Top 5 Social Media Management Tools of 2010

Social Media Management has become an important factor these days, to keep a track of your business in real-time and to attract unique customers to your website/service.  Mashable has nominated the following 5 tools in the ‘Best Social Media Management Tools’ category for the Mashable Awards 2010, which is  to be held next week at CES 2011.

Here are 2010’s Favorite social media management tools. Guys at Mashable carried out a voting process out of which 5 were selected.

1.TweetDeck

Today’s most popular tool for keeping track of tweets, photo tweeting and managing friends and followers. It does not have the ability to add tabs, and its speed with respect to refresh rate, interface etc. is way slower than its closest competitor HootSuite. It does not support scheduling tweets at a certain time, unlike HootSuite.

2.HootSuite

HootSuite supports a lot of features not supported by TweetDeck such as scheduled tweets, additional social networks (MySpace, Pingfm, WordPress, Linkedin) and multiple accounts and users. It shows a better performance than TweetDeck in terms of  display of statistics and speed. As far as the features, usability, support for other social networks is concerned, HootSuite wins hands down against TweetDeck.

3.Who Unfollowed Me

This is a web-based application for twitter which can tell you which people unfollowed you from your twitter account. One has to sign in with his/her twitter account from this website and simply click on check unfollowers to know who unfollowed you recently. You can also check out the people who you followed, but did not follow you back.

4.UberVu

Ubervu deals with community metrics and analytics. When you search for something on Ubervu, it returns complete record of conversations on one single page including comments to the post from all over the Web – WordPress, Twitter, Digg, FriendFeed, Reddit, Facebook, YouTube, Picassa  and many more. UberVU can easily keep track of and interact with the people who search for your business/website, by giving you great tools and analytics oriented around the UberVu community. However, this service is not free and can be used for first 14 days as free trial.

According to WildFireApp, 50% of online users like to enter sweepstakes or contests atleast once a month. This is why, WildFireApp provides the user to create their own interactive promotions such as contests, sweepstakes, coupons, giveaways using their step-by-step promotion builder. This helps the users to promote their businesses via social networks. WildFireApp also provides analytics and metrics to analyse the promotions.

After reviewing the above tools there were some other tools which ought to be on that list.

  2. SWiX
  3. Alexa

Chrome Extension to Share Everything on your Favorite Social network

Google chrome launched its own app store on 7th Dec and immediately, a lot of developers as well as users started using the various apps provided by it. Most of them can be installed for free on your chrome browser, while some of them have to be bought. One of the most handy extensions I found on the store was Cortex, which launched on 7th Dec itself, and has been designed by young entrepreneur Joey Primiani. It’s an easy to use extension which can be used to share almost everything on your favorite social networks from any webpage.

How Does Cortex Work ?

  • Go to the Cortex website.
  • Install the Cortex extension to your browser by clicking on the ‘Download on Chrome’ link.
  • After download is complete, you will be asked to enter details about your Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Instapaper accounts.
  • Once you connect to your social network accounts, you are done setting up cortex!
  • Now you have to simply select a text or your favorite image or even a video on any webpage, and click and hold on that particular object for 1 second.
  • The cortex menu will now appear (a pie- menu).
  • Select the social network of your choice where you want to share your content.
  • Your post gets shared on your social network instantly!

Here is a screenshot of how the Cortex Pie Menu looks like on a web page.

Here’s a demo of Cortex:

Do check it out.Its super easy! Post your reviews and comments 🙂

Creative internet memes on Facebook spread like wildfire!

All social networks contain a lot of strange events happening. Information spreads rapidly across continents and similarly harmless meme’s also spread fast. Facebook has a new online meme or rather a new game that a lot of people are playing. The game is quite simple. It was first posted on Fbknol our blog on all things Facebook.

Rules of the Number Game:

  • Ideally lets say someone sends you a number in the form of chat or a Facebook message. This number can be used by the you to say something about that person.
  • Most times that number is added to the status message left on the Facebook Profile.
  • This actually is like sending secret messages to friend without actually hiding them.

Personally I am not a fan of such games or internet memes, but off late there have been a few Meme’s that are happening on Facebook. Like the latest one about changing your Facebook profile page into a cartoon character.

Maybe someone should analyze and do some research on how such things spread on Facebook and other social mediums to simulate how even real news ends up spreading like wildfire on the internet.

