WordPress Powers 18.9% of the Web

Over a year ago, there was a survey done that showed that 48 of the top 100 blogs in the world were running on WordPress. That showed how the big blogs preferred WordPress as a platform it did not explain how much of the web used the platform. A couple of days ago, Matt Mullenweg (Founder of Automattic) gave a speech at WordCamp San Francisco 2013. He shared an interesting bit of statistic, which was that now 18.9% of web was running on WordPress.

Some WordPress Stats over the past 10 years.

Here are some of the interesting stats about the last year.

  • Over 46 million downloads of WordPress happened.
  • 336 themes were added to the library in a single year.
  • There were 6,758 plugins were approved which takes the total over 26,000 plugins in all available on WordPress.
  • And finally, about 18.9% of the web runs on WordPress.

Future WordPress Updates

There was also an outline of future updates planned for WordPress. This included WordPress 3.7 version that is scheduled for early October. WordPress 3.7 will apparently be a version where major cleanup of the platform will be done. WordPress 3.8 is scheduled to be released in December this year. You can keep a track of WordPress version road-map here.

Google announces 750 M Android activations and a new Android Boss

Google’s CEO Larry Page, announced in a blog post that Andy Rubin was moving away from heading the Android team in Google. He will be replaced by Sundar Pichai. This is a big change at Google but Andy Rubin is not quitting he is moving to other Google projects.

Sundar Pichai seems a natural choice as he heads the Chrome team. He has been very successful with the rise of Chrome browser and also tending to a very good developer ecosystem that keeps Chrome’s web store healthy with apps and extensions.

Now he takes over running of the Android project for Google.

There were also additional announcements of some major landmarks reached by Android.

  • Android has now been activated on over 750 million devices.
  • 25 billion apps have been now downloaded on Google Play.
  • They also announced 60 manufacturers have a partnership with Android.
Andy Rubin moves out of Android

Andy Rubin’s Future

Andy Rubin is a legendary name in the mobile industry. He was the co-founder of Android Inc, the company that started the open-source OS. Google finally ended up buying Android but let Andy Rubin head the project. Andy Rubin has not just led Android from iPhone’s shadow but also made it into the arguably the best mobile OS with a big app ecosystem.

Andy Rubin is moving to other Google projects. Is it Google Glass? We will not know for a while atleast.

Future of Android!

With someone who headed the Chrome team now also in charge of Android, it is quite possible to expect a lot more integration of the two platforms.

Both have a healthy developer ecosystem but they are for the most part running parallel except for Chrome recently being available on Android and other mobile OS. Hopefully their paths will cross a lot more now.

Instagram Daily Active Users Nosedive by 24%

Instagram has seen a massive drop in daily active users. It had topped up at 16.4 million daily active users around two weeks ago but that number is down to 12.4 million daily users. According to AppData and Instagram has lost over 3.5 million users over the past 7 days as far as daily active users are concerned.

Instagram has seen amazing success in the past year or so. Its big moment was when Facebook shelled out a cool billion dollars to acquire it. Instagram was soon working closely with Facebook. Instagram on 17th December,  updated its privacy policy. It basically gave itself the permission to use user photos for commercial usage.

That started a blacklash from users and it was not surprising that daily active users actually dropped by 24%. Instagram rolled back the new privacy policy update to stop the criticism but it has probably lost the ‘trust’ factor.

Why Instagram looks in trouble?

Instgram is not really a photo app as much as it is a social app. That means during Christmas week and holiday season over the past week, it should have seen record user activity. It ideally should have seen record user activity and not a drastic loss of active users.

Instagram has also actually become less social but turning off Twitter cards which allowed Twitter feeds to display photos in the stream itself without requiring people to visit the Instagram website. Twitter hit back with its own filters for photos. Facebook itself has sort of canibalized Instagram features in their own photo app for iOS. I won’t be surprised in thinking that the best days of Instagram are behind it.

Has Apple reached its Peak or hit a Plateau? [Infographic]

Apple is the world most valued company. It is also one of the most profitable companies in the world. The profits really are raked in by the billions by the uber-successful iPhone.

There are also other trends likes less iPhone users want to buy another iPhone compared to previous years. Also Apple has missed the expected sales for iPhone 5. It was expected to sell over 6 million phones but ended up selling only 5 million.

After Apple stocks fell by record numbers over the last week, I thought taking a look at this infographic by Online Business Degree.

Even if Apple has reached its peak, it still has a massive momentum. And this momentum will continue for atleast a couple of years. In the meanwhile, Apple could possibly open up new markets for itself in China. It might introduce a new device like a television set or even a wearable computer, which could keep Apple right at the top all over again.

Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.

This will be some good news for Facebook which has been asked a lot of questions on how it will make money as more and more people switch to mobile platforms.

Many of these requests are actually made by government agencies for various reasons which include copyright, impersonation, national security, hate speech and more.

Also only 5 of these requests were backed up by a court order while the rest were from different administrative agencies.

Internet Censorship and Content Removal Requests!

Usual assumption is that when a government increases the number of content removal requests from Google, it is trying to clamp down on the internet. Internet censorship has recently grabbed many headlines in India with ministers demanding manual scanning of all content on social media, to courts threathening to ban social media websites.

Just over a week ago, many Indian cities had protests against online censorship, egged on by the popular hacktivist group Anonymous.

Interestingly, India is not the only country to see a spurt in government requested content removal requests. United States also increased the number of requests from 92 to 187.

Check out the link below which is a compilation of data collected by Google about all the requests they receive about content removal.

[Stats] WordPress Platform Used by 48% of the top 100 Blogs!

This blog runs on self-hosted WordPress platform, hence I have always been interesting in keeping tabs on the popularity of WordPress. Blogging as an activity is also at a all-time high and WordPress seems to dominate the top 100 blogs. According to Pingdom, out of the top 100 blogs in the world, 48 have adopted WordPress.

Interestingly 39% of these top blogs are using self-hosted WordPress while 9% are using WordPress hosted service. That means more blogs use WordPress hosted than any other popular platform.

Movable Type which was quite popular once as a blogging platform is losing steam fast. This might because the top 100 blogs might have changed and chances are newer blogs are more prone to use WordPress.

Tumblr over the past year has really grown a lot. I wrote about how it has a lot more pageviews than WordPress.com or Blogspot.com blogs. While WordPress.com actually dominates with more visitors than other blogging platforms, clearly showing it seems to be better from a search engine optimization perspective.

This blog too started on Blogger and later migrated to self-hosted WordPress. If you are blogging which platform are you using? Do drop in your comments.
