Now create your own Favicon without using Favicon.cc!

faviconIn one of my earlier posts, I had talked about what a Favion is and how you can create a Favicon using Favicon.cc. I had also written that there are various ways through which you can create a Favicon and Favicon.cc is just one of them.

I was reading a recent comment on the post and felt that I should also be sharing with you some other, easy ways for creating Favicons.

Primarily there are two ways you can create a Favicon:

  1. By using any online service
  2. By using a desktop software

Online Services

Here is the list of some free and easy to use online services by which you can create your own Favicon.

Step 1: Open the image in Photoshop.

Step3: Change image size to 16*16 pixels from Image > Image Size

Step 4: Save the file as Windows Icon file by selecting the related option from “Save As” dialogue box

Step 4: In case you do not see the related option, probably you need to add support for “.ICO” in Plug-Ins>File formats directory of the Photoshop installation directory.

  1. The site has an account management system where you could make changes to your email address in case the need arises.
  2. Try and use an email address that you think you’d be using for a long period of time.

Private letters Vs. Public letters?

While sending yourself a letter, you will be asked to choose whether you want this letter to be private or public.

  • If you choose “private”, then your letter will not be disclosed to anyone.
  • If you choose “public, but anonymous”, then it will be included in the public letters section on the website, so that others could come and read them too.
  • In both the cases, your email address will not be disclosed.

Till now, some 767,886 letters have been written to the future and the number is increasing by the day… letters that are fun, silly, hilarious, serious, or even heartbreaking. How WordPress changed my blogging career?

Blogger vs wordpressIf you are a regular reader of Devils Workshop, then you must be aware of the post written by Rahul on how to migrate a blog from Blogger to WordPress without losing Google juice. It was my symposiumz blog that I used for writing the post.

If anyone had asked me what was the best decision that you made in your blogging career, then I would definitely say choosing “WordPress“!

From Blogger to WordPress: Comparing the Stats

Visitors:

Earlier, when my site was in Blogger, it used to have around 200 visitors per day(max). The page hits were so low that sometimes it would make me think that “Blogging is not for me”. But now, after shifting to WordPress, the graph is just increasing. The minimum visitor count per day I got till now was only 1.5k or so.

Page  views:

The same story is with the number of page views. If there are more visitors, then automatically your page views would increase. I remember asking Rahul during the migration process “What do you feel about my site? It gets around 15k page views per month.” He replied back saying, it is quite decent (I knew it was not) and it should increase constantly, which is a healthy factor for any site. But now, I get 15k page views, in 2 days.

Search engine visitors:

The number of visitors coming from search engines (mainly Google) were only 20-50 when I was in Blogger. But, now I get more than 1k queries per day. For some of the keywords, my site shows on the first page in Google after this migration.

Alexa ranking:

Symposiumz ranking was around 7 lakh when it was in Blogger. Now, it is about to touch 1lakh soon. But the Google page rank doesn’t seem to have changed much. May be it takes some time.

RSS readers:

If I remember correctly, my RSS feed count was close to 200 in Blogger. But now, it is about to cross 3k. I think, that would be a nice figure for any site.

Site reach:

Earlier, my site got visitors only from Chennai. Now, it has slowly expanded and I can see the patches spreading all over India in my analytics account.

Adsense revenue:

It took nearly 9 months to get my first cheque from Adsense. But now, I get a check every month. You could calculate the minimum amount I could earn from that. 😉

All these things happened within a minimum span of 3 months. It is off season for my site and the visitor count has reduced to some amount. But WordPress bought a big change in my stats in the past few months. Moreover, WordPress is so customizable that you will feel the difference and you wouldnt regret migrating. If you are new to blogging, I would strongly recommend you to start your blogging career with WordPress.

And again, thanks Rahul for all your help.

How to avoid Google from banning your website?

Google BanThe saddest day for a webmaster is the day you wake up and find that your website isn’t showing anymore in Google… that you have been a victim of a Google Ban.

This is the worst thing that can happen to your website, especially if you are running a business or a blog through your site.

How can I find out if my site is banned by Google?

To know this, use this code:

site: www.yoursite.com

(replace www.yoursite.com with the domain name of the site you think may be banned)

And, if you see no results on your site then maybe, it is banned by Google, or the robots.txt file is bad, or you haven’t submitted your site to Google.

See that your Robots.txt file doesn’t contain the code below:

<

p style=”text-align: left;padding-left: 30px”>User-agent: *
Disallow: /

<

p style=”text-align: left”>Don’t use “Disallow: /” just replace “/” with the directory (Eg: “Disallow: /Personal” ) you want Google to not index.
If you follow this, your site will be again listed in Google, if not, it may be banned.

