Flattr: a revolutionary micro-payment system!

Times have changed and even people in countries like India feel like appreciating Free stuff which they use with some small donations. People around the World especially the users in the western countries already donate generously for small as well as big efforts, for e.g. Mozilla, Wikipedia and small app developers.

People still feel what if they are able to donate some very small amounts to a lot of such developers and organizations, as PayPal and other processors makes it virtually impossible to transfer any amount less than US$1.

This is the reason Flattr came to existence. Flattr’s concept itself is derived from the problem people face in appreciating small but a lot of efforts. It let people credit their accounts with a smallest monthly donation of 2 Euros and then just clicking a button on the developer’s website fulfils the wishes. Flattr is a give and get concept, you must donate to get something in return. While the return completely depends on the number of clicks on your Flattr button, your donation can still remain the tiny 2 Euros.

Flattr charges 10% of whatever amount you receive in donations to keep itself running. Check out the video to get a very nice explanation.

This video clearly explains what is Flattr!

Please do comment on what you feel about such small websites creating a massive change in today’s world, in the way things operate and what else can be done to bring more such changes. Don’t be late, I’ll be waiting to hear from you 🙂

MyNeta – The ultimate guide to keep a watch on elections in India!

I have always been a strong advocate of the fact that IT is just not about Facebook or Twitter, it is about how we can change things around us in a better way. I had previously written about How to battle Corruption online with CVC and now in the similar league I am going to discuss about Myneta.info, a website-based concept by Association for Democratic Reforms which is all about publicly displaying data related to candidates who are contesting both State & National-level elections in India.

The data is sufficient enough to initially judge the kind of candidate you are going to vote for during the election process. The website displays information in tabular form about all candidates of Rajya Sabha (Lower House of the Parliament) and Lok Sabha (upper house). It even displays a separate list for the elected Members of Parliament (MP) for the recent elections. What is more interesting is that it even covers all the candidate data for the various State Assemblies alongwith a separate list of Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA). It even displays a comparison chart of different candidates of various parties. The only thing I did not like about this website is the Layout design which could have been much better.

The website even runs a National helpline number (1-800-110-440) and a SMS facility (Send Myneta [PINCODE] to 56070) which categorizes this website as a serious effort to improve our political system. We must join them in this effort and must exercise our Voting rights sincerely. Do post your comments on how do you find this website, is it useful or just another waste of time? It is time to share your views folks with everyone!

Renren: Chinese Facebook with over 160 million users

“Facebook me!” – these two words have always been around since Facebook came to inception. The World has been Facebooking each other since then, however there is a quite different story going around in China. Renren.com –  a website in China which means “everyone” is hitting the streets there with more than 160 million registered users and is almost similar to Facebook in terms of functions and features, however it is tailored for users in the Chinese market.

It is also in the news that Renren.com which started in 2005 is even preparing for a Public issue while Facebook’s present valuation is estimated at US$ 63 billion. The Chinese Facebook is clearly taking an advantage of the International restrictions in place in China which has even resulted in a huge growth in its advertising sales.

A Chinese user quotes – “I use Renren to connect to my Chinese friends and Facebook for International news and information”.

We all are not yet sure when Facebook is going to enter the Chinese space or if Renren is going to be the next Facebook connecting the Chinese masses, but the website is definitely giving a chance to the Chinese to say – “Renren me!” 🙂

[ThankYouTutor] Make Money by taking Online tuitions!

The first time I went for my tuition classes was the time when I was in standard 11th. It used to be 6 in the morning and in that extreme cold, I used to visit our professor with my legs shaking. And it is today when the internet has the solution even to this (Well, I didn’t mean my shaking legs :P).

Ofcourse with rapid Internet growth across the World, people are more than just connected but even sharing emotions through technology. In this league what comes next is Desktop sharing technology, which you might have heard of. Internet users are now even able to view each other’s desktop in a real-time view, even light pens are being since long to draw images and bring them to life in the Digital universe.

Don’t mind… I am just coming to the topic only! ThankyouTutor is a website which allows you to get tuitions for any or all of your subjects for a very small fee. It even let you prepare for your exams and take Live classes online directly from any tutor in any part of the World. That’s the real power of Internet, isn’t?

Reasons I recommend ThankyouTutor!

