, all of them can be searched through this. Go to Classmate Search and write the name of school or college you had been to.Facebook searches for people on Facebook that have included that school or college and gives you the names. Choose and send friend request to them.
  • Co worker Search : Now instead of going to your coworker’s desk and asking him to send a friend request, you can now search them nicely. Go to the Coworker’s page and mention the company’s name. You can enter the name of a certain person for whom you are looking else you can ignore that.
  • Name Search : Any time, anywhere you can write the name of the person you are looking for in the search tab provided on the right upper side of your homepage. There are chances you will get him until and unless that person has chosen to be not visible to search queries.
  • Facebook Directory : This is an online directory of the names who are present on Facebook. Just write the name and you are provided with a long list of people having that name. You can also type the email id of the person if you are finding someone specific and you know the id. 🙂

There is one more way , you can find all the above except the directory ones, in just one go. Go to this link and you may enter the name and choose the options as you want.

Earlier we could import our contacts from Gmail but now that feature has been removed, so we can add people from these links. Feel free to share your views through the comments below. If you have any suggestions or post idea that you want me to write send your tips at tips@fbknol.com. All kind of suggestions are welcome.
