Facebook Introduces Automatic Photo Syncing from Mobile Phones

Facebook today has announced a new feature on its mobile phone apps for iPhones and Android phones. It is called PhotoSync and like it’s name, it allows users to automatically upload their photos on Facebook from their phones.

If you current have a Android or iPhone, then open the Facebook app. You can see the photos section (image below) from the navigation menu.

The photo sync feature for Facebook is available on Android and iOS apps.

The photos section should show up a sync option. Select it to sync your photos that are on your phone to Facebook.

Facebook sets the privacy of all synced photos to private. That means only the user can view these photos. Later you can select a bunch of photos from among the “Private” album and share it in a post with select friends.

The current storage limit for “synced photos” is 2 GB.

Automatic uploading of photos from Camera to a a website is not exactly a new idea. Google+ has long ago implemented this idea. Dropbox too has a similar service to allow any mobile phone connected with computer to sync photos.

Are you comfortable with the syncing all your photos automatically on Facebook? Do drop in your comments.

Facebook Introduces Instagram-Like Photo Filter on iOS App

Facebook rolled out an updated yesterday to its iOS app. The updated app has a lot of features like sharing multiple photos, gifts and chat buddy list. The new update comes on the heels of Twitter planning to roll out a feature that allows sharing photos with filters.

Though apps allowing users to add filters on photos have been around for a long time, Instagram took it to a new level but becoming a social network.

It was finally purchased by Facebook at a very high price of almost a US $ 1 Billion. The high price tag was possibly because Twitter and Google might have been interested in getting something like Instagram.

What happens to Instagram?

Facebook itself is not really winning on the mobile platform unlike Instagram. So it seems doubtful that Facebook will abandon Instagram but it does seem to be undermining it by copying the same filter features at the moment.

These changes are only for iOS users in the US, but these changes are expected outside the US and on other platforms soon. Facebook has previously released a native app for iOS users and is expected to soon release one for Android phones.

[Updated] Cooliris 3D Photo Wall is Available for iPad

Over two years ago, I was very impressed by the Cooliris photo wall browser extension for Chrome. It shows up your photos from various social media accounts in a layout that mimics a 3D wall.

The Cooliris Photo Gallery gives the impression of browsing in a 3D environment

Cooliris also has worked Gallery for Android app, which now has ended up being the current default photo gallery on Android. Cooliris is now targeting iPad and iPhone users with a shiny new photo viewing and sharing app.

  • The app allows users to look through their photos on Facebook, iPad/iPhone photos and Instagram in their trademark 3D wall layout.
  • The photos can also be shared privately from the app.
  • The app allows unlimited and free photo uploads.
  • The web search for images is powered by Google Image search.

Video Demo of Cooliris on iPad

I loved the Cooliris 3D wall layout on my browser. But moving through it with the help of a mouse or keys is not as intuitive as it is with a tablet device like iPad.

If you are doing a lot of photo browsing and sharing from your iPads then Cooliris looks like a great app.

UPDATE: The 2.2 version of the app released recently also integrates with Google Drive. It also uses a new image recognition feature that works on Google Drive photos. It does not require users to manually tag the photos from Google Drive.

Instagram is now Available for Android Phones!

I have always found that iPhone users tend to take great photos from their phones. The reason was not necessarily a great camera but the fact that they had a awesome app called Instagram.

Instagram allows users to share photos online from their phones. But before publishing Instagram allows users to apply several filters on the phone before sharing it on Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr.

Even though Instapaper is a very popular app on iPhone, it was not available for Android phones. Today, Instagram is available on Google Play (formerly Android Market).

The app is available with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and onwards.

Bonus Tip on Instagram

If you are an avid Instagram user, you might like to take a trip down memory lane. Read this post which reviews a online app that sends you details of photos you shared on Instagram from exactly a year ago.