What do you think about these things? Do you think such things are harmless fun or actually can show how things spread in the virtual world almost at the speed of thought.

Jumo: Facebook co-founder’s new social network

The spotlight has always been on Mark Zuckerberg when it comes to Facebook. Little is known about the co-founder and Zuckerberg’s then roomate –Chris Hughes. This time with the recently launched Jumo Beta – its his claim to fame.

Jumo is a social networking site which promotes various social causes. Rings a bell? Yes, Jumo is being popularly referred to as the social networking version of the popular Facebook Application, Causes. Jumo seeks to bring the users closer to the social issue they are passionate about.

How does Jumo work?

  • Since it is a social networking site, you need to create an account. You can only sign up for Jumo if you already have a Facebook account.

  • While you’re signing up, you can choose which category of issues you are interested in – like Education, Health, Poverty, etc.

  • Next, depending on the categories you select – you will get several organisations which you may follow with a single click.

Jumo: Pros and Cons :

  • The majority of Facebook users are in the 13-24 years age group. The target audience is far too young to donate sufficient funds for social causes.
  • The number of social networking sites will saturate users.
  • Jumo’s financial plan seems highly unstable. It started with about $750,000 as a grant from Omidyar Network. Mostly it would make its share as a cut from the donations made to the institutions it hosts. Whether or not this financial structure would change in the long run, we’ll have to see.
  • What works for Jumo is the intention of this network. The intention of involving the youth with issues using the medium of social networking might spur a strong positive emotion.
  • It also helps to build a ‘community’ of like-minded individuals. One can ‘talk’ by writing an influential piece on an issue of interest. Protests, donations, volunteering – all have a higher probability of involvement with the youth using Jumo.

Overall, it is surely refreshing to see a social network which is truly ‘social’ in nature. May be with Jumo we can all turn a new leaf in our virtual lives. Have you registered with Jumo? Share your views with me through your comments.

Google offered to buy Twitter for $2.5-$4 Billion

According to Yahoo Finance, Google made an offer to Twitter for about $2.5 billion. Twitter I guess did not like it much and decided against it. Well this makes sense as Google can manage to make money out of Twitter and its search facility. Bing which is a Microsoft product has tied up with Facebook to create something called ‘Social Search‘.

Apart from the initial hype over it, I have not met anyone who has really found Social Search all that useful.

    Microsoft too is interested!

There are also reports the Twitter was made an another offer for about $4 billion. That might mean, Microsoft might be offering them. Twitter against decided against it. I guess Microsoft wants to make sure Google does not own Twitter and vice-versa.

Well if I do let my imagination run riot and think that Google made it’s decision to buy Twitter based on our post, Twitter should thank us for starting off a bidding frenzy for them. 😉

Jokes apart I do feel that at some point of time Twitter will be acquired unless its current owners manage to monetize and bring in a profit with Twitter. What are your views? Will Google manage to acquire Twitter?

Book your invitation for RockMelt Browser!

RockMelt browser promises to be the next exciting new browser with a clear view of being useful from a social media perspective. It is based on Chromium. It promises to revolutionize social media usage by bringing in some intrinsic built-in features to the browser itself. As it is based on Chromium it supports almost all extensions which work with your Chrome browser.

    Some expected features of RockMelt

    • The browser is basically specific for Social Media usage. Facebook friends with their display images can be seen on the browser itself.
    • Along with this you can see multiple features to use Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.
    • This seems to try to mash together the concepts of social media apps like Tweet Deck with a browser like Chrome.

I do not have an invitation to sign-up and use the browser so I will post a full-fledged review of it in sometime in the future. 😉

    Sign up for RockMelt

Meanwhile you can sign-up for RockMelt with your Facebook account. It will send you an invitation soon so you can use RockMelt browser. This has actually helped create a lot of buzz about RockMelt because invites are available to people who get invited to RockMelt. I guess a viral campaign is a nice way to build up publicity for a browser.

There are many browsers out there but RockMelt seems to be focusing more on social media as its calling card. Will this work for it? Do drop in your comments and views.

Use Social Translate To Translate Tweets

Social Networking sites has made this world a small place to live in. Sitting here in India you can find out what a person in France is doing, just by following him on Twitter or Facebook. Social Networking sites has undoubtedly removed international boundaries.

