If you like social networks, Gmail or just about any site, chances are there is a helpful GreaseMonkey script on it. It would be really nice if while on a website I had a simpler way of looking up a GreaseMonkey script than actually searching for it.
GreaseFire is a Firefox browser addon. It works only if you have GreaseMonkey installed on your browser. Check out our page on GreaseMonkey to learn more about it.
Now once this add-on is installed I can browse normally and click on the GreaseFire icon at the bottom right corner. This shows the number of scripts available with that website.
As you see in the image above the total number of scripts available are shown. Click on it and you will be show a complete list of all the related GreaseMonkey scripts.
I usually use Chrome as my primary browser but thanks to this Add-on, I will be using Firefox primarily. Who knows where I across a great GreaseMonkey script. 😉
Well here are some of my favourite Greasemonkey scripts for Firefox users that totally enhance the Facebook experience. 🙂 Ever wondered how cool it might be if you are able to see the highlighted birthdays on your homepage, clean out your Facebook wall with less advertisements, manage your homepage the way you want it to be and many more.
Cleaner Facebook Wall : Imagine an advertisement free Facebook wall. I usually get irritated by the zillions of advertisements overcrowding my homepage. So I was searching for ways to avoid it and I found this Greasemoneky script which gives you a cleaner Facebook wall. 🙂 A better experience all together.
Highlight the Birthdays: There are some of my friends who really have problem remembering the birthdays, even if the birthdays are now shown on the homepage of your Facebook account. This Greasemonkey script highlights the birthday reminders on the right hand side of your homepage. Well, a nice way to remember the birthdays, and wish your near and dear ones’. 🙂
Enhance the Facebook account: Apart from one click logout, stretched homepage and keyboard shortcuts you can manage the sidebars, their visibility and customize the homepage as and when required. This Greasemonkey script enhances your Facebook experience making you tweak and change as and when required. 🙂
Installing and uninstalling the above user scripts is pretty easy. If you have any doubts on installing the Greasemonkey scripts refer to the tutorial here. 🙂 Hope these Greasemonkey scripts were helpful. How did you find them? Do you know any other such scripts? Feel free to give your views through the comments below. 🙂
Google started using Doodles on their search pages for some fun I guess. But this fun started to become, a tradition of sorts and many times while on Google we wonder what is next?
Amongst all the Google Doodles there are a few which are my favorite ones. Like the one below from 2007 celebrating the 60th Independence day. I wish there was a way to get these doodles back on when I visit Google.com with my browser. Unfortunately the doodle comes with an expiry date as it is supposed to only celebrate something special on that particular day.
Favourite Doodle is a nice littler extension for Chrome. Just check out the link for it and install it.
Now when you visit Google.com, you can automatically click on the doodle itself to browser through a gallery of doodles from the past.
I liked that it was a comprehensive list. I could check all the Doodles from the past and found one I liked, as you can see in the image. Independence day for me is everyday I guess.
A couple of days back Ruchi told about an interesting and simple trick to get old layout of Google back. As she mentioned in that post, there is a possibility that Google might update the link and the trick might stop working.
So let’s see what other options we have apart from that to remove the sidebar from Google search page.
Depending on your web browser, you can follow one of these tricks:
1) Firefox: Download the Grease Monkey script “REMOVE Google Sidebar”. This script does what its name says- it removes the sidebar from Google search page. There is one drawback however. For split of a second the search page shows the sidebar, before removing it. This can be distracting at times.
2) Chrome: Chrome users can install “Hide Google Options” extensions. This works the same way as the Grease Monkey script for Firefox. You can turn it on or off by single click depending on your preference.
Search Result With the extension turned off
Search Result With the extension turned on
3) Internet Explorer: If you use Google as your home page then you can change the home page to http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=all. This however is not a permanent solution and will work only till the time Google doesn’t apply sidebar feature to this link.
Hope those of you who want to remove the sidebar from search page can easily do it now. I personally like it since it allows me to filter my search in all possible ways. But there are many who prefer the earlier clean search page and feel that the new search page is more cluttered.
So are you going to remove it, or like me you also prefer the new feature?
