Is this the future of our television sets? Sony unveils Google TV powered sets

A few days ago Google TV was launched as a product. Google TV has started a new revolution some would say. The revolution diversifying into television from the internet. I do not think that is the case. I think Google believes (probably rightly) that television coverage will be through the internet. YouTube’s success must have convinced Google.

So now that leaves the hardware manufacturer. Sony has just unveiled their new Google TV enabled line of internet televisions sets.

How will Sony’s Google TV work?

The new Sony device will have 4 USB 2.0 slots on the side along with an Ethernet connection at the back. It will work through the internet using the Google TV platform to show and control the content.

I was wondering if it is practical for people to buy a new Television which runs Google TV only. I think it can be hooked up like a normal TV set but not sure if the software inside will be compatible.

You can view all the features and specifications here.

Remote Control resembling a mini-keypad…

Here is how the remote of the new Sony device will look like. It seems quite neat and just by looking at the keys and various options, we can assume that Google TV will have a lot of options and tremendous potential.

Sony has been an old player in the television manufacturing business and has probably guessed rightly that the future of TV sets is through the internet. But it is Google which might end up not just helping us search for addresses and maps online but also helping us search shows, movies and live sports action.

Windows 7 phone has been released to compete with iPhone and Android. I wonder if we will soon see Microsoft TV. I think if this happens it will be good for competition.

So take a look at the video which explains how Google TV will power a Sony set and let me know your views on if this is what all our televisions sets in the future will be like? Do drop in your comments.

Google TV goes live and has a social layer with Twitter

Google TV was announced earlier this year during the Google Developer IO conference. Not many details were out then but Google has recently showcased some interesting apps with Google TV.

There are two ways at the moment one can avail of Google TV. One is to get a standalone smart TV or the other is a separate box to use with the current TV.

Google TV has social layer with Twitter

Google has recently announced that it will enable Twitter to be accessed on Google TV. I guess it would be an ideal way to watch TV and get feedback on movies or shows before you see them. I guess its to early to say but I think having a Facebook app on Google TV might be a better idea than Twitter.

Why Google TV is a great idea?

I guess with the rise of YouTube, Google has realized that in about 10 years from now a major part of Television might end up being broadcast over the internet. Thus Google having a platform like Google TV powered by their experience with cloud could be a major revenue earner for Google.

At the moment you we might not have the option of getting Google TV in India, but you might want to check out the video below which showcases its apps.

So what do you think? Will you be signing up for Google TV? Do drop in your comments and views.

Google TV to be showcased next month during Google IO developer conference

A couple of months ago I wrote about Google getting into Television with its android apps for Dish Network and also entering with agreements with TV set manufacturers. I recently read on Mashable that Google TV will be unveiled during Google IO developer conference next month in May. Google IO Developer conferences is where Google usually showcases the next big product they are going to introduce. Last year they had introduced Google Wave.

Google will introduced the Android based Television platform during this conference and has probably entered into deals with hardware manufacturers like Sony, Intel and Logitech, who will release products on Google TV platform.

In all probability Google is betting that most television content in 5-10 years will be handled through internet connections and having a television platform will give it a great head start over competitors regarding apps and search content features.

Why is Google eyeing the TV screen?

There are three screens which dominate our everyday life regarding managing and accessing information. They are computer, mobile and television screens. Google already has a presence on two out of three and it wants to now have a presence in handling information on the TV screens.

In the future we might not really have channels regulate timings for our favorite shows but we might have to subscribe to shows through the internet and download or stream favorite shows on our television sets. This will be surely a place for Google search to get involved for people to search through a large repository of data on which show needs to be looked up by customers.

Google also owns YouTube and if YouTube videos could be streamed online to our television sets it could completely change the way we watch TV.

So what do you think? Will Google change the idiot box like it changed the internet? Do drop in your comments and views.
