Last Pass- Your Password Manager

I read Aditya’s post a few days back where he told how to retrieve a lost password. Though that is very helpful if you lost your password, but wouldn’t it be better if you could store your password in a secure place so that you don’t ever lose it ? After all Prevention Is Better Than Cure ;).

With increasing number of web profiles like facebook, MySpace, orkut, flickr, yahoo, Gmail, LinkedIn, blah blah blah..forgetting passwords is a very common scenario. What do you do in such a case (apart from scratching your head lol !!) ? Well you might try “forgot password” link provided in the website. But what if you forgot your username as well ? Tricky situation, isn’t it ? The only possible solution you can think of is either to stop using that site or create a new account (which means losing all the information that was stored in the previous account).

Last Pass comes handy in such situations.

So what Is this Last Pass?

Last Pass is an online password manager that stores all your usernames and passwords in an encrypted form. And did I tell you it’s free !! (They offer a premium version with some extra features but free version has all the features you can think of).

How can I trust someone with my passwords?

I know you must be skeptical about storing your passwords- after all how can you trust someone with your sensitive data. Last Pass got featured in the PC World’s 100 Best Products of 2009, featured in The Economist (18th Dec. 2009) and got praised by many leading tech magazines. This itself vouches for its credibility. Also all your passwords are stored in an encrypted form locally on your system (using AES-256 encryption which is accepted by US government for protecting top secret data) which means that no one (not even the people at Last Pass) can access your passwords. Only you can unlock them by using your master password.

Hey But I Don’t Use Windows. Will it support my OS?

LastPass supports Mac OS X, Linux,Solaris, BSD, Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7, etc.

It works with IE, Mozilla, Firefox, Chrome, Safari. What’s more it is also compatible with iphone, blackberry etc.

But what if the server is down ?

Last Pass has two data centers in two countries so chances of server being down are pretty low. But even if such a situation arises, you can still have access to all your passwords through Last Pass Plug-in (I’ll tell about it in detail later in this post).

So how do I get started ?

Now that we have cleared all the doubts (hopefully !!), let’s see how to start using Last Pass.

First of all you’ll need to create an account on last pass. For this go to www.lastpass.com and click on Download LastPass

last pass

You’ll be redirected to a page where you’ll have options to download various versions of LastPass depending on your operating system and browser.

last pass download

Once the exe file has been downloaded, run it. You will see step by step instruction to setup your account on last pass.

Step 1: This is the first step of installation. Check the “Install LastPass plug-in for Internet Explorer.”

step1

By installing a plug-in on your explorer, you can log-in to your last pass account without going to their site.

Step 2: Click on “create a new account” and then click on Next.

step2

In the next screen you’ll be asked to enter your email id and a password of your choice. This email id will be your login id and password will be your master password. This is the only password that you need to remember now, rest all passwords will be remembered by Last Pass. But if you forget this password, there is no way to retrieve it.

step2a

step2b

Step 3: In the next step you’ll be asked to import passwords stored on your browsers to Last Pass. This is optional step, but it is recommended to do so, because passwords stored by browsers are not secure.

step3

Step 4: Last Pass can fill online forms for you. If you want to enable this feature, proceed with this step. You’ll have to create different profiles for different type of forms, say one for bank account, another for online shopping and so on. Once you have created the profiles, next time when you’ll come across a website having a form, Last Pass will ask you which profile to use and based on your selection will fill the form automatically.

step4

Step 5: With that you are done with creating your account.

Seeing Last Pass In Action:

Now that we have configured our account let us see how last pass will work. When you’ll open your explorer, you’ll find last pass icon as shown below.

sample

Similar icon can be found in Chrome and Firefox when you download plug-in for them. As of now only beta version of Chrome supports last pass plug-in(known as extension in chrome).

Once you click on the icon, you’ll be asked to enter your email and password. When you successfully enter this information, the color of the icon will change to red.

sample screen2

You are now ready to use Last Pass. Open any site that requires login. If its login information is already present in Last Pass, it will automatically fill the details for you. If you have more than one account for that site, it will list down all login id’s and ask you which login detail to use. In case it doesn’t have the login info stored in its database (for instance, you are logging in for the first time), then it will capture the login information and prompt you to save it. If some day you decide to change login password for some site, it will detect the change made to the password and prompt you to save the new password.

