Ubuntu Server + CrashPlan + Backup + Remote Management using Mac

We already use rsanpshot for backups. But its always feel safe to have more than one kind of backup.

For other type of backup, we use Crashplan. They support all major platforms, provides many options and have their service decently priced. It will take a separate post to list down all things I like about Crashplan so lets get back to work here!

What I wanted to do:

  1. Run Crashplan on Ubuntu Headless Server.
  2. Manage it using Crashplan desktop software on my Mac.
I guess you can start remote X session or something like that on a Ubuntu server but that will be overkill for server. Specially when you can achieve above tasks in just 2 minutes using following commands.

Preparation

Crashplan on Ubuntu will need Java Runtime (JRE). Crashplan can install it itself but I prefer to have more control over which JRE I end up putting on our server. They have almost 5 version of JAVA for Ubuntu!

Anyway, just run following command as root user or with sudo access:

apt-get install openjdk-7-jre-headless

Install Crashplan

Next, we will install Crashplan directly.

Go to Crashplan site, select Linux version and copy-download link to grab latest Crashplan version. Crashplan 3.2.1 is latest as of July 2012.

Run following commands to download, uncompress and install CrashPlan or CrashPlan+

wget http://download.crashplan.com/installs/linux/install/CrashPlan/CrashPlan_3.2.1_Linux.tgz
tar -zxvf CrashPlan_3.2.1_Linux.tgz
cd CrashPlan-install
./install.sh

If you are using CrashPlan PRO, use following…

wget http://download.crashplan.com/installs/linux/install/CrashPlanPRO/CrashPlanPRO_3.5.3_Linux.tgz
tar -zxvf CrashPlanPRO_3.5.3_Linux.tgz
cd CrashPlanPRO-install
./install.sh

Installer will ask you for many questions. Just keep hitting enter keys. Defaults options are all good to go ahead!

At this point Crashplan is running on your Ubuntu Server but it’s not backing anything yet! We will use Crashplan’s Desktop edition for Mac to start backup.

Troubleshooting

If your installation ends with warning:

Your Linux system is currently configured to watch 8192 files in real time.
We recommend using a larger value; see the CrashPlan support site for details

Then you need to tweak sysctl file:

/etc/sysctl.d/custom.conf
ADVERTISEMENT

Add…

fs.inotify.max_user_watches=1048576

Save changes…

sysctl -p

Remote Management UI (using Mac)

Go to Crashplan’s site. This time download Crashplan for Mac & Install it.

If you have started Crashplan after installation, quit it.

Open terminal to edit Crashplan config file…

vim /Applications/CrashPlan.app/Contents/Resources/Java/conf/ui.properties

You can use any text-editor in case you don’e like Vim.

Find a line like below:

#servicePort=4243

Change it to:

servicePort=4200

Note that we have changed port number from 4243 to 4200 (in case you thought we just uncomment it!).

Save file. Exit vim.

Create SSH Tunnel from your mac to remote Ubuntu server using a command-like below:

ssh -L 4200:localhost:4243 username@hostname

Replace username and hostname with your a real username on your hostname. You can put your server IP address also.

After you run above command, you will be logged into a shell on your server. Keep it running as its connecting your desktop crashplan to your server crashplan!

Finally, you can start your Crashplan on Mac and configure backup for your Ubuntu Server!

In case you are already using Crashplan to manage your Mac’s local backup:

  • You will need to exit from shell (to break connection)
  • comment-out “servicePort” line in Crashplan config
  • Restrat Crashplan so it will work with Mac’s local config

There is no easy-way to switch between local & remote machines. (Atleast at the time of writing this…)

Automatically Store Photos From Your Camera to Dropbox [Desktop]

Dropbox is ramping up its service in a big way over the past few days. For starters it has a new design for it’s website. It also has introduced photo-storing features from mobile phones and PCs. These new options by Dropbox are very important as soon it will face competition from Google and Microsoft with their own cloud storage and sync services.

Considering a lot of photos are taken from mobile phones, this could a make or break feature for Dropbox. It helps that Dropbox is not part of a larger company, which allows a lot of third-party apps to work with it. For example you can read how I use Dropbox to automatically store images from my Facebook account.

Dropbox (Beta) on Desktops for Connected Devices

  • Download the latest beta version of Dropbox and install it.
  • Connect your digital camera or mobile phone which has your photos. The connected device can be opened on Auto-Play using Dropbox. So make sure on your Windows computer, Auto-play option is not disabled.

  • Click on the Dropbox option and all the photos from your camera are transferred onto a folder on dropbox.

  • This folder is usually named “Camera Uploads”. Once you update your photos, you will get 3GB additional space.

Saving Photos from your Android phone to Dropbox

If you have a Android phone, then download the Dropbox App on it. This will automatically sync your photos from your phone onto your Dropbox account.

Mac and Linux users can also avail of the latest beta build from the forum link below, to photo-storing is enabled on their computers too.

Apple does the impossible with MacBook Pro!

I did make a fuss about it and finally it happened. I am talking about the MacBook Pros launch which finally happened on 24th February and just as the rumor said, 5 models in three categories: 13”, 15” and 17” are launched.

DW newmacpro2

I did go through the technical sheet for each of them and found that while there are 2 sub-models each under 13” and the 15” models, the 17” model is unique. Each of them gives you 7 hours of un-interrupted battery even while wireless web surfing. I think writing anything about “Unibody” would not be justified, so I am including this video below.

Let me give you a brief idea about each of these models, after which I will explain you the wonder Apple has done this time!

13” MacBook Pro

(The cheapest sub-model available)

  • Processor: 2.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 / 3MB L3 cache
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics [384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared]
  • Memory: 4GB RAM, 320GB Hard-drive
ADVERTISEMENT

15” MacBook Pro

(The cheapest sub-model available in this range)

  • Processor: 2.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 / 6MB L3 cache
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics [384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared]. Additionally, AMD Radeon HD [256MB GDDR5 memory]
  • Memory: 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard-drive

17” MacBook Pro

  • Processor: 2.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 / 6MB L3 cache
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics [384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared]. Additionally, AMD Radeon HD [1GB GDDR5 memory]
  • Memory: 4GB RAM, 750GB Hard-drive

DW newmacpro1

Just look above at the text I have marked in bold, you will see AMD alongwith Intel in Graphics section. Apple has done the magic of bringing together two parallel technologies with automatic graphics switching. Though I myself own a PC, I have started falling in love with Apple, no doubt even you deserve to fall for it 😉

Apple pokes fun at Windows 7

appleWindows 7 is out and guess what Apple is also out with a new advertisement poking fun at Windows 7. They have released a series of ads making fun of Windows 7.

This particular ad is called “Broken Promises” which has a man called PC who resembles Bill Gates slightly and another man called Mac who are talking about Windows 7 and how it wont have any problems that previous Windows versions had.

I personally think such advertisements can be considered petty and it is not always a good strategy to make fun of your rivals. Every one knows Mac is better than most machines that run Windows but then Mac is also more expensive than 90% of the Machines that run Windows.

Early reports and reviews on Windows 7 give the impression that it is the best thing to come out of Microsoft but there is still one problem consumers will have. The migration from Windows XP to Windows 7 is being called very complicated and a test of patience and it seems that is what Apple will look to highlight.

I wonder what sort of advertisements would go out when Google launches its Chrome OS. 🙂

My experience: Moving from Windows to MAC

win-2-mac

Hey guys! I recently bought MAC mini, and in this article I would really like to share my experience with you in transfer from Windows to MAC. I personally used windows since the time that one use to feel ms paint is great. At that time I had never thought that  I will use MAC sometimes. I also tried Linux, but the joy and satisfaction MAC gave me, windows and Linux were nowhere.

It was an old MAC mini which gave me 10.3 installed in it, but no wonder I had an upgraded version which I immediately gave a run. It took about 35 to 40 min to complete the installation. Then I had 10.4 Tiger. Many people who own what some call “Series A” Mac Minis have complained about the Mini being slow when they upgraded to 10.4 Tiger, but for me it seemed faster than before. .After the initial sweep of the desktop I promptly loaded the Disk Utility and formatted my external HDD to HFS+ so I could store applications on it, instead of using the 40GB internal HDD. If I hadn’t read the external HDD’s formatting for Mac OS X user guide, I probably would have spent a while searching for how to format the HDD.

5 cool features of MAC

  • All the applications have a single shared tool bar. This was difficult for me to use. Reason being a long lasting use of windows.
  • MAC allows any one to surf and check their mails due to the feature of Guest Log-In Accounts.
  • Take advantage of Text Edit support for the Word 2007 and Open Document formats for reading and writing.
  • Save the configuration of all your open windows as a workspace. The location, window settings, and shell configurations of multiple windows can then be recalled instantly.
  • Get yourself a .Mac account and your System Preferences can stay in sync across all your Macs. No matter what Mac you use, you’ll feel right at home.

Some more features

  • Application installation: For the vast majority of applications this involves double clicking on a *.dmg file (Disk Image); Mac OS X mounts the image as a drive and then you just drag the Application to the Applications folder, or in my case onto my External HDD. Un-installing involved dragging the application from the Applications folder to the Trash can, I personally prefer this over the Windows way of installing and un-installing applications, but that may be personal preference.
  • Things I liked in MAC: Firstly a DVD Player. I understand that Microsoft can’t include a CSS decoder in Windows because all the DVD software producers like Cyber link, etc would claim unfair business practices because it was decreasing the number of possible customers for their products, kind of like what happened with WMP in the EU.

I don’t know why people say that windows are the best when they have so many options available. If I have an option between windows and Linux, I would surely go for Linux. Reason being open source and I will get lot of things to learn from it. I admit windows is a user friendly OS but people should also explore.

  • GUI transition, what are my thoughts on the GUI? well I like it, being brought up on Windows, KDE and such I personally would have preferred a start menu approach but that’s basically because that’s what I’m used to, but finding applications in Finder isn’t all that difficult to get used to. In terms of adapting to the GUI, I’ve begun to use keyboard shortcuts more and more, I personally thought the one buttoned mouse would be a hindrance to the OS overall usability but in fact it has little bearing on its usability in my opinion.

So far I haven’t really come across any media files or such that are un-usable, only media I can not access is Yahoo’s Video Launch service, but that’s due to it requiring Netscape 4.7 being installed when accessing using Mac OS X, which is a bit sad when you consider how old Netscape 4.7 is.

Overall I am enjoying MAC.

Google Latitude… Now on Orkut! A fun way to share your live location with friends!

I’m sure most of you already know about Google Latitude through an earlier post on Orkut Diary.

It’s a feature of Google Maps for mobile, as well as an iGoogle gadget, that lets you share your live location with your friends (if you chose to share it with them) and also see their locations (if they choose to share it with you).

This fun application is now on Orkut too!

And even better, it comes with some strict ‘privacy features’ which means not every Tom, Dick and Harry will get to see where you are. You never know who’d end up stocking you these days, right? 😛

Do watch a video on using Google Latitude privacy settings

Fun Features of Orkut’s Google Latitude:

  1. Share your location with friends on a map inside of Orkut.

  1. Use this application from your mobile and send your friends updates every now and then about where you are.

  2. Play catch (locate) me if you can 😛

So, try it out and tell your friends about this fun application on Orkut too!

Google Quick Search Box for Mac

Google released a new open source app for Mac Leopard users – Quick Search Box, based on interface and functionality of one of most famous app for Mac, Quicksilver.

Google Quick Search Box makes Google searching easier. By default, you have to press cmd key twice to bring search box on top. Apart from searching it provides many features of Quicksilver like launching apps, gadgets, address book contacts, opening files and folders in finder, etc.

Google Quick Search Box-2

Reason for similarity between Quicksilver and Google’s Quick Search Box is Nicholas Jitkoff, Quicksilver’s creator and now one of the developers of Quick Search Box.

Unique feature for Quick Search Box which I liked is integration with Google Docs and Picasa web. You can add any number of Google accounts whose docs and pics will be fetched into search results.

Two advanced features I like are:

  1. Type (TAB) to restrict your search to the selected results:
"wikipedia.com (TAB) toy" will return matches from wikipedia
  2. Type (TAB) to see actions for the selected results:
"CONTACTNAME (TAB) email" will show the "Email" action

You can control search places and other settings by visiting preferences.

Preferences - Google Quick Search Box

Those Mac users who finds Quicksilver more advanced, can enjoy this less simplified and enough powerful tool form Google. More information about this cool offering form Google can be found here.