If you are using Firefox and Chrome, the one big complaint you would have had is that Chrome browser does not support Greasemonkey scripts. GreaseMonkey scripts are scripts that run inside Firefox thanks to installing the Greasemonkey addon.
There have been ways to get Grease monkey scripts running inside Chrome before and one way was using GreaseMetal for the Chorme. Now Google Chrome version 4.0 has officially offered support for GreaseMonkey scripts.
GreaseMonkey on Chrome
This of-course means that over 40,000 add-ons are now available on the Chrome browser and basically takes the one thing that might be keeping away Firefox loyalists from moving over to Chrome.
Make sure you have the latest version of Chrome. It needs to be a stable version of Chrome version 4.0 (stable) was recently released.
I used Grease Monkey scripts which I use with Firefox and have had no trouble using any one of them. But I am not really a GreaseMonkey fiend and hence I am sure that in these early stages many scripts might not work with Chrome browser.
Why I liked Chrome’s approach was because unlike Firefox where you had to install a Grease Monkey add-on and then install the script from UserScripts.org, with Chrome you simply download the script and Chrome automatically converts it into an extension.
Sounds cool? I think it would give that extra push to some Firefox loyalists to move to Chrome if not atleast most of them will feel a sense of familiarity with Chrome.
Let me know what do you think about Google Chrome supporting Grease Monkey scripts?
I am sure a many of you have Gmail accounts and if you frequent internet a lot you might have two or even Gmail accounts. Sometimes for a backup, sometimes to keep work and personal related emails separate majority of us might have two Gmail accounts. For instance I have two accounts, one was a personal one, the other I use for testing purposes, like I used it during this post. 🙂
If you have two Gmail accounts and need to use them often it can be a bit of a bother considering when you sign-in with one account you cannot sign into the another account on the same browser. Rahul Bansal did write about it previously on how to go about using different profiles on firefox at the same time.
Recently I used another method by using a Firefox add on for using two Gmail accounts at the same time. For using this add-on you need to have Greasemonkey installed on your Firefox browser. If you are using Windows with Firefox you can install Greasemonkey from here.
The add-on is installed and you can use Gmail multi user login. 😉
Once this add-on is installed on Firefox it replaces the Sign-Out link to the right hand top corner of your Gmail account with a drop which allows you to log into another Gmail account.
Here is a video of how the Add-on works.
Go ahead and try it out and let me know what you think about this add-on through your comments.
Well undoubtedly Youtube is the opium of the E-age… the more you spend time on it, the addicted you get to it. Also, it’s a great time pass watching videos and tutorials, but very few use this effectively…
Simple Commands in Youtube
There are lot short commands that are very useful in Youtube that can be suffixed at the end of your video URL to enjoy their functionality
Suffix
‘&fmt=18? for high quality videos
#t=XXmYYs for XX mins and YY seconds using this you can view video from exact time you want for example if you want to view your video from 2min 22 sec the command you should use is
#t=02m22s
‘&rel=0? – to disable related videos

Well, these are good but i personally find them very irritating and absurd as you need to do it manually every time you watch any videos.
The good news is there are scripts and addons available for it.
Greasemonkey Scripts
If you aren’t aware of what spices of monkey I am talking about better check this post and proceed ahead.
A good all-in-one script that blocks ads from the sections you want, lets you download videos into several formats, automatically expand the “More” section, see all comments at once and more.
This script does the job at once but there are few more that are useful
Allows you to watch videos without the distractions of chats, comments, ads and so on, while also giving you the ability to resize videos, customize the background color, center the video on the page and more. Works with dozens of different video sites.
Helps you clean up the appearance of the YouTube video pages by removing the comments, related videos, promoted videos, sharing information and footer. Also allows you to restore them instantly if you should choose to do so.
Mozilla Addons
There are plenty of Firefox addons that helps to improve Youtube experience but i would mention only a few which i personally use and are useful.
Once installed, Video DownloadHelper’s icon will animate when you come to a page that has a video you can download. Once you start the download process, you can also choose which format you want to save the file as.
Collects some of the most popular Greasemonkey scripts for YouTube that do things like give you an alternate player, a cleaner theater interface and more instead of scripts you can use this addon.