Thus we come to an end to this long tutorial. I have been using Last Pass for more than a year now, and have not faced any problem till today. Do you use any password manager ? Share it with us here.

Open multiple search queries in one go

If you are a blogger one of your biggest resource is a search engine. Looking around for new tricks to webs services or even something as simple as how posts within your blog can be looked with different search engines. We all use search engines and at times carry out multiple searches. It is a little difficult sometimes to keep track of the multiple searches or the queries you entered while carrying out a comprehensive search about a certain subject. I used Search Opener and found it a boon while carrying out multiple searches across different search engines.

open_multiple_search_queries1

Search Opener allows you to carry out different search queries across different search engines. It gave me two different types of options.

  • It allows me to enter 3-4 different search queries and open them in different tabs within the browser.
  • These tabs are opened within the same browser you are viewing the website.
  • It also allows you to use multiple search engines. It supports Yahoo, Bing, Ask and ofcourse Google.
  • In the above image you can see I typed in all the search queries and selected Google.
  • This means if I search for Devils Workshop and Facebooknol with Google and Bing being selected, I can at once open 4 tabs within the browser for both search queries with both engines.

This will be quite useful for people doing research and really looking to get deep into search results. I reviewed a similar sort of service called SearchZooka which allowed multiple searches. I admit that search opener has fewer options but it’s minimalistic look does make it a lot less confusing.

Let me know what you like about Search Opener through your comments.

Synchronize You Tube videos on different computers

Watching YouTube videos has been a great way for friend to wind down. At work there are also great tutorials and demos for almost everything on You Tube. For instance at rtCamp our new developers often end up spending their first couple of days watching video demos for getting started. It is a great way to learn but sometimes it has its disadvantages.

Having one screen play the video while 4-5 people try and squeeze into nooks and corners to get a better view. A way around this is usually to share the link with everyone and let them see the video in their own time. Sometimes that is not useful or wastes time as you cannot discuss the video immediately or at the same time.

sync_youtube_video

  • With Synch tube you can now have many computers view You Tube videos in a synchronised way.
  • Users can now create a room to synchronize the You tube video or can choose to enter a public room.
  • Once you create a room you are allowed to make it public or keep it private. You can share the link to this room with your friends and everyone can then watch the You Tube Videos in a synchronized way.
  • It also supports a chat client and you can chat with people you are viewing the synced video with.

So next time you think of sharing a video on youtube you can use SynchTube to watch the video in a synchronized way. Do try it out and drop in your comments to let me know what you think about it.

Chinese hackers target Indian government

A day after Google made public that they were under a well organized attack from Chinese hackers news has trickled in that certain Chinese hackers have targeted computers within the Government trying to snare many top level administrators. Apparently an email was sent to top level bureaucrats from a dormant email id. This allowed the hackers the opportunity to access a backdoor within the network for getting access to that computer’s hard disk.

According to the timing that these attacks coincided with the Copenhagen summit last year, there is a theory that Chinese hackers might have tried to get an idea of India’s stand before hand. The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed about the attack on systems but noted that computers with sensitive material are sanitized and do not have access to the Internet.

hackers

Why China?

A lot of experts are saying China has a long term plan to use its cyber hackers to control the internet or atleast develop the ability to cause great harm. I think that idea is a little over stretched.  China does have one of the most comprehensive system of monitoring and censoring content on the internet. It might soon have the highest number of Internet users but the content is very controlled. To acheive this sort of monitoring mechanism would need a huge number of hackers who are working round the clock trying to monitor the massive internet population.

This essentially gives some of these Chinese hackers an ability to be trying their hands at attacking systems and networks outside China. Whereas there is nothing wrong in being aware and vigilant about cyber security, I do not think it is correct to be too carried away with conspiracy theories that will soon start floating on the internet along with some parts of the print and television media.

Make unlimited free calls worldwide using Yahoo Messenger!

Update: Currently the service for free calls has been removed so the information in this post might not be entirely accurate. You might want to check this post on how to make free calls from your computer to any mobile phone.

Everyone must have heard of free calls between computers using softwares like Yahoo! Messenger, Skype and Google Talk. Now-a-days calls from mobile-to-computer using GPRS is also common using mobile applications like Fring, Nimbuzz, etc. This is a simple trick to make calls from computer to almost any mobile or landline phone to many countries. All you need is Yahoo! Messenger or Skype or any other calling application which allows paid calling, internet connection with fair speed, speakers and microphone.  1_1

How to make the free call?

