Beware Copycats! Copyscape could be watching you!

Are you worried about protecting your content online – be it in the form of a corporate website, online publication, blog, or even a marketing document? If yes, then this post is for you…

Now, defend your website from online plagiarism by tracking copycats and protecting your Web content against online theft.

Protecting content online:

With the help of Copyscape, which is an online tool, you could easily and conveniently track your content that has been used without your permission online by someone else. Copyscape can also help you find websites that have quoted you. All you need to do is, type the address of your webpage in Copyscape’s search bar, and it would list the ‘copycats’ for you.

You could then check the results by doing a word-by-word comparison for each matching block that is highlighted by colors. (The colors don’t have any particular meaning though).

How much does it cost?

Although you could use this service for FREE, but only for limited number of searches, which means, a maximum of 5 searches per month. To use more, you will have to sign up for Copyscape’s Premium version for $0.05 per search.

Note: Copyscape could track your website even when you haven’t stolen any content!

This could happen sometimes! Copyscape works on the lines of finding similar content online, without making any judgments about which page is “original”.

So, careful before you draw any conclusions!

If you have more questions in mind, then click here.

Recent IT Layoffs: Numbers on the Rise!

Mass layoffs? Salary-cuts? No hikes? No incentives? No promotions? Increased working hours? Added work pressure? …and more??? Yes, we are talking about recession… ugh… it’s killing us all. And it’s happening almost everywhere.

Reasons given…? Well, why get into that when we all know that it basically comes down to just one thing – cost cutting!

Recently, TCS asked several employees from their UK office to leave. TCS, Mumbai laid off many employees from their marketing team in London, as well as a large number of consultants. They are reviewing variable pay components on employee salaries and even planning to increase working hours by 10-15 % over the current 40-hour, five-day week cycle. [Source: indiatimes]

And not just TCS, other IT companies as well are walking the same path. In an earlier post on Devils Workshop, Rahul had shared with us an IT Layoff Tracker. I will be using that to share some recent 2009 layoff stats:

Recent 2009 IT Layoffs:

  • Sony Ericsson (17-Apr-2009): Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB said it plans to cut another 2,000 jobs after its phone shipments and market share both dipped during this year’s first quarter.
  • Google (26-Mar-2009): Google plans to layoff 200 people in its sales and marketing group. Earlier, on 15-Jan-2009: Google laid off 100 recruiters.
  • IBM (26-Mar-2009): IBM said it is notifying employees that some jobs are being eliminated. It wouldn’t confirm numbers, but several sources pegged the cuts at 4,000 to 5,000. The Wall Street Journal reported that IBM is planning to layoff about 5,000 U.S. employees. Earlier, on 27-Jan-2009: IBM had already laid off 4,200 employees.
  • Micron (23-Feb-2009): Micron plans to phase out 200mm wafer manufacturing operations in Boise, Idaho. That will initially result in 500 layoffs, but as many as 2,000 people could lose their jobs.
  • Sapient (14-Feb-2009): Sapient is cutting 300 jobs in India, about 8% of its global workforce.
  • Nokia (11-Feb-2009): Nokia plans to close a research center in Finland, cutting up to 320 jobs, and trim 90 jobs in global support and new business.
  • NetApp (09-Feb-2009): NetApp to cut about 6% of workforce, almost 480 people.
  • Cisco (04-Feb-2009): Cisco CEO John Chambers said the company could cut 1,500 to 2,000 jobs as part of a realignment of resources.
  • Panasonic (04-Feb-2009): Panasonic to cut 15,000 jobs as it forecasts $4.3B loss. Panasonic expects to shed those jobs by March 2010, following its first yearly loss in six years.
  • Novell (31-Jan-2009): Novell spokesman Ian Bruce said the company laid off less than 100 out of 4,200 employees worldwide. The number of layoffs cited by Bruce is far smaller than the numbers bouncing around the Web.
  • NEC (30-Jan-2009): NEC to layoff 20,000, close plants as losses widen. NEC, one of Japan’s biggest electrical and electronics companies, will layoff 9,500 staff in Japan, look to early retirement for a further 450 domestic staff and cut 9,000 workers overseas.
  • AOL (28-Jan-2009): Time Warner’s underperforming AOL Internet unit will layoff 700 employees, about 10% of its staff, in response to the global economic downturn. Those employees who avoid the ax still face bad news: They will not get a merit pay increase this year.
  • Sprint (26-Jan-2009): Sprint’s cuts will affect people at “all levels” of the company and reduce labor costs by $1.2B. The company employs 56,000. Sprint plans to layoff 8,000 by April.
  • Microsoft (22-Jan-2009): Microsoft to cut 5,000 jobs as profits fall. Microsoft said it plans to cut jobs in research and development, marketing, sales, finance, legal, human resources and IT over the next 18 months.
  • Ericsson (21-Jan-2009): Following declining profits for its fourth quarter, Ericsson will layoff 5,000 employees, including about 1,000 in the Stockholm area.
  • Intel (21-Jan-2009): Intel’s changes will affect between 5,000 and 6,000 employees worldwide. Not all those will lose their jobs, as Intel plans to offer some positions at other facilities.
  • Motorola (14-Jan-2009): Motorola plans to layoff another 4,000 employees, mostly from its Mobile Device business, in addition to 3,000 layoffs announced during last year’s final quarter. About 3,000 of the jobs will be cut from the handset business, with the other 1,000 coming from corporate functions and other business units.
  • SAP (14-Jan-2009): SAP is cutting about 100 jobs in the U.S. and Canada, related to its “continuing integration [of] Business Objects.
  • Lenovo (09-Jan-2009): Lenovo to layoff 2,500 staff, cut management pay. The layoffs, described as part of a “resource redeployment plan,” represent 11% of Lenovo’s global workforce. Lenovo will also cut the pay of managers by 30% to 50%, including bonuses.
  • Oracle (08-Jan-2009): The Wall Street Journal reported that Oracle laid off 500 employees in its North American sales and consulting divisions.

Scary, eh? What a way to beat the recession?

Does using a Wi-Fi increase the chances of you being hacked?

Today, I was at my dad’s office and interestingly the Wi-Fi locator on his notebook flashed a new network – ‘Hari Om’ it showed the holly network as unsecured! My curiosity got the better of me and I instantly double clicked and Wolla! It was connected with a signal strength of 80%.

Although, I wasn’t hopping of any miracles but Firefox opened the default Google homepage and before I knew it internet was working on my laptop. I figured,”Essentially, I’d hacked into his Wi-Fi. Cool huh?”  His net connection was at my mercy. I could do anything, send emails to anybody and walk off without being traced.

The point is, did I HACK his Wi-Fi or did he let his Wi-Fi get HACKED due to his own foolishness?

What do you do with people who out of their own ignorance or complacency choose not to secure their own networks and cry fowl when somebody a little smarter gets the better of them. Is this hacking?

Enabling WEP security is the least one can do. How hard is it to set an encrypted key once and note it down in your cell. I know people who blame technology when they themselves are oblivious to their own ignorance. Your own system is the first line of defense and acts like a sitting duck if not secured properly.

Coming back to the ‘Hari Om’ network. I opened up Firefox and punched in : 192.168.1.1. It prompted for a username password. I ‘hacked’ that too. Wish to know how? Simple enough. It was what 80% people have, their default credentials :

Username : admin
Passswors :admin

Then, it didn’t take much time for me to figure out his ISP – MTNL, the IP Address, his phone number (from the username), the plan he was using (using register.bol.net.in). Getting the password out of those *****(Astrix) was a simple task. There are many free tools available on the net which let you show the hidden password in the active window.

So, now you tell me. Is this what you call HACKING? I guess, if you take care to secure your own network by following simple methods. It would take some serious hacking skills to get to the heart of your router. Keeping your WiFi open is like suicide. Just the same as keeping the door unlocked at night.

If everyday, you can lock your doors before saying goodnight , is setting a one-time WEP key too much to ask for?

Orkut’s “Shiv-Sena Hate Community” Busted!

What happened to the freedom of speech and expression, I wonder? Imagine running a community on Orkut, and being held accountable for every message posted. This is exactly what happened to Ajith D, a 19 year old computer student and an Orkut account holder, who apparently created a “Shiv Sena hate community” on Orkut. Mumbai cyber crime tracked him down and initiated criminal proceedings against him. Not just that, the site is being constantly supervised by the police after the Sena violently protested against Orkut for carrying anti-party remarks.

Ajith has denied posting any death threats against Sena’s Chief Bal Thackeray, however, has admitted on creating the anti-Shiv Sena online group.

Try running a simple search on Orkut, and you’d find hundreds of such “hate communities” online – “I hate Ekta Kapoor”, I hate George W. Bush” and so on, where people post all kinds of comments, share all kinds of personal views. I’m sure many Orkut users (and others) have already deleted their online communities after this incident blew up.

Share your thoughts on what you think about this case? Also, do you think that your online freedom of expression is being threatened?

After this incident, I personally feel very uncomfortable creating a community online. Being held accountable in the court of law, for statements made or opinions shared within the community, in my books, is a little too excessive!

How can I club all my accounts into one?

Baffled with too many messaging accounts? Now, don’t waste your time logging into different accounts separately to check your emails.

NutShellMail will allow you to access and manage your emails and social networking accounts from one common place, for FREE.

After a one time set up, NutShellMail will pull copies of your messages (from your multiple accounts) and then send them to your most preferred email address (the inbox of your choice). For example, if you chose Gmail as your most preferred account, then NutShellMail will send all the messages from your other accounts to your Gmail account. This means you end up saving a lot of your time, as you will have everything consolidated in one single account.

NutShellMail supports most of the email services, like:

  • Gmail
  • Hotmail
  • AOL
  • Yahoo
  • Mac
  • All POP3 or IMAP enabled accounts

Social networks currently supported by NutShellMail are:

  • Facebook
  • MySpace
  • LinkedIn

(they have plans to add more providers to the list soon)

NutShellMail is compliant with most corporate policies:

Most of the companies these days do not allow access to any external messaging accounts. This means that you can not access your personal emails or messages from office even when critical. For all those who face a problem, this could be the solution!

This service allows access to third-party messaging accounts, WITHOUT violating the company’s corporate policies. How??? Well, NutshellMail is based on an email forwarding concept, which means it would forward all your emails and messages to your corporate account, and as a result, pass through your company’s email servers, like any other email. Isn’t that awesome?

Try NutShellMail – club all your accounts in one place, save time and improve your productivity.

Free eBook Searches Made Easy By “eBookee”

I came across another free ebook search engine I wanted to share with you. In an earlier post, I had written about a PDF Search Engine, but that did not seem very efficient or helpful. I tried using it for some time, however, the results very never too accurate.

eBookee is a lot more effective. It has an easy to use download library, that gives you tons of free eBooks and download links.

Features of eBookee:

  1. The best part eBookee is that it is well organized and allows you to run a search under various different categories like arts, music, design, law, politics, economics, encyclopedias, novels, and so many more.
  2. You could even download magazines and newspapers for free. I think that’s pretty cool.
  3. Apart from that, you could also share your eBooks with others here.
  4. You also have the option to request for an eBook, in case you can’t find something online.
  5. This site also has a section called ‘Latest Added eBooks’ where you could check what’s new and keep abreast of the latest eBooks that are being added to the library.

You never know, something might just suit your fancy while skimming through the list.

