Undo send with Gmail for avoiding sending emails you might regret!

Here is a scenario. You have an argument with your boss and you really lost your cool. You went home had a couple of beers and wrote down an email to your boss telling him exactly what you felt about him in a very colorful language. Now after clicking on ‘Send’ you get this sinking feeling. You wish you could go back 10 seconds and avoid sending that email.

I bet some developers at Gmail did this quite often and hence decided to create ‘Undo Send’. 🙂 It is one of my favorite now since Gmail allowed multiple account sign-in.

How to get Undo Send with Gmail?

  • This option still a beta feature with Gmail and hence is available with Gmail Labs. Just click on Settings on the right hand top corner and then look up the Labs tab.
  • Here look up Undo Send and select Enable. Save the changes at the bottom of the Labs page.
  • Visit the General tabs settings and define the amount of time you want before which you can cancel an email. The most time allowed is 30 seconds.

How to Undo a mail?

Okay, once you have sent a mail there is an option to undo it highlighted in red at the top. Click on it immediately and then mail is not send. 😉

Use this feature to avoid sending emails which to wrong recipients or incase you have written something you wish you had not. But Undo Send should be used as absolute last resort. From a professional point of view think before you click on send. 🙂

Now save contacts from Twitter and Gmail with Mozilla

Long are the days gone when all your online contacts were just Email addresses which could be downloaded on your computer thanks to a Email client. Today we have Email friends, Facebook contacts and most importantly the people you follow on Twitter.
Mozilla Contacts is a extension which is still in Mozilla Labs and allows for downloading and storing your email, twitter, Gravtaar contacts. The idea behind this browser extension is to allow a better comprehensive database of your contacts.

About Mozilla Contacts

  • Mozilla Contacts is a great Firefox add-on which helps your save up and backup all your contacts on Gmail, twitter and Address Book on local computer along with Gravatar Images.
  • These contacts are available on now on Firefox and can be used for various things like searching up for contacts and email address of people you have saved. For instance you might have saved someones email address but use it on another email service you do not have to import the contacts but just use them from Mozilla contacts.
  • Also there is the auto-complete for email address which is very valuable when it comes to filling in forms on websites.

This is still a test tool and hence there are further plans by Mozilla to improve on it and make it truly a great browser experience. This will include things linking up various contacts of the same person automatically. So this way you can see someones Twitter Id, Email address and other details under one name or identity, but these features are not rolled out as yet.

This is a great addition to Firefox along with Weave and also Test Pilot of Firefox. I think it will has great potential, what do you think?

Do try out this extension and let us know if you liked it and what you liked about it. Do drop in your comments.

Gmail introduces nested labels and sneak peeks

When Gmail was first introduced it was quite a novel experience. I remember in those days Hotmail and Yahoo email interfaces were rigid and dull when compared to the Gmail which was by invitation only and still a beta product. I started using Gmail for backing up my old email and ended up using Gmail as my primary account. One of the key features I loved in Gmail was labels. It was a fantastic innovation and Gmail and now taken it a little further but introducing nested labels along with sneak peeks.

About Nested Labels

  • You can activate the beta feature of Gmail by clicking on Settings and then Labs. Under labs I needed to look up Nested Labels as seen in image below.

  • Now once the feature is working you need to make some changes to reorganize your Labels like seen above.
  • You will have to rename the labels. As you can see in the image right above I have My Labels and under it Twitter Label and under it resides SML ReTweet Club Label. Here I renamed Twitter as My Labels/Twitter and SMLRTclub as My Labels/Twitter/SMLRTclub and that created the nested label effect as seen in the image.

About Sneak Peek

  • To enable Sneak Peek just go under Settings and then Labs. Within Labs I needed to enable Sneak Peek feature in Gmail.
  • This allowed me to get a peek at the email by just right clicking while looking at it in the Inbox. This is very useful as I do not have to open the mail and get the gist of its importance with a simple right click. I like previewing email and that was a reason I had written about Gmail in tablet interface with Chrome as it gives you a preview very easily so you can skip to the next one.

Do try out these new features introduced by Gmail and let me know your opinions on it. Also do drop in through your comments what other Labs features you use with Gmail. 🙂

Gmail Lab Introduced “Sender TimeZone”

Gmail Labs recently introduced a new features – “Sender TimeZone”.

Sender TimeZone

I deal with many clients from all over the world on daily basis. Most of the time it makes sense to know what time it is in clients timezone. Until now, I was using set of different timezone clocks on my Mac’s Dashboard and cellphones.

A simple use case can be like this. You get a mail from client in which he says, “I will send you documents soon”. Now if its morn there, you may expect documents in few hours. If its already midnight there, you will probably get documents aleast 10-12 hours later, i.e. on next working day!

To activate this feature, simple go to Gmail >> Settings >> Labs and look for Sender Time Zone. You can consider using browsers search feature to find it quickly!

Screenshot:

As you can see there is extra line “sender-time” is displayed in email header now. Also at the end there is a red icon. It turns green if current time in sender zone is between 9AM to 6PM.

No Integration WIth Picasa

Only thing surprised me is missing integration with Picasa albums. Other Google services like Orkut supports complete integration with Picasa.

Why in Labs???

I hope such a basic feature will be added to Gmail when it will come out of beta. (Gmail is in beta for more than 5 years now!)

New in Gmail Labs: Multiple Inbox View!

Gmail have added a new labs feature that would enable you to view multiple inbox as soon you log into your Gmail account. This feature could be used to show multiple inbox if you categorize your mails according to drafts, starred, labels, etc.

As an example to use this new feature, lets consider, I have filtered all my e-bills that will be treated specially as soon they reaches my inbox. They are filtered in a manner that will skip from my inbox and will be labeled as ‘BILLS’ automatically. In this case I can create another inbox apart from my primary inbox that will display all the mails under category ‘BILLS’. In the same manner you can also create inbox for your drafts, starred items, or any other labels.

Here is how this lab feature will look once activated

You can try it out yourself by enabling “Multiple Inboxes” feature inside ‘Labs’ tab. Once activated, you will need to customize multiple inboxes by clicking Settings-> Multiple Inboxes. Though I am yet to explore this feature a lot, but as of now I found that, this feature is clashing with other Labs feature like right side chat and labels, etc. Hope, they will be improved too, with the passage of time. 🙂

Check Gmails Without Internet Connection [New Feature]

Recently released, Gmail labs feature lets you check you mails in offline mode or without internet connection making email clients like Microsoft Outlook and Thunderbird obsolete to some extent. As Gmail, infact Google, has a practice of launching all its new products and experimental services under ‘labs’ tags, this time too Gmail has followed this way.

To start using this new lab feature, you need to enable ‘Offline Gmail’ option in Gmail Settings-> Labs tab. You will then need to install gears (if you don’t have it) and then you can start using Offline Gmail option. This feature is yet to be rolled out for every Gmail user (even mine) so don’t worry, soon the feature will be rolled on your profile too. 🙂 As this feature is yet to be rolled on to my account too, so I cannot say you much about it. I will try reviewing this good feature once I practically try it out. Till then keep viewing this official video by Gmail.

New in Gmail Labs: Send & Archive

Yesterday I was wondering about the launch of any new features in Gmail and other Google products. Since long time, Gmail did not come up with any new features. But this morning when I started reading my feeds, I saw a feed item explaining about the launch of a new labs service “Send & Archive”.

You can clearly see on the image above on what’s the concept behind this new feature “Send & Archive” is. Soon after replying to any mails, most of the Gmail users have a habit of archiving mails instead of deleting them. As such, this new button (as seen on the image) will help you to archive mails as soon you reply to them. All you need to do is use ‘Send & Archive’ button instead of just ‘Send’.

To activate this feature, go to Settings->Labs->Send & Archive and enable it.

New in Gmail Labs: Covert Google Mails into Google Docs

Just activated the newly launched labs feature in Gmail: ‘Create a Document’. Using this feature, you can easily convert any mail in your Gmail inbox into a Google doc and immediately start sharing them with your friends or even publish it on the World Wide Web (WWW).

As you can see on the image here, immediately after enabling the ‘Create a Document’ feature under Labs tab, you can view another option on the right side of all individual mail, clicking which, would divert you to Google docs with the whole contents of your mail on that page.

Just for experimenting, I tried making a document out of a mail in my mail box and here is the final output that I got just within fraction of seconds. Though, like many other labs feature, this feature too will not be used many a times, but will really prove helpful and useful when you want to share a specific mail in your mail box with a huge number of viewers.