The free call is provided by Free411. I will guide you through Yahoo! Messenger.

  1. Enter the number 1800-FREE-411 (1800-3733-411) where you enter the call number and make the call. This is a toll-free number.
  2. Wait for the call to connect. Once it connects, follow the voice instructions to reach the ‘Main Menu’. Say “Free Call” once Main Menu reaches.
  3. Once the system says ‘Dial the number’, dial the number using the dialpad in the international format.

2_2

Example, to make call to India, dial 91 followed by a landline or 10 digit mobile number like 919876543210.

That’s it! Your call will be connected… The call limitation is 5 minutes. But you can call again countless number of times!! Sometimes a 20 sec long ad will be played when the call gets connected. Just listen to what the IVR (Interactive Voice Recording) says and follow the instructions.

At times, the system remains busy.In such case, call again, and it will work 🙂 The procedure is same for Skype too.
This is tested and works in India. Try for different countries and enjoy free calling… 😀

Find interesting facts on any number [Fun]

I am going off topic as far as being techie is concerned but for maths lovers this website can be quite entertaining and interesting. This website is actually a created by a mathematician and a lot of research has gone into it where if you enter any number between 0 to 9999 you get properties of that number along with certain facts which are very unique to the number.

number_gossip

Number Gossip allows you to give some interesting details which includes even jokes used with that particular number. For instance when I entered the number 666 considering we call our website Devils Workshop. :-p
The results were quite a lot of fun. I got its various properties along with even a joke about the number 666 .

Here is another example of the results for the number 4523 and one of its rare properties comes up as Google. It’s defined as Google because of a unsual hiring ad regarding numbers Google would put up. 😉

number_gossip1

Unfortunately this website only supports numbers upto 9999 and not any more. But just the voluminous amount of information available on ten thousand numbers is quite worth it.

Go ahead and pass some of your time if you love numbers on Number Gossip. Even if you are good at Math, you will certainly learn a few new things!

10 things that impacted technology this decade

We have come to the last couple of days of the first decade of the 21st century. So I thought I would write about the top ten tech moments or products in the last 10 years. This is mainly a personal opinion on products, services that have impacted the tech market in a positive way.

Ipod#1. The iPod: This one is something that actually saved Apple from drowning. It was released in the year 2001 and immediately caught the imagination of almost everyone who wanted to listen to music. Apple was a company at the edge of bankruptcy making losses. The iPod and its craze changed everything. The fall out was fantastic for Apple as ironically a lot of people looked at buying Macs because of its popularity and reputation gained thanks to the iPod. If Apple is at the helm of smart phone technology with their iPhone its because of the legacy started with iPod early in the decade.

Google_adwords#2. Google AdWords: Google search engine was a winning product but how to monetize it? In the year 2000 Google launched Adwords. This revolutionized making money online. The idea of getting people to pay for search listings was not a new one but Google did what no one did and that was it let the market decide what it wanted to pay for every click on a AdWord. An exstension of AdWords was AdSense which allowed the Blogging industry to become money earners. Even Devils Workshop is today running because AdSense and hence it is impossible to not include it as a positive impact for this decade in the tech world. It is estimated Google makes over $5 billion from AdSense revenues.

Wordpress#3. WordPress: This is what a huge majority of bloggers in the world use for designing their blogs. You might be suprised but a lot of websites which are not necessarily blogs are also designed with WordPress. An open source blog publishing application, WordPress started gaining momentum from development and design ideas coming from ground up. It was first released in 2003 and since then it has set the internet on fire with over 200 million websites using WordPress.

Wikipedia#4. Wikipedia: I did grow up in the pre-wikipedia age where if you had to look up information on the Bengal Tiger or India’s population you had to refer to either the Worldbook encyclopedia or Britanica Encyclopedia. Now you just search for at Wikipedia. With over 14 million articles in various languages it has become a must for anyone searching for information on almost anything. The online encyclopedia is written by people like you and me on subjects that we know about.

