Use twitter from any chat messenger

I have always found services which help me use Twitter through messenger quite fascinating. As a blogger I have tried many Twitter based desktop applications. But the one I most use to check tweets after a few hours is through MSN. You might have read up on how to use MSN messenger for looking up tweets before on DW.

Tweet Switch is a useful tool which not only allows me to monitor my Twitter account with MSN, but also supports Gtalk, Yahoo Messenger, AIM and ICQ.

Okay why I liked Tweet Switch is because it gives me the option of receiving Tweets on various Messengers with options on switching the selected messengers based on which one I am signed into.

For example I log in with Gtalk, but I log out then the tweets are then sent to another messenger I have specified for example Live Messenger. If I am not signed into Live Messenger, I can have a 3rd Messenger configured to retrieve and send tweets.

How does it do it?

  • Major plus point of Tweet Switch is that I did not need to sign up or register. Only needed to enter my Twitter account details. After that I just needed to enter my chat id for various messengers.
  • A  bot called ‘tweetswitch‘ will be added to your friends list. Just start using the commands for retrieving and sending your tweets through the chat window.

Use Email to control Twitter and Facebook

Sharing and cross-sharing of information across platforms is the new trend and very useful if you want to cover various forums to disseminate information. For a blogger it is vital to distribute links to their posts across various platforms. Here is where I found Flexamail quite handy. It is a service which allows you to send and retrive information to Twitter and Facebook without even the need to visit any webpage. All you need is to log into your email account.

  • First I needed to register with Flexamail with my Email Id.
  • The I had to configure with my username and password for Facebook and Twitter.
  • Finally I was set to start using Twitter and Facebook with my Email account.

How does it work?

  • When I sent a email to particular email address of Flexamail I could send a tweet and update my Facebook wall.
  • What I type in the subject line is sent over as a tweet while what is in the body of the email message is posted on your Facebook Wall.
  • It also has other options to check 10 recent wall updates, 20 tweets from friends and also helpful in sharing images. 🙂

Send tweets in 81 langauges with TwitLan

TwitLan is a really cool website which allows you to use Twitter to send message in different languages. TwitLan supports different languages and their scripts. It also has support for 81 languages and their blog claims the number will only increase. 🙂

  • TwitLan allows you to write in different language scripts. It is not a translation tool. It allowed me to write in 81 languages.
  • Once you sign-in to the website the layout is very simple. On the website to the right hand side you will see the list of 81 languages.
  • Just click on one of the language and virtual keyboard which is language specific shows up in the center.
  • Use the virtual keyboard to write your tweets in the language you want.

  • In case you cannot view the virtual keyboard make sure the browser has JavaScript enabled.

A lot of non-English users might feel at home using Twitter with TwitLan. What I found very fascinating was simply the huge number of languages it supported.

Twitter widget for Opera browser

The Opera browser is one of my favorite ones. I started using it many years ago and even though now I end up using Chrome and Firefox a lot more, I still do use Opera quite a bit. So it was nice to know about a Twitter widget which is available with Opera.

  • If you want to install the widget you just need to visit the widgets page for Opera.
  • Once on it you can download or install the Twitter widget. Do make sure JScript is enabled on Opera.
  • Sign into Twitter from the widget and you are good to go.
  • A great feature of the Twitter Widget was that even when I closed my Opera browser the widget still worked like a stand alone  application. This works only if you are using the Opera 10.2 version.

Is it any good?

I found it not all that different from most of the desktop clients available for using Twitter. The widget seemed to be ideal for people who use Twitter moderately and end up sending a few tweets every day. It surely is not a worthy replacement of many popular Twitter applications like TweetDeck as it does not still support Twitter Lists. That is the main drawback of this widget as because it does not support Lists, following incoming tweets gets a little difficult.

This widget is still in testing and hence might have some bugs. But I did not have any issues for a couple of hours I used the widget. Download the Opera browser from their website and the widget from here.

Send tweets from MSN messenger

I do not use MSN Messenger on a regular basis but I did have a very active Hotmail account before Gmail was avaialble. Some friends even today refuse to use anything but MSN Live messenger and hence I still stay online to chat with them with Live Messenger. A few days ago I came across a great web service called TwitonMSN which allowed me to use Twitter from my MSN Messenger. 😉

Use Twitter from MSN

  • You can visit the website TwitonMSN which will prompt you to add a contact name to your MSN Messenger. The contact is an automated bot which when you log in to your MSN messenger will allow you to connect to Twitter.
  • Just type into MSN Messenger’s chat window whatever you want to. A simple message as in the one shown in the image above is posted as a tweet.
  • The bot also keeps sending you every single tweet on to your messenger chat window.
  • It supports following an username, replying to a tweet and also Retweet. If you drag and drop a picture file into the chat the image is then posted along with a tweet. 😉
  • Even sending a direct message is possible by typing it in the following format “d username content” .
  • For a comprehensive command list type in “commands” and for help type in “help”. 🙂

I found this quite handy, even though I do not spend a lot of time on Live messenger. But for our readers who are using Live Messenger this feature will surely be very useful.

Twitter changes the question

“What are you doing?” is the hallmark question with which, Twitter entered the internet and created a revolution in the way, people communicate. However, today, Twitter has changed the basic question from What are you doing? to “What’s Happening?”

The reason that seconds the decision of twitter to do so, is largely said to be the change in social stuffs. The previous question was limited to you and your personal life. And according to the twitter blog, “What are you doing” is no more, the relevant social question. When you’re sipping a coffee, and someone asks “What are you doing?”, the answer comes, I’m sipping coffee. While, there are zillions of activities going around you about which you can tweet.

Ok. Fine. But will it make a difference to me?

In a way, it will. Before the new idea, all the tweeting was about personal statuses. But now, it will be more dynamic. Now the idea is not only to tweet about you but also about your surrounding and the events happening around you.

The future?

Presently, there are limits on content what you can pour over twitter. And most importantly, the 140 character limit. Maybe, in near future, Twitter may lift that limit. That will open the gates for new ideas to bloom. We can only wait and watch!

So, that was the idea behind changing the basic question from “What are you doing?” to “What’s Happening?”