Here is a list of ways by which you can keep your website in Google’s good books:

  • Up-time: Make sure you have the best up-time possible for your website. This means you must have reliable web hosting. If Google visits your website and it is not up, you may risk Google banning your site.
  • Spam: It is the thing which no search engine loves. So don’t use spamming techniques to promote your website. This will almost definitely lead to condemnation of your website for at least 6 months. Never use “black hat” methods like doorways, hidden text or cloaking. You are only setting yourself up for disaster.
  • Plagiarism: Make sure your content is original and relevant. Websites that duplicate content are punished with lower rankings and even bans. Your content should always be made for human consumption and relate to your website’s theme.
  • Linking: Linking is a two way street. Not only should the links going out of your website be quality, but be certain that the links that lead to your website are from Google respected locations as well. Avoid link farms and any paid linking service. Also, excessive linking is a red flag for Google. When you add internal links on your own sites, make sure you do it in moderation and with purposeful intent.
  • Cleanliness: Be sure your site is Google friendly. Build your website so that Google is able to index every page. Include a sitemap. Be sure all your pages are working and that there are no broken links.

Don’t try to fool Google with tricky tactics. The price you will pay is far worse than the effort it takes to do things the right way!

Making Animation Your Career: A Simple Guide

As discussed in my previous post, there are 4 basic types of animation techniques, namely: 2d Traditional (Cel), 2d Computer Generated, Stop Motion and 3d Animation.

All 4 require some basic common skill set but differ slightly when it comes to the actual Production stage.

Typical stages of any animation development are:

    Development -> Pre-production -> Production -> Post production

Brief description of each stage and career opportunities in each are given below:

    Development:

Development mainly involves concept / idea development and identifying the target market. Other commercial aspects are also to be considered. Getting sponsors, arranging finances  etc are also part of this stage.

Job titles can be likes of Director and Producers.

    Pre- production:

This involves making the idea more well defined into a script or a story board. This may also involve some background work , layout design etc.

Job titles can be likes of Production designer, Art director, Character/ Prop/  Background designer, Story board supervisor / artist , Layout supervisor/ artist, etc

    Production:

The production stage is where there is most variation between the different animation forms.  This is the stage where actual work takes place.

In 2D drawn animation, it involves drawing, cleaning up inking and painting drawings, scanning and digitizing drawings, and positioning the images into animation sequences.

In 2D computer animation it involves composing and colouring digital drawings, and positioning the images into animation sequences.

Job titles can be likes of Animation director, Lead / Assistant/ Trainee / Junior animator, Runner, etc.

In Stop Frame animation it involves building the sets and puppets or models, creating armatures and rigging the models so that the animators can move them, dressing the sets and setting up cameras and lights and also operating the cameras to capture the animators adjustments.

For Stop Motion Animation, there are some additional type of career opportunities like:

Model maker / Artist / Team lead, Director of photography, Still photographer, Motion Control Operator, Lighting, Camera, etc.

In 3D animation it involves a very wide range of activities from modeling the characters to lighting the set to actually animating the characters. As opposed to 2D animation where character is important, in 3D animation its the sequence of events / scenes that is more important.

Some of the special jobs in 3D animation area are:

Visual Effects (VFX) Supervisor, CG  Supervisor, Fur/Feathers FX Artist , Shading/Texture Supervisor, Texture Artist/Texture Painter, Rigging Supevisor, rigger, Rendering Supervisor , Lead Animator (Supervising Animator), Cloth Simulation FX Artist , Water FX Artist, 3D tracker / mover, Lighting Supervisor , Rendering Supervisor, renderer, Systems Administrator and IT support, etc.

    Post production

Post production stage is like a assembly stage for a car manufacturing. Here, all the pieces come together, edited, given finishing touches. The out put is then converted to required format like a film, DVD, CD etc.

Job titles can be likes of Head of Compositing, Chief / Assistant editor, Compositor etc.

Augmented Virtual Reality… Closer than you think!

Every one loves talking and reading about VR (virtual reality) but few think that it can be realized within next few years. Well, the good news is, it is already at a stage where people can benefit from it right away… here’s the concept.

It’s not just VR but actually AR or augmented reality, i.e VR overlays on real time images.

    Intrigued!? Read on…

What you need is a mobile phone with:

    • A good quality camera
    • Accelerometer (like iPhone or G1)
    • GPS enabled
    • WiFi, 3G , GRPS (any form of internet connection)

    Here is what to do:

When the phone camera will point at some popular place (say, Taj Mahal or Red Fort), the software in the phone will detect the direction / orientation (using accelerometer API), calculate the place on earth (using GPS and Google maps via internet). There can be a database like Wikipedia which can provide information about that place overlayed (semi transparent layer) on the phone screen. So when you move the camera, you can actually see the details of the popular buildings you are shooting overlayed with realtime information.

There are a few applications (for iPhone and G1) that are trying to achieve this but are in their infacy. But, within a few years such type of AR (augumented reality) could be a common feature of any smart phone.