But there are times when language becomes a barrier. What if a person you follow, tweets in a language that you don’t know? If you are thinking about Google Translate which pops up every time you open a site in a foreign language, well that does not work with sites like Twitter or Facebook. See the example below:

tweet in foreign languageOne way is to copy the message and go to Google.com/translate. Easier way is to install Social Translate– an extension for Google Chrome.

    Installing Social Translate

Social Translate is an extension for Google’s Chrome that translates updates on social networking sites into your native language on the fly using Google Translate. At present it supports Twitter, Facebook, Orkut, Flickr and Amplify. From my experience it works best for Twitter at present.

Install social translate from the extension gallery.

Once you install it, go to Extensions (or in Chrome address bar type chrome://extensions/) and click “Options” for Social Translate.

Social Translate Options Here you can set your preferences regarding Translation Quality, and setting up Primary and Secondary Language.

    Social Translate in Action

Once you have Social Translate installed, you’ll see the Social Translate icon in the address bar for the pages where the extension can work. It translates the status message automatically. You’ll see the icon next to the tweet that has been translated, and if you click on it, it’ll show the original message below the translated tweet.

    social translate in action

social translate in action with original tweet This is a must-have extension for those who spend time on social networks as it automatically translates messages to your native language. However, the translation reliability is not very good for small messages (which is clear in the above message). But that is because of limited ability of Google Translate which this extension uses.

Do you know of any other extension that can be used for translating messages on Social Networking site? Do share it with us.

Look up common follower features on Twitter

When it comes to Facebook and its talked about social graph the key to increasing its relevancy is not with the number of people using it but with the number of internal connections within the network. This was mainly done with the use of looking up common friends.

This was a challenge for Twitter and it was a important feature for users to know who they might need to follow. So now Twitter has introduced a couple of changes.

As you can see in the image above that some accounts show up as ones which I might be interested in following. It also shows other Twitter users who I follow are following this suggested account. 😉

This will be mainly helpful to people who are new to Twitter. Lookup these suggestions by clicking here.

    Look up common accounts followed

    • I follow @rahul286 and when I click on his twitter page, I can now see common accounts the both of us follow. (see above image)
    • These changes will help new and old users to actually visit the Twitter website and not just use Twitter through apps.
    • This will be something even expert Twitter users will find useful in finding new and interesting followers. I do not like following people randomly and especially avoid some accounts which are nothing but spam.

If you liked reading this post you might enjoy reading 5 good things on Twitter if Retweet had never existed. 🙂

Do you think these changes are too late in the day with Twitter? Do let me know through you comments.

    10 Interesting facts about Twitter

Twitter is something I was not fond of but started using slowly and regularly when I started to blog. This is when I realized the many applications for using Twitter. Last month we had a post by Vishwanath Dalvi who wrote about 21 interesting facts about Google. I thought I would do a little research thanks to Wikipedia articles and other sources I managed to put together 10 interesting facts about Twitter. 🙂

    • Twitter was created mainly to stay connected with a group of friends through SMS channels. It was never meant to be used on the internet much and that was the reason for its 140 character limit.
    • Twitter was mostly funded through venture capitalists who funded most of the $ 50 million, Twitter is still operating on.
    • Twitter was founded in 2006 and for the first 3 years as a company Twitter made a total of ‘zero’ dollars in revenues.
    • Twitter is expected to make 1.54 billion dollars by the end of 2013 with over a billion users.
    • Twitter has over over 65 millions tweets everyday and that averages to 750 tweets per second.
    • There are over 70,000 registered applications for Twitter created mostly by people who have no connection to Twitter.
    • The first tweet on Twitter was by Jack Dorsey and the tweet was “Just setting up my twttr” on 21st March 2006.

    • There are over 75 million Twitter accounts of which only 2546 accounts are verified.
    • Tweets like “i am having lunch’ became known as pointless babbles. A research showed that about 40% of the tweets are in this category.
    • Twitter handles 24 billion search queries a month. Yahoo handles 9.4 billion search queries and Bing handles about 4.1 search queries. This means Twitter is the ranked #2 search engine behind Google which handles about 88 billion search queries. 🙂

Hope you found these facts about Twitter as interesting to read as I enjoyed searching and compiling them. If you think I have missed anything interesting or have views on Twitter do drop in your comments. 😉