  1. One of my closest friends have used this website personally and even taken few LIVE tuition sessions for few kids in Mexico and Canada right here from Pune, India.
  2. You can take lessons in morning or even at night in the US just sitting at your own place.
  3. There are two formats you can take tuitions on – Get your assignments completed with detailed explanation or just get Live Sessions. Taking Live sessions will need you to download a Desktop application (probably made in Java!) which will let you have fun :), just kidding, I mean will let you get Live tuition sessions.
  4. Getting help for your assignments is easy as there are several options. You can email them with your assignment and time to submit, you can even ask them to call back or directly call and ask. However, you can get to know the exact fee for any assignment(s) or Live session only after inquiring.

I guess it is more than enough description for you folks! Rest you can check yourself using the link provided. Drop in your comments and valuable suggestions, otherwise… (obviously I can’t do anything :P)!

KeepMeOut – Simple tool to manage online addiction

We are often addicted to certain sites. For me I guess it is Facebook and YouTube. I have links to them on my bookmark and sometimes end up on those websites far more than I should be. 😛

If you are someone like me, who works on the internet and will have access to all sites which might be considered slightly unproductive, you should look up KeepMeOut.

KeepMeOut Features

  • Just visit the website, type in the URL of the website you want to avoid visiting.
  • The default time it blocks a website is 60 minutes but I could customize to less or more.
  • After this, we get a URL. Just drag and drop it to your bookmarks. Best to rename it to the name of the website.
  • Now once you click on the bookmark, it will not allow you to visit that website for the time you have set for yourself.

I found this quite useful to bring about some self-discipline in my surfing habits. We can still visit the website we want from a different browser or even typing in the URL in the address bar. It is not really a blocking tool but more like a self-help tool.

DoneCal – Simple and Clean Online Calendar tool

When it comes to scheduling things or setting up reminders, I use Google Calendar. Google Calendar is an awesome service but like all things awesome, it is a little complicated. The huge number of options are a little over-whelming for people new to Google Calendar.

DoneCal has a simpler interface and is easier to manage and track events.

Features of DoneCal

  • To use DoneCal, I needed to register to the website. A good feature is that I could simply sign-in with my Google account.
  • The calendar can be used as a time-sheet to clock hours of work. We can then download the full report in an Excel or CSV file.
  • Just create a schedule of events in the calendar and we can share the calendar with a URL. People with the URL can only view the calendar but not edit it.
  • There is bookmarklet which makes it compatible with all browsers. 🙂

I found DoneCal very useful if you are about to create an itinerary and then send the link to people who might want it. This is perfect when you might be dealing with people who are not always savvy with Google Calendar or iCal. Try out DoneCal and do let me know your views through comments.

Caption It – Write your own funny captions on online photos!

One of the best things about images having funny captions, is that it ends up saying something that is witty, sarcastic and funny. Most times we come across such images on blogs and end up sharing these captioned photos on Twitter and Facebook. MSN Caption It allows people to go ahead and put up captions to images online. The best part is others can vote for the best caption.

MSN Caption It Features

  • To leave captions on the images, we need to register with the website and start leaving captions on various images. Do not worry, there is no need for a Live ID to register.
  • I could also go ahead and vote on the captions. Voting does not require registration. 😉
  • Select a section and we get images with the option to write captions to them. When images are shown the latest captions can also be seen.
  • Along with captions to images, users can also use Blurb It to leave interesting messages on what two people are thinking or saying in an image.

These images are sourced from MSN and at the moment, I did not see any choice for people to upload their own images for writing captions. But I think it will be only a matter of time when someone gets all our Facebook friends to leave captions on our images from personal albums.

Do try out MSN Caption It and let me know if this is going to become the next addictive thing? Do drop in your comments.

Passplex: Generate strong passwords randomly

If you think you are not good at creating passwords and you still need a password which should be strong enough to be hacked, then Passplex can come to your rescue. Using Passplex is extremely easy and fast as well. In fact, you don’t even need to enter anything to get started.

There are three options a user can select:

  • Complexity: Complexity levels between 1 and 5 are available while the default is 3. This decides how complex the passwords needs to be.
  • The user can select whether to include only Numbers or Symbols, or both. This choice can widely change the strength index of the password.

You can even see the strength meter to select the best suitable password for yourself. Officially they have served 36864 till date. Do let me know if you think this can be of help in password selection. Keep in touch, keep Passplexing.. 🙂