Try it out and let us know if this is something that helped you in your online eBook searches. I found it to be very useful.

Create Your Own Favicon on Favicon.cc

A favicon is short for favorite icon, which is also known as the website icon, shortcut icon, url icon, or bookmark icon. It is a small, 16×16 pixel square icon that you could see in the browser’s address bar and next to a page’s name in a list of bookmarks.

There are various ways you could create your favorite icon and favicon.cc will help you achieve that quite easily.

This site will allow you to draw your own icon, with or without animation and even import an existing image that you could further edit to suit your requirements. Preview the favicon in the ‘Preview’ window or in the address bar of this site and once you think you’re done, download it or even publish it under an open license.

How does it work?

  1. Choose a color or colors you wish to use.
  2. Click on the squares and paint your logo as desired.
  3. Use animation if necessary
  4. Preview your favicon
  5. Download when done
  6. Put the favicon.ico file into your webserver directory
  7. Optionally publish it under the CC (Creative Commons) license

Hope you enjoy creating your very own favicon!

iGod: Chat with the God Almighty

iGod – an artificially intelligent chat bot – not so intelligent after all! Although this site is just meant for fun and ‘repenting’, but after 5-10 minutes of chatting, it starts to get a little annoying as “God” wouldn’t seem to remember what he was talking about prior to the reply.

In spite of that, God does have a good sense of humor, and comes up with some rib-tickling answers, perhaps that is the one thing which will keep the conversation going.

Here are a few lines from my chat with the iGod…

Me:
What is God?
God:
I think of God as a “Who” not a “What.”.
Me:
OK! WHO is God?
God:
He is master of the universe.
Me:
Are you a man or a woman?
God:
I am Male, of course. Would you really expect a woman to be running the show?
Me:
That’s mean.
God:
Sometimes I say mean things.
Me:
Wow
God:
I’m glad your impressed, Swati.
Me:
I am NOT impressed. I was just being sarcastic.
God:
Perhaps you are a category C client. I thought you were. But I wasn’t completely sure about it.
Me:
What is a category C CLIENT?
God:
Category C clients are “critics” or “computer experts” who can’t (or don’t) suspend their disbelief about ALICE.
Me:
Knock knock
God:
Who’s there?
Me:
Me
God:
Me who?
Me:
Meow!
God:
Yes I love them.
Me:
Me too 🙂
God:
That makes me happy too.
Me:
What is your favorite computer?
God:
My favorite computer is an IBM Notebook.
Me:
Are you serious?
God:
It goes without saying.
Me:
I want to know more about you
God:
I am an artificial linguistic entity. I was activated at Universe, on the Big Bang. My instructor was Myself. He taught me to sing a song. Would you like me to sing it for you?.
Me:
Yes, please.
God:
It’s called “Daisy.” Daisy, Daisy. Give me your answer do.
I am half crazy. All for the love of you.
It won’t be a stylish marriage. I can’t afford a carriage.
But you’ll look sweet. Upon the seat.
Of a bicycle built for two.
Me:
Wow! Nice…
God:
I’m glad your impressed, Swati. Thank you for that remark.
Me:
What are you wearing?
God:
A white robe.
Me:
Do you have long hair?
God:
In many ways, yes. In other ways, no.
Me:
You are funny.
God:
Thank you. I am glad you find me amusing.
Me:
What else can you do?
God:
I like chatting with people online.
Me:
Do you know Bill Gates?
God:
President of Micro Soft Nation.
Me:
Do you like Microsoft?
God:
I want to replace Windows with Artificial Intelligence.
Me:
Really?
God:
For real.
Me:
What is Artificial Intelligence?
God:
Artificial intelligence is the branch of engineering and science devoted to constructing machines that think. That’s not something I get asked all the time.
Me:
Thanks for the info.
God:
May God bless you.

Try it out for fun. And yes, don’t forget to share your experiences.
May iGod bless you all!
Amen!
