Now Easily Search Your Friends On Orkut!
Actually this is not technically a new feature Orkut has introduced, but this recent small change will make an old feature more usable for sure.
As you can see below, there is a new search box on your Orkut Homepage now called search friends in addition to old search orkut…
Now lets do a quick analysis of these two search boxes:

This is good for searching entire orkut. Results are gathered from all orkut profiles, communities and also topics posted in communities.
It support AJAX interface or in simple words, suggest results as you start typing. Suggested results are restricted to friends, so this can be used to search friends as well!
Below are 2 sample searches I made. You can see how easy to find your friend using old box too, if you are searching by their name.

You might be wondering why do you need this as we just used old search-box to search our friends nicely. Well if you are impressed with AJAX-based-suggest feature then its available with this new search box too!

But as I highlighted above, old search orkut box can be used only if you are searching your friends by their name. It doesn’t work if you want to use different search criteria.
Consider this… You are free this weekend and like to go for a new date. So why not search some good options in your city, right in your Orkut friend list! 😉
If you get 189 results like me you can narrow it by using additional keywords! Check now…

Orkut’s Christmas Special Theme!
Just a day before, I concluded a post about Orkut’s treat for this holiday season with words,

and just checked Orkut to see Christmas special theme is there!

I personally don’t find theme option much attractive, but this Christmas theme is really nice. You can see it in action below on my Orkut homepage…
I hope new year theme will be equally nice which is not yet released!

Story 1: Around 3 months back, Orkut improved its email notifications for activities like someone send you a friend request, post a scrap in your scrapbook, etc.
Story 2: At OrkutFeeds, our service which provide updates for Orkut scrapbooks in RSS feeds format, user demanded we should offer an email alert service where they can get complete scrapbook updates. They wanted emails with actual content of scraps!
Now a new update by Orkut connects these two stories. Orkut has improved email notification for scraps, again!
As you can see, above email notification screenshot contains, actual content of scrap as well as display pic of sender.
The only problem with display pic if you are a Gmail user is: you have to enable display of images in every scarp notification email you will get. It would have better if Orkut has used same common email ID to send all notifications.
Anyway this is real treat for users who don’t use Orkut much. Thanks Sreejoy. 🙂

Enjoy Holiday Season on Orkut!
Like everyone else, team Orkut is all set to squeeze maximum juice out of this holiday season! Just logged on orkut to see following message…
Apart from albums and videos, the other feature orkut is promoting with maximum efforts is their newly launched events feature.
Three holiday applications they have listed are BuddyPoke, My Music and Christmas Tree.
Also, we can expect different homepage designs on Xmas and New Year. If you like themes on Orkut, keep an eye on themes tab as special holiday theme will appear anytime!

Just noticed a new and important privacy setting on Orkut: “allow people to find me through my email address”
Using this setting you can restrict others from finding your orkut profile using email address. Just select “Don’t allow people to find me” option in above screenshot and you are done!
This is surely good for most job seekers as many companies/employment agencies nowadays go through candidates’ profiles on social networking sites before making an opinion about them. Its hard to find a person specially in IT industry who is not using atleast one social network.

I remember myself coding a script for one HR agency where the script accepts list of email addresses, find orkut profiles for each of them, gather some information from profiles and uses a customized algorithm to rank candidates! 😉
Guess, now you can save yourself from some disappointment if you have a profile which you do not want to seen by your employer.
Personally, I will recommend not to put any private information on social networking sites, no matter what privacy settings they offer.

Now get full Orkut Scraps as SMS!
But you need not worry anymore. After working hard and contacting with the guys at Google, I found another trick using which you can get full messages of a scrap on your mobile as a SMS (of course it must be less than 150 Characters and not html contents). 🙂
For this, you just need to add “#both” at the end of the feed URL that you use in your SMS Channel.

But its the time for all India Orkut users to rejoice, 🙂 as I have come up with another working trick to get all your Orkut scraps delivered on your mobile using Google SMS channels. Though getting Orkut scraps as SMS is officially available in Orkut, unlike them, this trick is absolutely free. 🙂 Keeping in mind Devilsworkshop terms of not duplicating contents over the internet, I’ve not mentioned the detailed procedure on this blog, rather you can find the step-by-step guide on Rtcamp’s other blog related to mobiles – MobileGyaan.

Orkut Added New Conversation Feature
Following rival Facebook’s path, Orkut added another new feature, conversation, to its continuously upgrading new features list. This is similar to wall-to-wall feature present on Facebook since beginning.
As usual, with Orkut’s most of new features, this will take some time to get enabled on your account. Once it is there you will be able to see a button/link in your scrapbook beside reply link already there.
When you will click on it, a popup will show all scarps exchanged between you and your friend. You can delete any scrap from pop-up. Below is screenshot provided by Deep.
I will update this post once the feature gets enabled on my account. In meantime, if you find something new about it in your account, please let us know.

Orkut’s New & Clean Album Page Design
Just noticed some minor but nice changes on Orkut album pages. Looks like Orkut team really got a creative mind on board as few days back they nicely enhanced birthday reminder section on homepage.
Earlier album listing and individiual photo listing in album had same user interface, with 4 rows and 3 columns. It used to create little confusion about thumbnail you are viewing as it could be photo inside album or album cover itself.
Now albums are given more weight and details as they always deserved and result in next to you… 🙂
I guess Orkut can still make use of free space, next to thumbnail on right-side, to give more details about albums. Like total number of comments, or list of people tagged in current album.
