Orkut Officially Launched Custom Themes Now

Long time back I wrote about greasemonkey scripts and userstyle themes for changing orkut background. Over the time as orkut changed many of those themes stopped working, but now orkut officially launched few orkut themes and more will be added soon. One such theme I like is shown at the top. More themes can be seen at orkut plus.

I guess Orkut is rolling this feature to few people at a time. So if you don’t see it then just wait. Even I can’t see it. Darnell also reports the same problem. He also asked a nice question as why don’t orkut create a theme directory where users can create and upload their own theme. I think this is a great suggestion and orkut will surely listen to it.

Once enabled, you can switch between different themes by going to Edit Profile option. Themes are available at this Orkut url.

Check Indian Version of Orkut…

Just checked Indian version of Orkut. Its URL is http://www.orkut.co.in/ as expected.

At first look I didn’t notice anything special. Maybe some features have been added internally.

Few things one can expect are…

Increase Your Fan Count On Orkut! [GreaseMonkey script]

More than a year ago, I wrote a script to increase your fans on orkut. It was exploiting a bug, which over the time got fixed. But thanks to a new GreaseMonkey script, you can surely increase your orkut fan count to some extent, this time fully legally! 😉

This script is based on simple logic: you become fan of everyone on orkut and hopefully some of them will be your fan as well!

The script is for firefox users, and can be downloaded from here. If new are new to GreaseMonkey script, you may like to read this small guide.

Increasing Fan…

After installing this script, go to your friends page. The script will make you fan of all users on that page within a second. Just go on clicking next link so that you visit all friends pages and become fan of all.

Automatically…

If you have, say 1000 friends, then you will have to go through 50 friend pages atleast as a single page shows at the max 20 friends. This means you need to click atleast 49 times next link.

Well do you think I will put you through so much pain? 😉

Just copy-paste following javascript into firefox’s navigation bar and hot enter. It will take you through all 50 pages automatically in a single tab. It also takes a small break in between so that you won’t get noticed by Orkut team. Of-course, you have to install above script, before using following codes…

Orkut Added [Anti]Spam Folder in Communities

Orkut finally considered increasing amount of spam and now transferred job of fighting against it to community owner, co-owners and moderators.

In recent development they added a spam folder to communities as shown below…

Now whenever you find a spam topic, click on report spam button on orkut and the topic will be moved to spam folder.

You will see a confirmation like below then…

Now when a community owner, co-owner or any moderator will click on a spam topic, he will see options like below…

Seems a nice move from orkut but they should consider more automated approach.

Orkut Community Search Feature is Broken

Looks like orkut is having really tough time maintaining their codes after quick launch of so many new feature in last few days.

After recent bug in communities page, another related feature, community search is broken. Following is screenshot of a community search I performed…

If you have noticed it, the navigation links are missing, so you can not check all search results. Shown below is screenshot of working navigation links…

Technical Stuff…

Problem is in CommMembers.aspx file which is responsible for navigating and searching community members. Also there seems small error in code, as navigation works with view all members options but it breaks only when you do a search on members list.

Orkut Showing Unjoined Communities in ‘My Communities’ List [New Bug]

As pointed out by Gaurva Dua, I also noticed 2 unknown communities on my communities page.

Orkut communities section on profile page Strangely both communities are not visible into communities section on user profiles. That means such unjoined communities will not be visible to your friends. Thats good as far as privacy concerns, as there are lots of indecent communities on orkut which a decent orkut user will never like to join.

Coming back to the topic, is you noticed in above screenshot, then these extra communities are not joined yet. So you can’t unjoin them directly in order to remove from your communities page.

So first you have to join them and then only unjoin will work.

Technical Details…

The only place where strange communities has been seen is – communities page. This indicates community.aspx clearly have some bugs. Although not a sever one as of now, but who can predict a bug’s feature. So it will be better, if orkut team will correct this ASAP… 🙂

Add Co-Owners to Orkut Communities

A great news for all orkut community owners. A recent feature from orkut will enhance security against community hijacking as well as loosing community when your account gets deleted or compromised.

This new feature let you add 2 co-owners beside 10 moderators.

Co-owners will have following powers…

  • A co-owner can gain ownership of the community in case the owner’s account is compromised or there is a transfer in ownership.
  • If the community is deleted the co-owner can undelete it and become the owner.

Also when a community is transfered or deleted, any previous owner or co-owner within the last 15 days can assume ownership of the community by clicking on the ‘gain ownership’ link visible only to them. The owner or co-owner who had owned the community earlier will have priority for assuming ownership.

Steps To Add Co-owners

#Method 1: When you click on add co-owner link, you will be taken to a page where you can search community memebers by name and choose upyo 2 members to grant them co-owner privilege.

#Method 2: Searching is little tedious and fancy profile names on orkut makes it more complicated. So better click on manage icon as highlighted below beside member names on community pages. It will open options specific to that members, where cilckin on grant co-owner privilege will make them co-owner.

This method is better in case you want to choose co-owners from moderators.

Finally if you really love your community and want to protect it anyhow, you can create a backup account on orkut and make your second profile co-owner.

Orkut Added New Settings – Create Filters For Notification

In a smart move from orkut team, to reduce spam notifications you get in your mailbox, a new setting – Notification Filter is added to orkut’s existing settings.

With this setting you can choose to receive notifications from either:

ADVERTISEMENT
  • everyone
  • friends of friends
  • friends
  • groups of friends

You can also configure filters individually for email notification, orkut message-box notification and orkut pop-up notification.

Although not strong as Gmail filters, these orkut filters can provides fine-grain control over existing orkut settings.

Still one major improvement many orkut users awaiting from long time is list of online friends. It will be great if small pop-up notification window on orkut blinks whenever a friend comes online. As of now such notifications are shown only when somebody scraps you on orkut.

Orkut Users Can Add Comments On Photos

Thanks to a new feature on orkut, now user can add comments on photos. As you can see in above screenshot, I have added a comment on my own photo. You can do this on any photo you have access to.

You can also check all comments on your photos by going to photo comments page. It has a nice format as shown below…

In every row on that page, first photo on which comment received is shown, next to it photo of commentator shown followed by actual comment.

Strangely there is no delete button besides comment. So if you receive any offensive comment you need to go to that photo page to delete it. Also there is no notification sent whenever a comment is posted on your photo. So it is strongly recommended for female users to keep a watch on photo comments page to avoid embarrassment.

This is another facebook like feature orkut team has given after status update feature.

Orkut Allows 10000 Photo Uploads in Albums

After edit-all-photos at once and reorder photos using drag-n-drop features, one thing seriously needed on orkut was ability to upload unlimited photos.

Looks like orkut understood our need and now change the photo upload limit to 10000 photos as shown in above screenshot. Still per album limit is set to 100 photos but as of now there is no official limit on number of albums a user can create.

Well 10000 limit is not bad and I wonder if anyone will hit the limit naturally. Still unlimited photo upload option would have been much better. It will not make much difference technically, as very few users will ever consider to upload more than 10000 photos anyway. But its effect will be different as having no limit always make user feel better than having a very very large limit!

Another thing on album front orkut could improve is true and complete integration between orkut albums and picasa albums. Hope to see that soon in action as managing photos at two different places is really pain.
