Official Google App Engine for WordPress Plugin Released

Google App Engine, the cloud computing service platform has recently started support for PHP. WordPress is probably the most popular PHP based software used, so it is no surprise that an official WordPress plugin for Google App Engine was released. The plugin is mainly useful for functionality like sending email using the Mail App API and also uploading and serving media from Google Cloud Service.

This plugin is not meant for general WordPress users as they will need to know how to deploy PHP applications on Google App Engine. The plugin will over-ride some core WordPress functionality, mainly the email and media upload functionality.

The plugin’s code has also been uploaded to GitHub.

Coming Up – Meet The WordPress Makers

Many Developers might be interested to know, who is involved in taking WordPress decision and how the open source project is structured in general. Lets see what Jane Wells has to say about it.

By Jane Wells WordPress is a meritocracy, it means that anyone can get involved, and a combination of the quality of someone’s contributions and their level of interest and time commitment will determine how much influence they have over decisions.

They have several levels of contributes for the WordPress application development, that includes full-time developers and casual contributors.

The WordPress team is planning to come up with second annual WordPress core leadership meetup in January 2011, they will have a video town hall at some point during their time together. During these days he will be posting profiles of the core developers who will be at the meetup. After that he will be branching out and posting about other contributors, including developers, designers, forum moderators, etc.

If you have any questions you can submit it to them to answer then in the forum thread What Should 2011 Hold for WordPress? To have a little idea how all these people fit together and how decisions are made, you can check out the presentation held WordCamp Portland in October on How WordPress Decisions Get Made.

If you are a developer or a WordPress geek, the you might be interested in downloading WordPress 3.1 beta 1 version. This version is expected to have bugs and is being made available only for testing purposes. Hence, do not upgrade to 3.1 beta 1 on a live site. Try it out on a test server.

  • Some of the changes to watch out with WordPress 3.1 Beta 1 will be to Post Formats, Theme Search, Admin Bar and much more. See complete list here.
  • As I mentioned in this post earlier, this is meant only for testing and not to be used with a live website. Once bugs are found and fixed the version will update overnight.
  • If you have found a bug or any issue with the new feature you can bring it up at their alpha/beta forum.
  • WordPress 3.1 Beta 1 does not work with BuddyPress as yet. It should be fixed in time.

The final version of WordPress 3.1 should be out in a couple of months. It is slated to release by the end of this year or early next year.