Social_networking#5. Social Networking: I doubt anyone reading this is not listed on some social networking website or the other. It all started with connecting with old school friends and led to being a phenomenon where not we use social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace to do a host of things which includes searching for jobs, clients, technology and lately gaming. There is no denying that the last 10 years the internet has shifted focus to social networks a lot more than ever before.

YouTube#6. You Tube: Ten years ago if we had to catch a music video or look up a news clip you had to wait for it to reappear on the television tube. Today we look them up on You Tube. It was created in 2005 and became hugely popular and soon after Google bought it. You Tube is massive for the internet and it has not been completely monetized. It has been used for commercial campaigns to political messages and it has led to the under 30 population being called the YouTube generation.

unlimited_storage_email#7. Unlimited Email storage: Back in 2000 we had Hotmail give us 2 MB inbox storage space. Most of us were overjoyed when Indiatimes had offered 10 MB space with its email service. Gmail entered the market with the promise that you do not have to manage your storage space. This had a domino effect and any serious player in the Email service will not dream of offering you anything but unlimited storage. Instead of 10 MB total storage space within years we have moved to 10 MB limit for attachments.

blackberry#8. Blackberry: Research in Motion (RIM) released BlackBerry smartphone and we had the birth of the smart phone. It basically replaced the need for a computer to check emails and surf the net. You can do that with your phone. With the ever increasing closing of the gap between a netbook and a smart phone we should soon see smartphones making netbooks obsolete. All this will be probably with a huge thanks to the rise of the BlackBerry in this decade.

Google_maps#9.Google Maps: Finding a place or getting driving directions has become revolutionized with Google Maps. It was not that there were no previous endevours in mapping the world but Google Maps allowed you to list your business on their maps which transformed Google Maps into a ever evolving interface which is not extensively used. With Google Earth it gets us satellite pictures on our computers which was surely not something people thought possible 10 years ago.

open_source#10. Rise of Open Source: The rise of Open Source technology has really captured the imagination and come out of the dark alleys where products and applications were used only by developers and people in the know. The dominance of Microsoft has still to be shaken in the OS market but when it comes to applications open source technologies are surely taking over. It also has now got people understanding the concept that Open Source does not mean free software but freedom from control of software development.

I guess a common thread between almost all the products and services being successful has been making technology more widespread and users getting to interact with other users. Most successful companies instead of becoming technology developers are making the transition to becoming technology market places for developers and users to interface. Hope you agree with my list and if I have missed out on anything do let me know through your comments.

I conclude the post by wishing you all a happy and safe New Year from all of us at rtBlogs.

Youtube url shortner

I have to say, this year is going to be the year of url shortners! With giants like google and facebook entering the url shortening business, now it’s the turn of youtube to join the caravan. Youtube has hit the internet with it’s new url shortner called [Youtu.be].u

The only difference would be that the youtube url shortening service will exclusively be for the youtube videos. With the introduction of this new service, there will be more room for developers to show their imagination. The can now get custom urls for thumbnails, embedded videos and much more.

Now, to use this new url shortening service from youtube, take any youtube video url

“for example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxxx”

and replace the

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=” part with “http://youtu.be/”.

Your youtube urls will automatically be shortened and the new link will be redirected to the original video.

I wonder, if this will turn other video sites like metacafe etc. to launch their own url shortener! Only time will tell. 🙂

Recover all your google accounts passwords

Can you imagine life without google talk, picassa or gmail notifier? In these times, a one minute outrage of google services results in panic all over the internet. People across the globe, rely on the google services for their day to day internet activities. Google has provided us with many useful utilities. But all these utilities work from a single encrypted system on your local computer so that you don’t have to enter your username and password everytime you login to any of the following services:

  • Google Talk
  • Google Picassa
  • Google Desktop Seach
  • Gmail Notifier
  • Internet Explorer (all versions from 4 to 8)
  • Google Chrome

But, imagine the case, if you forget the password of your main account. All these services will be locked out and your life would definitely be miserable. To make you safe and happy, there is an application which recovers all your locally stored google account passwords for these services. The application is called GooglePasswordDecryptor, and can be downloaded from here

How it works:

GooglePasswordDecryptor works on the principle that all the google services use a central encrypted database on your computer to fetch your username and password everytime you sign in to these services. Now, it uses different techniques to decrypt these stored passwords to plain text and present them before you in a window

Following is a screenshot of GooglePasswordDecryptor in action:
