Get ready for a Face-phone

Talks about Facebook phone keep circulating. Just as we were almost sure that Facebook is not coming up with a mobile anytime soon bloomberg quoted that Facebook Inc. is working with mobile-handset manufacturer INQ Mobile Ltd. on two smartphones that may be carried by AT&T Inc., according to three people familiar with the matter.

Credit

One phone is said to have a QWERTY keypad and a touch screen while the other falls in the all touch category. Both may be launched in Europe in early 2011 and will be launched in USA by late 2011. Now I wonder why so and when will it be coming to India ? 🙂

According to an interview of Mark Zuckerberg with Techcrunch they aim to better integrate its services with existing mobile software on devices. Mark wants to create a social layer for everything and wants to go by Breadth first search.

The thing is why is Facebook trying to have a mobile of its own? What is the scope for a new mobile when already there are so many smart phones available all over. The social network is already on devices, including earlier INQ phones. What do you think? Do share your views with me.

Facebook Games Notifications get a makeover

With more than 500 million people using Facebook and 300 million logging in to Facebook daily, more than 200million people in a month  just login to play games only. Facebook people decided on some changes mainly focusing on making sure that content displays properly.

As reported by Allfacebook Friend spam over the past month have gone down 40 percent. Now mostly the complaints are about the games application on Facebook.  So the team had come up with new notification ideas. According to Mark people who play games for them there should be no restrictions on the content or time limit where as those who do not play games they should not be disturbed with repeated requests and most importantly those who do play on a daily basis for them the navigation should be very clear. 🙂

When I logged in today, I noticed some good changes  like:

Navigation is quite useful now 🙂 At the left hand side of my home page I can see all the notifications about the games or other applications and choose which one to open. And notice those blue bubbles instead of grey text.

The requests are better arranged now. As in the image below we can see that the notifications are arranged in a better way. For example if I am playing Sorority life and I have gift requests etc they are arranged under the heading Requests from Sorority life.

People can directly ignore a certain request and ignore all requests from that person. 🙂 Imagine not clicking repeatedly on ignore button. I am loving it !

People who do not play games are not bothered with the full detail of the game added to their updates. For example I do not play Farmville anymore  so I am just updated when a game is being added, instead of ongoing “XYZ  is building a barn in FarmVille!” type updates. 🙂 Wao what a relief, right?

Imagine when you are playing a game and asked to add a friend in between or send a gift. You just have to ignore the game altogether at that time. This new feature will be making viral loops more frictionless.

With all the above changes Facebook is definitely becoming cooler. 🙂 I hope they continue with the spirit and make it the best networking site in the world with no flaws at all. 😀 What do you think? Do share your views with me.

Facebook phone- Yes or No?

After conquering many fields like applications and games now Facebook is planning to build its phone or may be an Operating system. There are so many talks going on whether what is Facebook now up to? Some saying yes they are creating a phone and some just not agreeing with others.

As quoted by Techcrunch Facebook is definitely up to something. A phone exclusively for Facebook-sounds interesting. Facebook is very much denying the news. They replied to the Techcrunch news people but I wonder why did they even care to reply if the news was not true? May be they all want to keep the news a hush-hush and let it out as a surprise. But whatever they are thinking this news has surely spread like a fire. Several news resources like ABC news,CNET etc are mentioning about it. There have been more than 335,000 Google hits since 24 hours and still counting.

Credit

According to Techcrunch Joe Hewitt of Firefox fame and a creator of Facebook’s iPhone apps, and Matthew Papakipos, formerly of the Google Chrome OS project – are busy with the phone. 🙂

Whatever the truth I do want Facebook to come up with such a phone. Imagine the kind of revenue it is going to earn and the popularity. Imagine a smart phone being more than just a phone-rather Facebook phone!

Things Facebook should remember if they come up with a phone someday can be reasonable price, available all over the world and better privacy! What do you think about Facebook phone? Do share your vies with me.

Movie Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes get Facebook touch

Do you also surf several sites for movie reviews but at the end do not forget to ask your friend’s review? No matter what we do last word is of our friend’s. 🙂 While this morning I was going through Rotten tomatoes a famous movie review site, I had a totally different experience.

It was all personalised for me. 🙂 Rotten Tomatoes has integrated Facebook’s Instant Personalization so that you can get movie recommendations from your friends.

Now Rotten tomatoes show you the movie reviews according to your friends ‘Likes

It shows an option saying how many friends like a particular movie

It also tells you which of your friends want to watch a particular movie(so that if you are also inetersted in watching the same movie why not go together 😉 ) and which movies they like.

All in all it is a great way of having your friends reviews on the movies. What do you think? Feel free to share your views with me from your comments.

Ignore requests and report them as spam on Facebook

Whatever your privacy settings people still end up getting friend requests from unknown people. There are some people who keep on sending friend requests no matter how much you try to ignore them.

Earlier when I used to get friend requests I would just ignore the person I do not want to be friends with. Once a friend request is ignored there was no guarantee that the same person will not send me friend request again. Now, Facebook has changed the way it deals with spammers and repeated friend requests. Suppose a Spammer sends you a friend request and you do not want to add him/her to the friend list. You can report him as Spam or mark that you just do not know him. I did the same thing to a Spammer who was sending me friend requests repeatedly and I got this message on ignoring him: “You ignored a friend request from ‘ABC’. Report him for abuse or spam, or mark that you don’t know him” as shown in the image below:

Facebook is trying its level best to avoid Spammers and give its users a good Spam free Social Networking. After testing the Social CAPTCHA this can be a great feature to avoid all those spammers and people you want to ignore and stop getting requests from. 😉

Do not report someone as a spammer randomly, this is a power given to its users by Facebook and with great power comes great responsibility. 🙂 What do you think? Do share your thoughts on this one with your comments.

How cool is ‘Face Recognition’ by Facebook

Sharing photos and tagging people has always been my favourite part of Facebook. I love Facebook for this facility.

Some days before I noticed that Facebook is prompting photo’s on the right hand side column of my home page while I was going through the photo galleries. It says to tag the person in the photo. Facebook has released a new feature which pops up notifications as you browse through the photo galleries.

It is due to the Facebook’s recent integration of facial recognition software into their service. Earlier photo tagging did have its pitfalls as the tagged photo was not clear that is we could not make out the exact person as the tags were overlapping in many cases.

But just as I was getting used to it and enjoying this feature, I noticed something weird when I was going through the photo gallery.

Originally the image was like this as below:

I read on Allfacebook how Facebook is prompting friends to be tagged on photos which have no people in them.I saw something similar when I was prompted to tag some pictures of laptops.

The image above is the laptop of one of our rtCampers and see it is asking to tag a laptop’s image. It was so funny to see this image. 🙂 We at rtCamp love our gadgets but I am still not ready to make them human as Facebook suggests.
Where should I tag a person here ? Where is the so called ‘Face recognition’ here?

I just wonder why no matter how much Facebook try to be good and interesting something so weird and funny like this happens. Do they need a better set of developers or it is just that such things keep happening by chance? What do you think ? Feel free to write your views on this. 🙂

Facebook is testing Social Captcha

After trying to own the english words  ‘face’ and ‘book’ now Facebook is trying to own ‘social CAPTCHA‘. 🙂 You can read about the earlier patent at http://bit.ly/dqAwNx. The term CAPTCHA stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”.

You must have noticed when creating a new account on Facebook and Google you are given a random text including alphabets and numbers. You have to copy that text in the given box. That is Captcha and when you are asked to answer a  series of questions that is Social Captcha.

Captchas prevent spammers on the web. By displaying pictures and asking some information may be a better way to protect the site effectively.

What Facebook will do?

This has been in testing stages since long, now Facebook wants it to be a patent.

There are so many security threats on line.  Spamming is at its best so every one including  the other sites on line are trying their best to stop it.

Pros:

  • I think instead of random words people will find it interesting to give answers to the obvious questions.
  • When asked to identify any person on his/her friend list person would not fail until and unless it’s some random profile picture of a cat or flower. 🙂

Cons:

  • Ever imagine what will happen to a person who has a lot of friends and do not care to be really friends with all of them. 🙂 In that case I think it will a problem. What if you know the person but still the picture is of his dog or a flower?
  • I think it’s an easier thing to be used. So it might be easier for attackers/spammers also. When asked to enter a random text with images I have to re-enter it many times till I am correct but in this case I do not think  I have to make so many efforts.

It is still an improvement on an ordinary CAPTCHA, since ordinary CAPTCHAs only protect against certain threats or attacks. At least Facebook is trying hard to be more secure which is a very good thing to do. 🙂

What are your views against such thing. Do let me know with your comments.

Photo promotion by Facebook is available site wide

Facebook has tested photo promotion feature from quite sometime now. Many of you must have noticed on upper right side of you homepage saying ‘Photo Memories’ or ‘Recommended Photos‘. Recommended Photos feature was present on Facebook since long but now it is seen Site-wide.

Why do I like it?

  • Instead of showing credits or advertisements I found it really good to see some old photo memories of my friends.
  • It does give you a surprise and sort of helps in refreshing old memories with friends. 🙂

What do you think of such a feature? Don’t you think that Facebook should have more such features. Do let me know with your comments. 🙂

Facebook moving ahead with its Search Results

Facebook’s search results have been changed a bit for better relevance. Facebook has released a new feature in which if I want to search about an article I get the results based on the likes and dislikes of my friends. That is the results will affect on how many friends like or share that news.

In a way it is interesting that my search results will include my friend’s likes. Facebook said that the content displayed will be only that is shared by your friends. This is a result of newly added patent which is based on the amount of clicks any user does. Previously this was not available by Facebook’s Open Graph Search. Now Facebook is using its social graph for its relevance.

Suppose I choose a topic as ‘Facebook Patent’ as my new search. The result that I see is based on how many friends have liked or shared that particular news. In the above picture you can see that the first result is shared by 141 people and the other is liked by 3 people.

So what even if you are a Facebook fan like me,will our friend’s likes and dislikes make us decide what is relevant and what is not??? Do share your thoughts and experience on this through your comments.
